after reading the engadget price details of these, i'm soooooo glad i purchased a 3820tg for $700 last week.

they will cost $1133 to $1374

not to mention the 2gb ram

    epic fail on acers part.

if this is the new apple like strategy they are talking about - they are doomed.

Let's not exaggerate, shall we? There are models with 2GB RAM and models (configs) with 4GB RAM as well.
Some people who want to upgrade to 8GB may actually prefer this. Not to mention that it's DDR3 so it's quite likely that it's one 2GB module which would make it perfect for those who want to upgrade to 6GB.
There's nothing wrong with having more config options available.

i'm not exaggerating, i'm commenting on the prices and specs quoted on engadget.

do you really feel the 3830tg is worth the extra $ over the 3820tg ?

if you are happy with those prices, good for you.

personally i do not believe they will compare well in sales compared with the likes of sony with similar priced equipment.

I will comment on the prices when some actual prices of units that are on sale will be available.
Currently we have different prices from different countries but mostly virtual ones- no units available.
Competition between retailers is likely to get them down. Second thing- in some cases companies that are in good relations with manufacturers get some time (a month or so) when they are the only retailer with certain notebook.
You can imagine that they don't really keep their prices down during that period.

All in all what I do- or rather don't do- is I don't comment on things that are not final.

Pricing differs country to country, I strongly believe that the price of 3830TG will be similar to 3820TG.

Did they really make the new 3830TG .3 lbs heavier than the 3820TG? Engadget says the 3830TG is 4.12lbs.

So what are the advantages of the 3830 over the 3820?

    Processor:
    Core i3-2310M v I5-460m
Probably about the same speed if not a bit slower. A bit of a bump in integrated graphics (but less than you would see in a faster Sandybridge which have faster clocked GPU's)

    Battery life:
Optimus (pro's and cons) and overally sounds like it will be a bit better.

    Keyboard:
    More chiclet style

    Ports:
    USB 3

    GPU:
    540M vs 6550
Pretty similar, except now with Optimus. Pros and cons. But the new integrated graphics offer faster video conversion.

...So waiting to see battery life- but overall the USB 3 seems to be the only real upgrade. Not really inspired at this point.

So Guys I think i Europe its coming in beginning of May :) Should I wait or Should i Buy a 3820tg for 18%less then the 3830.. And yeeh the Price is Going To Be the same as for the 3820Tg 8000swedish which is On todays Currency to dollar :1260 dollars

    Yeeh Sweden is Expensive

And that is with 1 ddr 4gb Memory so One slot free

I'm trying to stay close to 4lbs or less. So the 4830 is a bit heavy (and has a lot of competition near 5lbs.)

I guess at this stage I am leaning towards a Lenovo E420s. At 4.14lbs it seems like it is the same wt as the 3830TG. And the ATI 6630 is close enough to the 540m. Also likely a better keyboard and more custom, ization options. But I guess I'll have to see what the price is.

Along the same lines the SA/SB sounded promising, but it prices out too high with options. So I'm going to have to give a second look at prior generation machines like the 3820TG or the Z(if another deal ever pops up.) Or go for a smaller laptop like the Toshiba 835 or X201 and give up the discrete graphics altogether.

Unfortunately there is no perfect choice out there.

I'd say the Z and the 3820TG were pretty close to ideal for their price points last generation.

$1300 for the i5 version? I'm better off getting an SB then, more Ram, better CPU and a ODD.

base on my usage thus far

    Overall built.
I was worried sometime ago after watching some vids regarding the flexing n "loosey" hinges , but now its totally gone and built quality seem good enuf. No creaking on palm area as some user found out on demo unit

    Keyboard.
Firm and nice with just ok amount of springgyness (if that make any sense lol ), kinda remind me of my old Vaio SR55. looking great n feel amazing.

    Display.
Here comes the not so good part, i found out after trying several angle that the white is kinda bright and washed out. Maybe theres setting for this but, i think my sr55 old screen is kinda better. And the panel is made of high glossy fingerprint magnet plastic, And rather cheap'ish looking one too.

