I'll check this out. I think 5s would be ideal, but i'll see how the 2s worth - gotta me quick with the unplug lol.

PS i'm still trying to figure this LManager out, I can't seem to open it for the life of me. I've uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail - I can't even open the program (is it openable?). -_- My volume up Fn won't unmute my sound, I have to unmuteFn and VolumeupFn. pretty annoying lol.

Steps to follow before you install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 from the Microsoft Download Center

Step 2, in the "More Information" section.

"Important: If you are using an Intel integrated graphics device, you should be aware that there are known issues with certain versions of the Intel integrated graphics device driver and with D2D enabled applications, such as certain versions of Windows Live Mail. The versions of the Intel integrated graphics device driver that are known to be problematic are Igdkmd32.sys and Igdkmd64.sys versions 8.15.10.2104 through 8.15.10.2141. For more information about a known issue with these drivers and with Windows Live Mail, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 2505524 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2505524)."

    Thank you for the information.

I have one of the buggy windows version but I don't use any of the Winodws Live application, which should create a problem.

I'm experiencing this problem, as I both have a buggy version and uses Live Mail 2011.
What should I do? The fix supplied by Microsoft can't fix the problem with the driver

Contact Acer and send them a link to the bug report and ask for a new driver version. ;)

The fix from MS seems to deactivate the hardware acceleration for the Windows Live Parts.

My 3820TG recently started to run very hot. While playing games, I usually reach 105C CPU and 100C GPU temperature within around 15 minutes. The system is not overclocked in any way. Until about a month ago, I never had this problem. I think it started after I flashed the BIOS to 1.19, but I don't know if it has anything to do with that. Any ideas about what I should do?

Lmanager doesn't open. If you have BT, hit FN - F3 and you will see the selection pop up. That means it's running.

I am thinking of getting one but not sure if i should wait for the sandy bridge to come out or get one now. Which of the two would be better 460m with 5650 or 480m with 6550 any benefits going with the 6550? There like a $200 difference between the two.

I don't know about anyone else but the performance is probably a 5% boost and the price is 25% more. I don't think it's worth it, if that is the only difference.

Yeah, that works fine, everything pops up as it should. But i was curious if there would be a subsetting or something within LM, but i guess it doesn't have an interface.

Any idea why after my clean install using Fn+up doesn't unmute, but just "increase" the volume. I then have to Fn+F8 to get sound to work (mute/unmute). No big deal, just annoying lol.

maybe you get high overclock with 460m because of lower FSB and the 6550 is just a renamed 5650

    The function is alright.

If you mute a device, you will not change the volume.

    Well, yeah?

I'm talking about the opposite: if you change the volume it should unmute the speakers (try it). But when I use the function keys (only after a clean install, before I did it worked this way) it only changes the volume level and doesn't unmute.

That is not the function of the volume regulation.

No idea, but if you use the volume control it will unmute by simply adjusting the volume.

Before I did a clean install the Fn+up/dn unmuted my speakers as well. Meh, I guess it isn't a big deal then.

460m overclocks to 3.1ghz easy and then whatever turbo adds to that so about 3.3-3.4 on single core. Its a good processor, I've never had trouble with it running virtual OS's and Android emulators its nice and quick. The 5650m is a great card and you can clock to the same levels as the 6550m easy. At the same time its always nice to have the shiniest penny! Are you not going to wait to see what the 3830 brings? Sandybridge is supposed to be a nice jump, though you wont be using the extra power of the internal graphics card. USB3 would be handy though....the Sony S series looks very nice too though Im sure it would be a good bit more expensive

Good news on the cpu front. I was going to wait for sandy bridge but the risk is they might navigate away from what made the 3820tg so special. Usb 3 sure is not going to make up for the lost of a 5650. Is it confirm that the 3830 will come with a discrete graphics just as powerful as the 5650? If so i will definitely wait for it..

