Please have a second look at the GK clock, because Sony often underclock the card.

I just reread the article and it looks like it was changed. I guess the information from Sony on the SA was a bit premature. I guess we'll have to wait a bit more.
I agree nick, Sony's bios is often detuned. We'll have to see what come of this. Sure am glad I have my 3820TG. I get to just watch CES this year without having to spend a lot of $$.

Do any of you guys have the clockgen for the I3-370m and tell me proper setting to get over 3ghz?
Could you please refer me to the best place to buy a CPU upgrade for my 3820tg.
Thanks -
Looks pretty cool, very vaio-z-like but the end mentions the absence of a discrete graphics card
Coolest indeed, though, I'm sure this thing will probably cost as much as the sony notebook that Bronsky mentioned
-
The article was edited. The first draft talked about a model with the 6630 GPU. Looked like the Z's replacement. Maybe Sony wasn't ready to release that info. yet.

I remember and read what you're referring to. I ignored it as the king because it's sony and although great quality with specs like that your looking at very expensive...
-
PC Magazine has an article about it still up.
-
sorry mate, how can you get 780mhz on gpu ? volt mod ? impressive
-
So has anyone with a 3/4/5820TG gotten the GPU-switch button to work yet? Right now it seems like a useless button (shame it even has a light indicator too).
-
I was just wondering if someone could write a detailed step-by-step on how to update the BIOS on the 3820TG. I'm kind of a noob when it comes to computers and looking through this thread, I have seen many people asking this same question in regards to flashing the BIOS. I see to do it in a pure DOS environment but not sure how to get there or what to do when I do get there. This would help me and many others out I'm sure.
-
I usually just dl the BIOS package from acer website and run the windows bios updater...make sure to close everything first and that PC is plugged in. Sure there's astronomical risks of power outage etc but still, I have a backup computer that I can use to recover any failed bios update. Besides this saves all the hassle with DOS bios updating...you just double-click the .exe, wait about 30 seconds for it to erase old bios and copy new bios, and voila it reboots and it's as if nothing happened.
-
hmm, I just oc:ed it
Changed the thermalpaste last day to artic silver 5, now I can have 795/1100 and scored 1160P in 3dmark06
Thnx mate!
-
It is simple one of the good models.
-
maybe... I was lucky on the gpu but not on the cpu clock
-
probably lower temps allow you to get higher clocks without artifacts..great
-
Just tried overclocking for the first time. Unfortunately while Carfreak got lucky I did not.
Running the "stable clocks" Hendrickson posted in the OP of 650/950, I get artifacts. Oh well, I guess I'll just stay at stock as this laptop does everything I need to do even at stock everything.
-
what´s the highest confirmed oc on this card? Maybe I have the top score?
i will try to get even higher with some better cooling.. I will take fresh +5C air to the laptop and try get past 780/1115.. 790/1120 can´t be that hard to reach.. -
The memory is the problem. If you drive the clock to high you will damage the memory ICs faster and they will die, because the are not cooled.
-
okey, but +69C @ 780/1110 can´t be dangerous for the ICs ?? Or does the temp probe only meature the core?
Here´s some of my other oc´s with my regular computer:
neoNmaZteR's 50173 marks 3DMark2001 SE run with 3x Radeon HD 4890 @ 1000/1100MHz -
The memories of the HD 5650m for some models are not very stable with years , it's for some laptop qimonda , and they will have more and more difficultes to keep the same clock 6 months , 1 years after...
The temp you can have on the log is just for the core , it's often impossible to have the temp of the memorie of a graphic card , you have to put a sensor on one of the memorie of the card ...
But If the manufacturer of the memorie is samsung , no problems , you can rush of the frequency easily -
Okey! I have the samsung memory ICs...

