Has anyne figured out how to control is the UMTS/3G module on at startup? I would like it to be off on normal startups. Dritek registry doesn't have similar values for 3G as it does for Bluetooth and Wifi.

I tried to make similar with the name "3G" but that doesn't seem to work. Also if someone tries to figure this out and testes it. You need to really turn the machine off. In restart those which are on stays on.

And I'm still having those nasty crashes where everything on the screen just stays still, no keys react to anything (Except for Power save key/taking power cord off). First I tought I would blame ATI but yesterday It hanged in battery life on Intel just couple of seconds after awaken from sleep mode.

Temps should be ok, they are somewhere 40-55 C.

Great video. Are you also a Pink Floyd fan? That second track on your video is only from my all time favorite `Floyd album from back in the day.

    Anybody know it?

Echoes, from the album Meddle.Listen to this entire track, late at night, or in the wee hours, alone in your room with the lights turned off,and I guarantee you you`ll start seeing things.I could go on but I think I`ll just keep the rest of this to myself, thanks.

Here's the 450M for the hungarian market:

ACER Aspire TimelineX 3820TG-5454G50N (LX.PV102.265) | NotebookZone.hu szaküzlet és webáruház

However, it comes with only 1 Year warranty, the extension is like 20.000 HUF (89 USD).

    So 450M + 500GB HDD + 3 years warranty costs 270.000 HUF (1210 USD)

My 430M + 320 GB HDD + 3 years warranty (free gift) cost me 218.000 HUF (978 USD)

Not sure whether the 450M's performance gain and the 180 GB additional storage space is worth 52.000 HUF (232 USD).

Long story short, the 450M is here, hurray! :D

When will the 520M arriwe? :)

Hi guys. I´ve just got one with Intel Core i5 430M , ATI HD5650,and 640GB HD. So far so good, but there´s one thing that surprised me while I was putting it through its paces. While a streamed , HD 1028 clip ran absolutely smoothly with the the Intel HD graphic chip switched on , it stuttered a bit with the dedicated card. I´m not very knowledgable about this, but is there something wrong ? Thanks for answering

So Bronksy I'm itching to see you do a i7 620m install. When are you planning to get her on the operating table to do the transplant ?

I'm thinking of pressing forward soon and buying a i7 620m to drop into the unit soon..

@i5 Overclockers, you seem to have all gone quite? No real word on the best full time stable overclock you can do on the i5 430m?

Whats the best you have managed to do? Can you get anywhere near 3.2Ghz without any issues? If its fine that almost outweighs the i7 620m cost and hassle Vs getting an overclockable unit with 3G modem

Wow! Actually, the price difference is almost as big as it's worth buying the 430M model and changing the processor to 620M from ebay. And 500 GB is not your dream when you are planning a SSD. But I think when the cheaper shops are going to sell it the price will be all right. ATM, the cheapest 430M is 203.000 HUF.

I thought I had the CPU the other day but the guy sold it the night before I told him I wanted it. So, I'm ordering from China. Probably next week. Still trying to figure out which cables to buy, so I can order them at the same time. I'll probably do the swap in a couple of weeks. Don't tell me you're going to beat me again.

Still trying to decide which paste to use. I like Mx2, I've used it a lot and am familiar with it. Is diamond really any better? Anybody have any data?

I have to say, I am loving this computer. It works flawlessly for me.

Is it a 4.. something or a 5.. something model? I thought that the 640 GB HDD is only available in the new batch, but if yours is a 5.. it means that the new batch got the 430M processor too.

Can we try to collect some info on the overclocking possibilities? As far as I know it is possible to overclock the 5... series and the Singapore 620m models with the G51J profile, and there were some hacks with manual registers for the 4... series, but not everyone was successful. Kiskapu, as you are looking for overclocking, can you try the mentioned registers to overclock your 4... series? It was somewhere in this thread?

What is "clickity clack clickity clack"? Would you recommend getting an Acer over the Envy 14 if it was much much easier to buy the Acer (I mean, in Europe)? I always thought that HP has a better quality, but I have been deeply disappointed with Lenovo in the recent years, so I wouldn't be surprised if Asus and Acer would actually be better than the big ones these days. I have no experience with HP but it is a bit frightening that they couldn't fix the E15 under two generations.