There are rumours of it being an nVidia 540m which is more powerful that the 6550 according to notebookcheck but I think can have problems if you are running linux....you can see comparisons here NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M - Notebookcheck.net Tech What may be a BIG problem is the 3830 is supposed to only have one fan, instead of 2 on the 3820. You should look through this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/553306-acer-timelinex-3830-4830-5830-t-g.html

It works great! Very nice job! You have figured out how to make it work very fast. Nice!
I did not find an option for it though. So it is not possible to enable/disable this tweak in your program?

Also, just a note: if you have "Configure Switchable Graphics" window open, then it will still ask if you want to switch. Otherwise, it won't.

UPDATE: I have also tried Standby/Hibernate and graphics does NOT autoswitch as long as 3820tgTray is running! I did get a BSOD once I stopped testing, but I am not sure if it is related.

If you "burned" an image of the drivers DVD with Acer eRecovery and VirtualCD, you can access it using a freeware like Daemon Tools.
If the forum rules permit, I can post a download link from my Dropbox folder.

Speaking of turbo mode, if I don't have the driver installed then technically turbo is disabled correct?

    Waiting for an answer ;)

No, you have to mod the BIOS and disable it there.
If you not have installed the driver, the BIOS will control the turbo mode status.

Sorry. It's fixed. :) haha I would have definitely thought the website was newer than the drivers disk - didn't even think of using the dvd version. :)

So how'd you go from thinking i'm crazy, to fixing my issue? :D

I burned an actual DVD. I just didn't have my DVD drive with me last night. Thanks for the tip though - I have Daemon Tools & UltraISO. :)

I have never thought, that you are crazy. ;)

For me the two function volume control and mute shouldn't be connected.

But you wrote, that the wanted function was working on the "factory windows" and this means a driver or software bug or simple a different version.

A look on the Recovery DVD show me a other version as on the internet page and after a simple test it works with the DVD version.

    That was it. ;)

Crap. Guess I'll wait for the BIOS flashing guide first then. I hate flashing in Windows. Too risky. If there were two BIOS chips then I'd take the risk.

Could someone who has a 3820TG with an Atheros tell me if they are able to connect to their iPhone iOS 4.3 personal hotspot?

It's just...not working for me. I can't put it any other way. The iPhone is listed as a network in my WiFi networks list, but Windows cannot connect to the network. I've tried blanking all the settings in the adapter, but nada.

Hopefully, this isn't one of those "one-off" incompatibilities between two random device that just won't talk to each other.

Mine arrived yesterday, been using it since last night, love it!

I took off most of the crapware that came preinstalled, kept some of the Acer stuff.

    i5 480 - 6550M - 8GB DDR3 - 750GB HD

Mine came with the big 9-cell battery though, not sure whether I should be happy about that, or whether it's clunkier now.

Here are my temps, are they typical for browsing? The bottom feels maybe a bit warm to touch, but not uncomfortable, I suppose it has to do with the vents.

I think the 3820TG is such a beautiful notebook that the 9 cell completely ruins the line. If I had one, I would get a 6 cell for every-day use and keep the 9 cell for travel. I have 2 6 cells and can easily get 10 hours of use out of them when traveling.

    Hi all,

I'm in the market for a new laptop and I'm still deciding whether I pick up a current 3820tg, or wait for one of the new sandy bridge laptops.

The 3820tg is offered in a few guises where I live:
    i5-460m with Radeon HD 5650
i5-480m with Radeon HD 6650 (adds another $100)
i5-480m with Radeon HD 6650 (adds another $170 from first one)

What are peoples' thoughts on whether the i5-480m is significantly better than the i5-460m? I do a lot of video encoding, and some other CPU-hungry applications.

From what I've read, the HD6550 is essentially a rebranded HD5650 so if there is not much difference between the -460m and -480m I think I'd rather spend the cash on a SSD and go for the 'basic' model.

Having said all of that, are people expecting significant improvements with the 3830 for people who do CPU-intensive tasks?

I'm only a light gamer, and linux is my primary OS which makes the prospect of nvidia unpleasant...!

    Any thoughts appreciated!

If you have to buy it now, I'd suggest to go for the cheapest, because if the i5-460m is not enough, then i5-480m isn't either, and makes more sense to spend $100 less if you will end up upgrading with an i7.