    Mouse
I really dont use pad before, bcoz i tend to miss the scroll but 4830tg seem good enuf and wide enuf. Loving the mouse

    Speakers
Pleasantly surprise by the speakers! its loud and gotta hint of bass. Good enuf for me to eliminated the reason to buy those USB external ones.

    Battery
Other then the usual "Power save" , "Balance" and "high performance" Acer throw in this PowerSmart function complete with its own dedicated button. at "power save" and this button activated , i got abnormal batt estimate at over 6 hours! i got some batteryCare pics coming up for this

havent really goes into gaming yet, so there, my so called review lol

Maybe Acer can do a free upgrade program for the 38-/48-/5820TG consumers!

I'm very interested to see how the new units measure up. Acer really has a great design and it's too bad they aren't more aggressive in North America.

Your post was late by a week. :(

I am really hard pressed for a decision.
One hand I really like this laptop, pricing is slightly high compared to the Acer Aspire 4750G series but Blue is really nice.

On the other hand my current laptop is really a performer not in the specs sense but the software state.
It boots really fast with well optimized disklayout plus it dual boots with openSUSE with no package breakages (unlike my previous Fedora), It has WINE running Office 2007 so it is really an awesome machine to work on.

Moreover from the current state of affair, I can notice an increase in consumer waste and I do not want to be part of it.

I really don't want to sell off my current laptop it is working perfectly although it looks a bit worn out (I never take of the exterior because its main purpose is to do my stuff good enough), and it probably won't be sold for a good price although optimization is top notch.

It is like ditching an excellent wife for something new.

Do not expect simple plug and play operation of linux on any switcher, and while there's a light at the end of the tunnel for both ATI and Nvidia, the one in Nvidia's tunnel has a locomotive attached to it. :) srsly tho, it looks like swithicng graphics supported by either or both the open source and closed source ATI drivers will be able to get put into a near future version of Ubuntu or something. Optimus is still more of a "turn it off in linux, IGP only" option right now.

$400 difference if you go from i3 to i5, wow!

EDIT: Seems like you also get the 540M with the i5, so that's why there is such a difference in price. Too bad we can't customize like Sony or Dell. I'd like the i5, but don't care about the 540M

Is the 4830tg only coming with SB i5 cpu?? No i7??? =(

My only 2 issues with Acer Timeline is (1) no i7 (2) Screen res is only 1366...why not 1600!!

But overall...i thik its a pretty darn good laptop. I wonder if the specs on teh 5830 are better than the 4830...

PS: is it tru they only come with 2gb ram....that would be a very lame....4gb plz.

You are probably better off trying to find a store in Singapore to ship it to you. Before I bought my first 3820TG from Computeruniverse in Germany, I was talking to Firdouse in Singapore and they were willing to ship a 3820TG to me in the US. I would also expect that PCHome will have these units soon as well. A number of US owners bought theirs from PCHome.

Use Chrome, it translates enough for you to order a unit. Here is list of Singapore Stores from the Asus Club. ASUS Singapore Official Fan Club | Facebook The third one on the list is the store I was dealing with last year. My experience is that they are easier to deal with on the phone. They are not really good about email. Or, you could just wait until Canada gets the new units.

Hi I'm new and from Spain, so sorry about my english.
Here and in some pages, say that the screens are bad. I have a TravelMate 4230 since 4 years, I don't know the quality of the screen, but it can't be better than the used on the new TimelineX, right?
I want a timelinex since the last year (then was the 3820 my objective) and now it's the 3830 what I want; so I think in my case, the screen don't have to be a negative point.
With the battery built-in, the capacity of this it's 6 cells, this can give more than 6 hours?

Welcome. Your english is better than my spanish.

Under minimal use you should get close to the advertised 8 hrs. I think people get around 5 to 6 hrs.
