Hi guys question, what clock generator should I use to overclock my CPU? I'm using setfsb 2.2.129.95
TIA!![]()
-
My build date is May 14, 2010...
-
So my model, with the UMTS unit has been overclocked before?
Model:
3820TG-5454G32n
ID: 90383718
SKU: LX.PV002.003
EAN: 4717276118532
I guess the fact my unit will behave a new build date, most likely a build date from say June it may not be overclockable
At least I'll have a UMTS module.
Fingers crossed I can overclock it... Maybe its only a certain build dates that Acer used a different PLL clockgen. It really sucks if its random...
Edit:
Looks at how quick UPS is vs DHL ex Germany:

Lets try and put some extra pressure on Acer to release the proper 3820TG in North America.
"Acer Team" seems to reply once in awhile to questions and comments on their Facebook page here :

3820TG has been talked about and requested on here a few times already.
Good luck everyone -

You make some valid points, I forget to mention my SIM is also separate from my phone its just a pain the the ar$e to swap the sim cards. I still need my phone to active my coupon for weekly internet via SMS. But I see the UTMS software does allow SMS messages too.
Well how will I send to the USA/CA with the battery policy now? I don't fancy filling in 25 pages of declarations. -

This clearly shows it.
1: Start SetFSB as administrator
2: choose diagnosis and pick ics9lprs365bglf as clock generator, click get FSB.
3: change values as shown, DO NOT click apply before you have changed all 3 values, after all 3 values are changed you click apply.
4: Success! If not: you have another clock generator and this method doesn't work.
Works fine on my 3820TG:
3820TG-5454G50n - LX.PXZ02.004
Assembly date 10.06.2010 -
I think it depends on your mobile contract and your carrier as well. If they can't provide the high data rates (HSDPA/HSUPA) und you're using one SIM card, it's better to use BT.
But there's another option to connect to the internet through your mobile: wifi tethering. Several devices are capable of being a mobile hotspot. I've got just one SIM card and am able to enjoy full speed
-
Guys as I have said the problem with one of us selling them to you on Ebay is that we must pay european VAT, which is somewhat substancial. If you add a double transportation cost, it will end up roughly to 1000 euros, i.e around 1300 usd.
I guess it's a no go. Otherwise I'd be happy to help you. -
oh yah, tried that already and doesn't seem to work. It instantly freezes the screen and needs a hard reset. I did change the three registers as timi instructed but same result. I guess this setfsb version doesn't support my motherboard. Anyway, thanks oc-freak!ü
-
You intend to oc the 620M?!
-
yep! But not so sure how to
Proly the shareware version of setfsb would support my board. You guys have any info about oc'ing 620m?
-
Yes, I saw the pictures. But I am very interesting in the backside of the display and the fingerprint problem and these pictures are missing at your post.
Thanks
Try it on the freeware way or try AsusG73JH.
I Have the same model in front of me and a fsb of 160MHz works great. (164MHz should also work on a few post but 165 crash it.) -
Mine is 5454G32n (LX.PXZ02.003), so not quite the same
Mac, what's yours? -
There are differences even within the same model number. Ponjornoh and I have the same model. His was made before mine. His is OC'able and Mine is not. On the other hand, earlier models like Hendrickson's and AspireAnt's are not OC'able. It seems to be random. It is probably what ever clockgen was on the assembly table on the day your model was made that determines OC'ability.
@all
Just finished a couple of hours of satelite image editing on my 3820TG. The work is much faster with the GPU OC'd. Just to test out real world stresses on the GPU, I OC'd it to 700/1100. I did everything to those images that the software would let me do, rotation, etc., and I am extremely impressed with the GPU. I was able to make it shutdown by rendering a high resolution, infrared (720p) image over and over, in realtime, but the GPU immediately recovered on its own. So, I backed off the OC a bit.
For my work needs, the I5-450M is probably sufficient for the job. After working with that I7-720QM, however, I am spoiled and am sure that I will want more power eventually. I really like this notebook and will probably be keeping it for quite some time (my last Dell lasted 4 years). I just don't think I'm going to do anything else (other than power the KB) at this time. With the new CPU's coming out in the fall, I'll wait will then and see if I can put an I7-640M in here. Maybe even a 680M? Intel Core i7 Processor 680M Rumor | Gadgetrix ? Computer Smartphone Electronic Gadget Review Guide
I am sure that Hendrickson's going to get an OC'able unit. It's Karma.

