to codyrocco: Hi, yes i found this drive rbefore many days, I try install on my Acer Aspire 3830TG (with i5-210m and 540m), but this new drivers 4.0 are for my worse than original drivers. Original drivers are Better. Because after installing new drivers show one bug - when I activate bluetooth and than deactivate bluetooth via shortcut -> bluetooth icon is still shows in start panel and not disappears - and this bug isn't in original drivers. So I try new drivers for bluetooth but I this new drivers not recommend. I roll back from new drivers back into original drivers for bluetooth.

but new drivers on acer oficial download page for 3830/4830/5830 for CARDREADER realtek card reader version 6.1.7601.8510.8 with date release 2011/10/05 and RECOMMEND. Tjis driver works very good without any errors.

Hi everyone, wanna ask about battery wear. My wear is now at 9.75% after 50+ cycles. Is this considered normal? A little worry cos 10% wear roughly equal 35-40 mins time of battery

    Thx for ur reply :))

ThrottleStop reads temperature information directly from the CPU so bios version shouldn't make any difference. Maybe your CPU is running cooler. Does the new bios version use a different CPU fan profile? Why not post some more details and pics.

It seems now like the reported temps are the margin between the correct temp and the processors limit. Is there a way to change it?

New bios version certainly does something. I did some temp tests with prime95. I have the i5-2410m version of the 3830tg (2,3GHz - 2,9GHz with Turbo Boost). After I updated bios to 1.07 Turbo Boost only goes to 2,7GHz and when temps reach 90C it doesnt throttle, but clocks drop to 2,3Ghz. Anyone else notice this?

Just updated to the new driver. I have been monitoring my temps while playing Skyrim the last few days, and without throttle stop they always hit 85 quickly and it throttles back to an 8 multiplier (I have the i3 version). But with the new bios my max temps were 79.
I believe the difference comes from the fact that before the new bios the cpu would always try to run at a 18 multiplier or so, this time it was running at 13 the whole time. The game still ran smoothly. Looks like the CPU governs its multipliers better with this bios. Not a real fix to the throttling, but it helps.

Aviv: There is a button in ThrottleStop that lets you display and log either your CPU core temperature or the amount of temperature headroom you have until throttling begins. Click on the DTS / Temp button to toggle between these two different values.

A fix would be a new heatsink and fan that was capable of handling the heat output of this laptop. A 13 multiplier is just a new and improved throttling scheme.

Agreed. But this is definitely better then dropping to an 8 multiplier and the game lagging like crazy.
Is there any way of forcing the fan to max speeds? I noticed that when the Bios was installing the fan went crazy and sped up past any speeds its gone to when gaming. Is there any way I can force the fan to this speed when gaming?

Hey guys, I've followed these forums for a while, and my tx2000z recently died, so I wanted to get a decent laptop that could play games occasionally. I first looked at the ultrabook from asus, and realized that although I loved the resolution on the screen, the lack of a dedicated video card kinda was a downer. Also the price... So I settled on the 4830tg, and ordered one yesterday from newegg... That was AFTER reading this thread. Oddly enough, now newegg is out of stock (thankfully got shipping confirmation already though).

I couldnt find the 13.3 in stock ANYWHERE in the usa online, and couldnt order from staples of canada.

Seems like these are being discontinued or something? Maybe Acer is redesigning some of the cooling innards?

Anyway with throttlestop and the recent bios update, I think I made the right choice. I'm glad to hear they are doing "something" about it.

Ironic thing is that my hp died probably from overheating often due to bad cooling.

If there was a way to control the fan without hard-wiring it to jet-fan speeds that would be great. AFIK the 3830 never kicks into the fastest fan mode. If it did, that would allow the laptop to run faster and cooler (though louder).

Does anyone know where I can find the service manual for the AS4830TG-6450 model? I google and can't find it anywhere. I would like to know how to upgrade the memory from 4GB to 8GB, eventually change the battery and other components in case they fail after the manufacture warranty.

By the way, for about $50 more, should I get the Asus X53SV-RH71? It's heavier than the Acer, but it's core i7 with 6GB RAM.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

to pwangdel: Hi, yes model 3830/4830/5830 supported 8gb ddr3. I bought my acer aspire 3830tg with i5 only with one slot 4gb ddr3 and after what I bought notebook I bought second ram 4gb. I called on tech support and they told me that I can add a ram without lose the warranty. Now i has dualchannel 2*4GB ddr3 1333mhz cl9 jedec5x.

battery is firmly attached, you replace it only in servis(i think baterie).but second ram you can add yourself (no problem with the guarantee).

and about Asus X53SV-RH71: yes this is good notebook but with old i7:/ its bad :( this isn't sandybridge..i recommend you buy notebook with new platform but graphics is too 540m (but on net is too version with better newer cpu and gpu).

Thank you for your comments and input.

How do you add a second RAM module?

The Asus X53SV-RH71 I saw on sale has the i7-2670QM. I think this is the Sandy Bridge architecture, am I wrong?

You can't get any easier than adding the 2nd RAM in this (or most other) laptop really. You take the back off and put the ram in.

Window experience index seems to be a tad better on the AS4830-6450 (5.9) than the X53SV-RH71 (5.8) even though the later has core i7 2670QM and 6GB. I don't see the reason to pay an extra $100 (+taxes) with no noticeable gain in performance. So I decide to keep the Acer instead of getting the Asus.

Thank you all for your help

    WEI is completely useless.
Its score is always the lowest score of all meaning 5.8 has to bee HDD which means that even a lot faster notebook with a slightly slower HDD will end up with a lower score compared to an average notebook with slightly faster HDD.

Interesting, will try BF3 and see what happens. (BF3 normally can only run with the back lifted at x22 even with a heatsink full of mods). With TS off I idle at 40C instead of the normal 46-47C with it on, at least.

So you got lower idle temps with the new bios and TS off? or you are just making a statement about lower temps when not using TS?

Haven't compared with older bios, just saying I get lower temps when not using TS, as it allows the clocks to drop to 800. The interesting application of this bios would be if it dynamically adjusts the clocks based on the temperature. TS is limited in that you only have one profile to auto switch to if temps get too high, but depending on how well the BIOS update works it could make it more efficient in choosing the best clocks to keep around 90-92C, as it appears it just might.

    Here's my current setup lol:

About to try some games without TS on but logging.

Nope, throttled in COD32767:MW300. Strange, because it throttled right down to x12 when it hit 88 and it wouldn't un-throttle despite relatively low temps.

Anyone know how easy/hard it is to change the keyboard on this laptop? I'm getting it tomorrow, and want to swap a German one out for a UK one, and want to know before I buy it.

I checked for the manual, but couldn't find one that would let me know.

    Thanks :)

It's fairly easy as long as you're careful, follow the link on the original post. It will show give you a good idea of how to go about taking the laptop apart.