Hi folks,
Have a look to this:
CES 2011: AMD launches the Radeon HD 6000Ms - BeHardware
It seems that you have some interest in flashing your HD5650 into HD6550. -
If that´s possible it would be fun to try!
-
Just flash the last Bios and change to dedicated mode and the GK changes to a 6550. -
do u have a link to the right bios??
-
the latest on acer wesite
-
I see what you mean. Under normal conditions I would have done the exact thing as you, but I'm without car etc. Also, the price tag is much better online.
-
allready have that one.. no change in gpu name
-
Bios dedicate mode
-
does flashing the latest bios just change the name or do the properties follow through as well? The 6550 has a stock clock of 600mhz and VDDC of 1.05v compared to 550mhz and 1.00v for a 5650. It'll be an interesting prospect if we see volts increase with the latest bios....
-
i rather leave it at 1.00v and clock it to 650( that is what i do when i play the game deadrising 2)
i don't want to push this perfect notebook too much,.
afraid there is no replacement in the next 6 months if it die on me!! -
try to install latest drivers for 6550, in 3820tg dirivers list
-
My son's 4820TG has these (1066MHz parts) in it: gzkill 1066 2x4G
I just ordered these: OCZ 1366 2x4G. Should be in today or monday, I'll let you know how they work. -
pure GPU only.. yea i thinkkk you got the highest core+memory combination...
my core can hit 765... memory 1024.... only...~ lol... artifacting/hangup even if the temp doesn't cross 80C -
I think you have you clocks pushed the fastest but I think Hendrickson and OC Freak still had higher performance from their GPUs, all things considered. Keep in mind that you have a more recent bios so you would expect more stability from the GPU when OC'd.
-
My HD6550M reach 850/1150 rock stable under Furmark, however, DIRT2 crash when GPU is higher than 750.
Has anybody of you an explanation? Is DIRT2 known to be capricious with OCed cards? -
Hey,
Just wondering, are the new sandy bridge cpus compatible with the 3820TG or are they on a new socket? Think the desktops are different not sure about the mobile ones. Also Im looking at crucials memory offerings on 8GB RAM and wondering is 1333mhz with CL=9 better than 1066mhz with CL=7? The 1066mhz should be better right? For standard use as the cpu uses 1066mhz? But which would be better for overclocking?
Thanks -
1. I doubt that the new sandy bridge cpus will be compatible with the older Core i socket (LGA-1156 vs. LGA-1155 for desktop, not sure about the laptop version), but who knows until someone confirms this.
2. 1333mhz CL=9 ram will probably lower itself to 1066mhz with tighter timings if 1066mhz is the max supported on the computer. -
my corsair 1333 CL=9 memory is running at 1066 CL=7
( not planning to overclock my core i7) -
I had ordered 8 GB of GSkill 1333 which was defective and had to be returned. It would not get past 4% of Memtest. Luckily, it was from Newegg. RMA'd and just got the credit. I'll be looking for a good deal on 8GB again soon.
-
Anyone else having problems with the 3820tg in that sometimes I would keep hearing the windows sound (the sound when you plug in an external usb or adapter)? I keep hearing this sound randomly, but more especially when im running on the battery.
Any advice? -
Hmm recently i started getting BSOD's.... anyone else?
-
Synthetic benchmarks like Furmark and 3Dmark06/11 are NOTHING like real games like DiRT2, the former are programs which impose static and limited variety of stress onto the GPU, while the latter pushes infinitely varied and also fluctuating degrees of stress onto the GPU, with good reason. Stress-testing GPU is not like for CPU or RAM in this regard; a.k.a. test new OC with stressful games rather than benchmarks.
-
I get BSOD-s once a week, and my 3820 does some crazy stuff, but since i play the new NFS game, my cpu is going up to 100C and i'm not happy with that
-
Sorry guys, the talk of the 5650 turning into the 6550 started around post 730, and the search function won't let me search numerical terms, so...
I don't understand. I did upgrade to the latest BIOS, and my card is indeed now listed as a 6550M. But is it a real 6550M or is it just a mistake in the BIOS?
I did a Windows Experience Index and the graphics result is still the same.
Thanks!!! -
^Does the detected clock speed run higher?
-
Here's the rundown on the difference between 5650 and 6550: 6550 is 0.1V higher, and 50 MHz higher core clock (the latter stock upclock being an acceptable boost because of the former voltage boost).
Your 5650 is still a 5650, but people are speculating that with this update, the GPU voltage might be unlocked to 6550's 1.1V (rather than locked at 1.0V of the 5650); if this is true then higher overclocking is possible.
However I've seen no proof that this "voltage unlocking" has happened to anyone's 5650. -
Has anybody been able to use the 8.741.1.6 drivers and IE9/Firefox 4 beta with hardware acceleration successfully?
I notice that upgrading to these drivers causes those browsers to crash when hardware acceleration is enabled. Someone with an ENVY 14 has the same issue, and it seems their driver availability is the same as for the 3820TG. -
Wow, I underestimated how fast this thread grows
Thanks for your help, I was successfully able to update to BIOS 1.19. Really isn't as scary as the internet makes it out to be.