I think it would make more sense to collect a screenshot or just the pure register values of the SetFSB diagnostic page instead of just a model number, this way, sonner or later we could see what kind of IC's are out there and how many different versions we have. I would suggest to use a demo of shareware version, maybe it has better checks for generating those pages.
-
Can you please post the link again its not working?
I have HSDPA were I use it mostly so its good. Use my phone has Mobile AP. But there are two issues. One I use other carrier for phone calls and secondly it drains my mobile battery in about 1-2 hours on mobile AP mode. Not exactly mobility as I want it. The UTMS unit will be very handy to have and I will use it a lot.
I well and truly hope so!!! Fingers crossed for me
But it seems its all down to luck then. Random PLL chips being used. Since many would buy the slighty cheaper non UTMS units I hope mines the in same batch as Just a Nicks
-
I hope it for you.
-
Expected Delivery tomorrow, what a different UPS is compaired to DHL. I guess I will find out tomorrow if I'm home when it arrives.
-
Woohoo another 3820TG?
-
in fact, Hendrickson, can I borrow some money off you?
-
The only difference is silver screen cover, rest is unchanged, yes it has same black fingerprint magnet rim around the screen as other 3820tg models.

hey 3820TG owners.
which graphics card does GPU-Z default to when you load it up?
the ati or the intel?
I'm trying to figure out why amd gpu clock tool 0.9.26.0 (hd 5870 version) won't work with the envy14.
gpu-z defaults to the intel. rivatuner thinks the intel is gpu0 while the radeon is gpu1.
amd clock tool may be trying to modify the intel, which is why it's crashing my envy14 completely. -
When plugged in, the ATI is the default GPU. When on battery, it may be either, depending on which profile is active (depending on the condition of the battery). We have an option in the bios to switch from "switchable" graphics to "dedicated" on start up. For some of us, you can not update your driver if you have not selected "dedicated" in the bios before start up. You might try to see if you have that.
If we can do anything to help, let us know.

MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
there's no choice to go from dedicated to switchable or back.
and yeah it boots the same way as yours (defaults to ati on power, intel on battery)
however it lists the ati as GPU1 and the intel as GPU0 in riva tuner and gpu-z.
or well GPU-Z starts with the intel and you have to switch it down to the radeon. I think this is where amd gpu clock tool is messing up (it's trying to check on GPU0 which is the intel which is off which then crashes the laptop).
go run gpu-z: GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility
and see which card pops up at the start while the ati is on. Even with the ati on for me on my envy it still pops up the intel first.
edit: We just got msi afterburner to work with it. hell yeah! -
Intel is the first. Tested on wire and AMD active.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
weird.
well. I managed to get msi afterburner to work. It doesn't clock down when not underload though -
I didn't notice any difference in Civ IV. Played like 30 mins both overclocked and not overclocked, no difference.
-
Looks more and more like it's something unique at my end. But what?
Mac -
Mac I would do a complete wipe and redo windows and see if its still there.
Yes but not for long I will sell my other one hopefully for about the same price I brought it. So UK users, watch Ebay UK for a 5650 ATI model soon

The right vent of my 3820tg makes some loud noise when I turn the laptop more than 90 degrees. This only annoys me because I usually leave my laptops upside down for better ventillation if I plan to leave them under heawy load for a long period (like rendering a movie). What can this be, and does anybody else experience this? Can this be a risk to my system in the long run?
-
Woh. better not to tilt notebooks. Heat pipes are designed with a liquid in them which have a specific way of flowing. Tilting laptops can cause extremely high temperatures. Also, it may very well be that fans are not designed to operate if you turn it upside down. The magnetic levitation fans these days just levitate the fan in place, not sure what happens when you turn it. If you want better circulation of air, buy a cooling pad.
Also, what Catalyst version are you guys using with it? Does Catalyst 10.6 work fully? I mean, what's the newest or best driver to use if you want full functionality (no issues like can't switch to IGP, etc)? -
On the heatpipes I would disagree. I think that most cooling heatpipes used in computers don't rely on gravity to make sure the condensed liquid gets back in place, but rather through capillary force.
Fans however are often very prone to have different noise when in different positions.
-
Just put in an order for a 3820TG with Core i3 350M and 5650. Lately I'd be considering the Asus U35JC but wanted something with a bit more powerful graphics. Hopefully I don't regret it
-
I know this from experience. Once I had an Asus G1S, I would sometimes use it while I'm sitting on the couch or on my bed. When I got up, I usually didn't want to put it flat as that would block all the heat vents, so I chose to put it sideways. I would usually return to the find fan on max blast when I return, even though it's idling. Then I would put it flat again and it quickly spins down. One time I found out that when I put it sideways the GPU temp went into the 110C range idling.
Doing some research into the physics of heatpipes reveals a lot. Conventional and simple heatpipes as ones used in notebook have a condenser and an evaporater that are designed to function when they are at the same horizontal level without tilt. There are special designs that allow heat pipes to work against gravity, but are usually far more complex. Read: Loop heat pipe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia -
Any chance of getting the I5 instead? Too late to change?