BTW, which webcam app do we use on the 3820TG? And what is the Intel program in the Apps.

Thanks, do you have any of that jelly effect in some games? Bronksy it hardly makes it worth the $$$ To get a i7 620 @ 299 dollars Vs just overclocking.

    A i5 450m @ 3.2 would only be a tag below a i7 620m? I know where talking an extra 1mb cache but the i7 is a hotter unit as well.

The way I see it is when I want max performance, jump into setfsb, bump it up to near i7 620 levels.

I'm going to think on this one. Looks like i might opt for a i5 450m model with the 3G UMTS modem. Plus bluetooth 3.0 It would then be the perfect model for me. Well once I get the backlit keyboard again.

Cost wise it would be cheaper to get a i5 450m model Vs buying a i7 620m @ $299. And sell this backlit one on ebay. Should go quick..with all the interest and my mod already done and tested.

Just means I have to damn well backlit mod another keyboard :( That will suck as its no easy task. Hopefully it will easier second time round.

3820tg UMTS / 3g modem owners, hows the software. Can you make voice calls or send SMS messages via the software?

Just need to know as to renew my monthly or weekly vodafone 3g internet, I have to send an SMS. Would hate to have to remvoe the sim card and use my mobile phone each time. I idea would be leave the sim card in the notebook all the time.

Hmmmm. You're getting me thinking. I should try the OC and see how everything runs at work. I have already tested the proprietary software for the satelite imagery and everything runs well. That is our most demanding application. I'm seeing very nice accelleration from the GPU. It looks like the ATI Stream technology works as well as the NVIDIA CUDA, at least in my applications.

I already miss the I7QM from the M4500 that we gave back last week, but wonder what the 450M can do OC'd. I guess I should try first. I'll give it a test this week to make sure there are no anomolies with the software from the OC. I have a presentation already assembled that just needs a little editing. I can load it up on my SSD and see how the CPU handles the processes. Who knows? If you think about it, the new CPU is 35% of the price of the whole computer. I guess I should see if my unit will OC first.

    Thanks.

I'm planning to switch to a momentus XT next week, and I'm not 100% sure what to do is in this situation. I will be doing a fresh install of W7 and then I must add all drivers and such. Which is the best to do this? Should I backup the drivers on the pc now before and then install them on my fresh copy of W7, or should I download all the drivers from Acer's website? I want everything working.

Hendrickson, how did you do and is everything working fine? I see some have problems, like FN + arrows and such.

The driver will only update when you have the setting in the bios on the "discrete" setting, not "switchable".

    Bronsky

@havsbaden - This is how I did a clean install. http://forum.notebookreview.com/6465732-post1613.html I made the backup from eRecovery first and reinstalled my own drivers. I did not load any of the applications. Everything works perfectly. I could not make Beta ABR work for me, somebody else was able to make it work and explained the issue on this thread. It was just as easy to manually install the cert and key.

@zeem - It looks like computeruniverse.com will not ship to the US or Canada anymore. :( I think too many models came back and its not worth their time.

Canada seems to have turned away every computer shipped, so far. Computeruniverse shipped into the US with no problem. Kind of ironic. I think Canada is a no-go, when it comes to importing computers from international sellers. If someone can locate another on-line seller that will ship to the US, the units might make it thru. I wonder if the same shipping rule applies for carriers like UPS or FedEx, who fly cargo on their own planes, rather than using common carriers to transport mail?

Anybody try Singapore? Nearly everyone getting their Envy 14s are getting them from Asia and they're shipped in an airplane. I don't know how that's different. Maybe it's becuase they go FedEx. I'll bet Singapore can ship to the US.

So after all the talk about the 3820TG I went and picked up one as well (Anyone want to buy my 5820TG? :p ).

And it's one damn fine machine for the price and size. Since it's already well tested I'll go straight to the fun part: overclocking!

    Stock 3dmark06:

GPU can be overclocked to 740/1100MHz, not stresstest stable though, but gaming/3dmark stable. 690/1100MHz is the safest clock for everyday use it seems.

And for CPU I got max 160 Bclk, next step (167 Bclk) is unstable. But 160 Bclk is still very good.

