You are lucky with your screen. I am saving for an Intel G2 too :) The most reliable SSD still these days. All other brands (except Samsung OEM drives) have between 10%-25% error rate in the first year.

OC-Freak, do you think the 5 second freezing in the 3dmark demo could be because of this too? I had freezes at stock clocks too. I will check the AAM settings, thanks.

    Thanks!

Watch out for the Samsung SSDs on sale now. The larger capacity ones (256GB) use Indilix (sp). controllers. Heard some weren't so good.

OC-Freak knew a fix on the spikes, apperently the spikes on my 3820tg was not caused by the ATI GPU but rather the Western Digital HDD.

The fix was to download quietHDD and disable APM & AAM feature.
    I hope this helps

    Hi guys,

im also thinking of buying one of those, but I have two major questions that I couldnt figure out clearly in the whole thread. I read numerous pages but still have those questions:

    1) Can I switch off the ATI graphics card with a keykombination in windows or do I always have to restart the notebook?

    2) I read numerous things about the displaypanel now. How can I figure out which panel I have, which one is better and which ones are used in this notebook?

im looking forward to your answers since there are no usefull threads in german (im from austria)

    1. Can just right click in windows and switch, it will blank the screen for couple seconds and its done.
    2. check on device manager...

In addition to the switching method that was already mentioned, you can assign user defined hotkeys to do it.

    Parts everywhere ...

I keep getting emails from my traveling parts telling me where they are. :)

My I5-540M is in Oakland, CA. My switches are in Dallas, TX. My IC Diam. 7 is in Newark, NJ. My screws are in my local post office here in NJ. And my speaker is probably sitting comfortably in the cargo hold of the SS Rotterdam, making its way from Germany. :D

OC, when you changed the screen, did you meet with anything which could cause brightness shifting? I mean there is no inverter, but isn't there anything functioning similar to the inverter? What makes me crazy is that brightness shifting only happens with ATI vga, not with Intel. Does anyone have any kind of explanation for this? Did your screen had flickering when on low brightness, or brightness shifting, when on ATI?

Can you check the following? If I put my ear to the bottom center of the laptop (while running), I hear CPU whine. It's not really strong, but it's there. For me, it's stronger when on battery than when on AC. The middle vents are a good starting point, for me it's the loudest near the white sticker.

I know not everyone hears CPU-whine, so it's not an objective test, but I'm curious about if you can hear it.

At the first glance it looks to be an improvement, don't suspcet any miracles though, but black is certainly darker than it was on my AUO322.

Don't know what I should hear, there's an electrical sound, or sort of.

Not really. There is an "CCD board" at the top of the screen, which I think is for the webcam only, but it may have some inverter functions for the screen as well.

It's not the CPU. That are the capacitor from the voltage control, they are swinging.

    Hi all,

I picked up a Staples (Canada) 3820TG this morning and I am happily in the proces of letting GParted copy partitions from the factory HDD over to a 500GB Momentus XT that will end up in the drive bay later this afternoon. I have also upgraded the 4GB factory DDR3 to a matched set of Muskin 7:7:7:20.

I bought a 3820T (i3-350M) last week and in the end decided I needed to have some level of video accelleration above what Intel can muster.

Here is my WEI scores from the 3820T

    Processor..............6.3
    Memory.................6.3
    Graphics................4.6
    Gaming graphics......5.1
    Primary HDD...........5.9

The system as tested had the Muskin DDR3 and the Momentus XT in it.

Stay tuned... Once I get the TG running I'll post those results.

*edit* I also have an i5 540M OEM on order...

This system, while tiny, may end up rivalling my Asus G73!

Needless to say I will probably be selling the 3820T very soon.

Hey I've just bought this lovely computer and it seems nice so far. I read the first page about overclocking etc and kept on reading until I found out that the thread had 428 pages!

Therefore I wonder if someone could point out the easiest things I could do to improve performance etc and some general tips about the computer so I don't have to check every page ;), would be really helpful. Thank you! Would be enough with short words so i can search for it.

    I would say
    1. Clean windows install (biggest speed boost in your life ever)
    2. SetFSB Asus G73 profile, GetFSB, if no error, buy shareware, use it
    3. AMD GPU tool, find your maximums by using it with ATITool artifact scanning
    4. quietHDD, disable AAM, APM

I was describing that sound too. I thought it's CPU whine, or it's because of CPU power switching.

On battery it's much louder for me, but really not as bad as on other laptops where I have heard it.

I mean CPU-whine ususally means this (at least I was describing that noise). I think a CPU itself cannot really produce noise, only the parts around the CPU. But I don't know enough about CPUs, is it possible that a CPU itself is producing whines?

kiskapu, I really don't believe in WEI scores, but I did it:

    processor: 6.8
    ram: 5.9
    vga: 6.7
    3d: 6.7
    hard drive: 5.9

    all at stock

I would prefer Cinebench R10 for anything computation related. I got:
    3712 / 8293 @ stock
    4350 / 9376 @ BLCK 160

Did you notice any keyboard flex in the 3820T ?, mine has noticable flex on the keys 4,5 and R,T. I don't see this on my 4820TG though

Do you use the freeware or the shareware version of setfsb?

Does anyone know if the 3820TG card reader can read SDHC cards and successfully transfer video from the card to the laptop?

I do not have a SDHC card to test it.

Need an answer as soon as possible, please. I will need to buy a SDHC card reader otherwise. Thanks.

I assume so, SDHC is a standard which allows anything up to 32gb so hopefully it will work.

    Thanks! +rep to you too.

My 8-yr old Mini-DVD Canon camcorder is dying on me. Must be the mechanical parts!

Just ordered the Panasonic HDC-TM700 (32GB internal flash memory + takes SDHC cards). Can't believe it's only $829 at Amazon.com now. It does more than its peer competitors and costs almost half the price! It's also the best in low light conditions too.

Amazon is also running a special on Transcend 32GB SDHC cards for $67! Great price!

Now, I just need to add a SSD to my 3820TG and get rid of another mechanical device!

I am wondering about the battery as mine never shows more than 3 hrs 10 min on the indicator when it's unplugged and on power saver with 1/3 brightness on a full recharge on the basic gpu. Also, Putting at the ati gpu only lowers the battery by 30 mins