-
remove my mistake sorry
-
I think I'll stick with the i3. The i5 is about a US$150 upgrade and I'm buying an iPhone 4 in the near future so putting it towards that
.
Ordered from a Taiwanese site and shipping to New Zealand. -
Do you think they would ship to the US?
-
I'm almost certain they do. Here is the list of models they sell. I bought the $27,900 twd one.
I managed to place the order using google translate for some bits
but it went pretty well in the end, plus I ordered the thin keyboard cover for it.
After adding it to your cart you select the shipping destination and it will show the shipping price. According to the FAQ shipping is about 3-4 days. -
the i5-450 is $1200 including shipping to US.
Thanks for posting another site! Let us know how it goes. -
Kinda disapointing to see that none of these 3820 Acers comes with more than 2GB of ram.For a moment there I thought something with 5650 graphics might be in my future.
-
Actually it's a good thing that they come with 2 GB, cuz mine came wif 2 and I juz went to source for the cheapest 2 GB upgrade myself and the upgrading was easy; u dun have to open up ur lappy. I was 'forced' to have 8Gb for RAM for my prev Vaio Z which u know these companies place a premium on any extra component in-built compared to what is the market price for the same component. Hope u understand wat i'm trying to say; too lazy to compose in Queen's English
-
you can get a second stick for $48 shipped at newegg, add a $20 keyboard, and you get to almost $1300
it's pricey, but HOW MUCH do you really want this?
vs. the e14
pros
It's thinner and lighter
It's easily overclockable to 9k on 3dmark06
If your lucky it's cpu overclockable
more battery life
e14 has cpu whine
cons
warranty issues
low res screen
not as pretty
no eSata
gotta weigh those pros and cons.
I still have a month before I have the money. Hoping for a US or CA 5650 release. -
how much performance gain you think from the i3 350m vs i5 430m and i5 450m. from the benchmarks I've seen, the difference is minimal and the only thing that might make you go for a i5 is the turbo boost. any comments?
-
very interesting. how is reinstalling the drivers on this thing? can you just download the drivers listed on the US acer website and get everything working easily (switchable graphics)?
-
Is anyone else looking into getting a 3820TG from Korea? 3BarJohn posted some information over in the Official Arrandale Timeline thread, and $866 for a i5-430 unit with HD5650 and 4 GB RAM seems pretty compelling to me. I'm looking at buying through BUYfromKOREA.kr, and even after their handling fee, I'm estimating a cost around $1135, assuming a shipped weight of around 4.0 kg. (Anyone care to clarify that guess?)
From 3BarJohn's pics, it looks like I wouldn't even need to replace the keyboard, since except for the additional hangul imprints on the keycaps, it looks to be a standard US layout. -
lao3, do you prefer the 3820TG over your prem carbon vaio z?
-
Yeah, somehow I do, for:-
1) The Z was too expensive; I treated it with so much care that when someone else borrows it; I got very uneasy, even when my wifey uses it
2) battery life is almost 3 times that of Z
3) the USB ports on Z are weirdly positioned
4) the Home, PgUp buttons etc, on the Z can only be used in conjunction with the "Fn" button
5) Weight of it is only slightly more than the Z
BUT of cuz the Z incorporates almost all of the best in a 13". If I ever become rich suddenly, I would buy it again
(I sold it mainly cuz I had some sudden emergency need for cash, but found that I still need a lappy so I got the 3820TG which is the best alternative to the Z for me)

throw down "E14 has stock clocks like a sony" into the pros for the 3820TG.
it also hates amd gpu clock tool.
still. screen is really damn awesome