And 3dmark06 result with overclocked CPU and GPU:

And temps after 1hr of prime95 max temps + furmark max burn.

I have to admit that this computer realy excels at cooling, even at high overclocks with unrealistic high stress the temps is well within an acceptable range. Take the 5820TG for example, under stresstest it reaches 100C and throttles at stock speeds...

The 3820TG fans are very silent compared to the one fan of the 5820TG as well.

The screen of the 3820TG (AUO122C) is a lot worse than the samsung in my 5820TG. Most importantly there is some sort of "pattern" that is seen as lines from upper left to lower right corner. It's not noticeable when gaming/watching video or if I sit a bit away from the computer, but on light-coloured images/websurfing etc it's noticeable. I had another AUO screen some time ago and it had the same thing. So it's not an defect. I guess it's just an "getting used to" thing. Beside this the screen is crisp and clear, but lacks colour details and dark blacks of course.

The speakers in 3820TG is a lot weaker than the ones in 5820TG, lower volume and more "dull" sound.

But overall I'd rate the 3820TG as an better computer than 5820TG. The two-fan cooling system is genious, size and weight is great and it's very silent and cool under use.

In the canadian version of the 3820tg i have the AUO322C display and i see the same thing your talking about..

but with mine maybe it's the LEDs and the refresh rate is slow? but when i load light image colours like when replying to this forum.. i can see a light flicker when their is colour images around or other grey colors.

but again this only happens in low brightness.

Just a copy of my german posting in a other forum.

    In short words.

I don't have any external dvd-drive, so I will try to boot the harddrive with my desktop pc that includes one. Is there any specific requirements for like the motherboard to support this?

If it doesn't work, is it perhaps possible to start eRecovery from my desktop pc's OS, if I just connect the harddrive to my desktop pc, as another harddrive.

Nope, I`m from norway. You know; that small country that lives on sucking up oil from below the sea. :D And yes we have some of the worlds highest taxes as well, like 25% VAT. about 70% of gas price is tax too ;)

Still can't complain; almost free medical care and higher average salary than most other countries.

Thinking about putting in an 500gb momentus XT disk or the new 7200rpm 750GB seagate disk to get some speed and storage capacity. Gonna be some iso files on it since there is no ODD so SSD is not an option for now at least. Not gonna use an external ODD, ruins the whole point of having an 13.3" PC.

Not sure if Computeruniverse does refuse shipping to the US because on their site, shipping to the US is still offer. They also lowered the price of shipping by 10 Euro on one of the 3820TG and the other 3820TG(the one Bronsky and I bought) got a 10 euro deduction on the price .....

Ya, looks like computeruniverse will still take an order, though it might bounce before it's even shipped.

next month, if it's the only option, I might see if anyone on here would be willing to receive one and ship it to me. I'd pay a nice extra fee for the service. A good ebay seller score, and some kind of trusted money goods transfer would work to protect both buyer and seller.

    any takers?

Didn't know Norway had an I5-520M 3820TG for sale? Or do you have an I5-450M? Hard to tell which program is reading your CPU wrong. I guessed Singapore because I saw the I5-520M.

    Bronsky

Have any of the I7-620M owners OC'd their CPU's? Does the SetFSB work on them? They're all early models, I would guess they are built like Hendrickson's.

BTW, I have the AUO322C as well and don't have the sparkley issue with the LED turned down low. I just compared the Acer's display to my borther's new Asus U33JC display (same resolution) and my Acer is clearly brighter and with better color saturation.

I would like to tinker with the calibration but don't have a calibrator. Who had read the German article that spoke of recalibrating the display? Anybody have a link? I couldnt find it with search.

It's an 450M. The 450M is an ideal option speed/cost wise. It's even slightly faster than an 520M due to faster internal bus speed, except for programs taking advantage of Vt-d instructions, or using only one core.

Also wondering if SetFSB works on 520M for the E14. Someone confirmed that SetFSB can OC the 450M to 3.2ghzish range. Pretty damn good for a donation equivalent to buying 2 packs of yugioh cards from Japan.

Here is my Acer 13.3" AUO322C, 720p display in front of my LG 24" 1080p display. Given the difference in size and resolution, I think the Acer holds up well. I guess not all AUP322C's are created equal.
