Grrrr... OK it's freezing at the Acer splash screen (twice so far) and sometimes when I press power button the lights come on as if it was turning on but screen stays blank - no post - no beep codes. I have to hard power off then try again - it always boots on 2nd try. I bought a used CPU -- think this could the CPU? I also upgraded the RAM but it seems this problem only started after I put the C2D chip in -- suggestions?
-
Sounds like 'cold boot' problem. BigO had similar problem some time ago due faulty BIOS. Have you tried to update to the latest BIOS?
-
Yes - 'cold boot' - that sounds right because it only happens after the machine has been powered off for awhile.
I updated the BIOS prior to the upgrade from Acer's web site. They only had one revision available. -
I think I installed BIOS v 1.34 - which has sporadic cool boot problems according to the original post. I should have read closer. I'm going to update tonight to v 1.43 and hopefully this fixes the problem. Thanks for everyone's help!
-
Yep v1.34 has this issue. I have tried v1.40 and v1.41 and they work just fine, dunno 'bout v1.43 but I guess it'll fix all you problems

Can anybody tell me what is the maximum VGA-OUT resolution on the 5315 (X3100), wonder if there is a low limit like with tv-out (cant have native resolution with tv-out turned on).
Cheers -

There is an old thread about that..
-
Hi, I just want to ask. Is that trick works on my Aspire 4315? I've compared 4315 and 5315 and I found there's no a big difference at all.. Just a bigger size and card reader at 5135, if I'm not wrong.. So, will it work??
-
Which trick ? The above by ATG ? Well anything that works with the 5315, should work out with the 4315 as well....
-
DARN YOU bigozone and quilty!!
My friends and co-workers are still amazed at this $348 laptop, a year later. Last year I put $50 in it for 2 gigs of ram, and another $50 for an NEC/Sony/Optiarc dual-layer DVD burner, so it's really a $448 laptop. But now that I finished reading the entire thread, it's like you twisted both arms behind my back, shaming me
into upgrading the processor. I ordered a T8100 last night, and it should arrive within the week.
Seriously, huge thanks to both of you and everyone else who have taken the risk upon yourselves to test processor upgrades for this great bargain of a laptop. I've been reasonably satisfied with its performance in Vista since upgrading to 2 gigs of RAM last year, but with more apps and stupid TSRs (remember DOS?) - uh, I mean 'services' - running, a Core2Duo is almost a necessity.
Thanks again - you guys are the greatest!!Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
/me thinks of 22'' TFT screen for vga-out..ahhh -
Does this cpu upgrade work with a acer extensa 5220 too? This notebook has the samen gl960 chipset. I couldn't find a review on the web about this particular notebook.
-
... XP wants to run faster than this poor T5450 can handle
WHAT CPU is currently installed? and can you see the HEAT PIPE and CPU SOCKET by removing the large access pannel? if so you can physically swap the CPU with any SOCKET P you would like to use.... but the BIOS must have SUPPORT for the CPU you are trying to install... a T7300 should be a good choice but in all honesty i have yet to see an ACER i960 chipset based motherboard that didn't support ALL CORE2DUO CPUS T5250 thru T9500.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Finding a processor won't be a problem. There are lol of sellers in Germany and UK selling a socket P processor. I want a cpu with at least 1,6 ghz. A T5550 or T5670 or higher.
The problem is the bios. I do not know of the bios can identify a core 2 duo cpu. The 5315 has a bios similar like a model with G965 model. I do not know if there is a notebook like a extensa 5220 with g965 chipset, with support for core 2 duo in bios -
Extensa 5220 does come with Santa Rosa platform but I think it comes with GL960 only, the 'low-budget' version of GM965. I think 5315 also comes with GL960, but I'm not sure. What I'm sure is that my 5715 comes with GL960 and I managed to upgrade my T2370 dualcore to core2duo T7500. Which means I'm pretty sure you can upgrade yours with at least T8300..
Keep in mind that I don't own Extensa 5220 so I might be wrong.

The latest BIOS update(v1.35) is new, from july 2008, so I'd say it does support core2duo. Can't be sure though but if I were you I'd go with the upgrade -
I found a German forum. A lot of people with a Extensa 5220 has succesfully upgrade to a core 2 duo socket P cpu. This was possible since bios 1.21. I found a t5550 cpu for just 54 euro. I think i gona buy that.

The T8100 processor arrived Wednesday evening and the faster memory arrived Thursday morning. They're both in the laptop now, and man does this thing fly compared to the Original Celeron 530.
Thanks again, everyone!!! -
I finally received mine and it has a nice new T7500 in, along with 3Gb Ram and a 200Gb hard disk (which I have retained the eRecovery). See my link below for the drive clone thread.

I've also just upgraded my 5315 from Cel m 560 to c2d t7500 with success. I updated bios to 1.43 prior to cpu change. CPU-Z says with t7500 and said with m560 the chipset to be GL960. FSB is 800mhz now. The difference is noticeable.
-
Is upgrading the cpu on the 5920G very different than on the 5315, really wanting to swap cpus between these two (and keep the 5315, even if it has a worse gfx card, no firewire,no hdmi, etc) and while i'm at it, add some good thermal paste to it.
Cant stand the fan starting up and down on the 5315 (even on battery mode)...nice Celeron T1400 and its 60ºC temps :X -
Update: Updating the BIOS fixed the cold boot problem and everything is working great now! THX all!
-
Okay so i have an Acer Aspire 5315:
Celeron M 2.0
3Gbs Ram
Intel X3100 GMA965
Is it worth an upgrade? To those who made it, any performance boost, in games or what so ever? -
Nope not much. Games benefit from GPU upgrades, which cannot be upgraded in the Acer 5315. A CPU upgrade will only improve the fps.
CPU-intensive tasks such as video-encoding, image editing, CAD, etc will benefit from a Core 2 Duo.
A HDD upgrade will provide an overall boost in windows, by improving loading times, and making the system more responsive. -
Like Quake 3, Phantasy Star Online, Morrowing, Neverwinter Nights, etc -
does anyone know were to get hold of acer laptops with no OS installed? if i can't get my laptop back in working order i'll need a new one
. but would like to stick with xp as i hated vista when it came pre installed on my current laptop. must be able to save some cash by doing this?
-
My personal experience:
I had T2370(dual core 1.73Ghz, FSB 533), upgraded to T7500(core2duo 2.2Ghz, FSB800). I have Intel x3100.
Quake 4 was unplayable with T2370 but with T7500 it was playable, actually it was so playable I managed to finish itDon't expect wonders though.
HL2, HL2 E1, HL2 E2, CS:S performance noticeably improved after the CPU upgrade(not much but noticeable).
Never played Morrowind/Neverwinter Nights but I've heard that they demand good GPU...So I guess you won't notice any performance boost for these games.. Although you mean the first editions of these games right? Then yeah maybe you'll have some more performance..
Never heard of Phantasy Star Online sorry -
Yes, i mean the first editions of both Morrowind and Neverwinter Nights.
-
Well I never tested them on my laptop but I guess they'll run ok..
Neverwinter Nights Recommended System Requirements:
System:
PIII 800 or equivalent
RAM:
256 MB
Video Memory:
16 MB -
Yet it runs like crap on my pc :|
Also Phantasy Star Online:
And it runs like crap too :S -
OK I'll try to download a demo right now and try to run it. Will let you know.
Edit: Found Neverwinter Nights Demo, downloading now(10 min remaining).. -
Okay, if it runs in max graphics then a new cpu is a must have for this laptop lol
-
Ok seems to be working fine at 1280x800 but the Video Quality is set to "Fast" by default and I cannot change it...probably a demo limitation?
-
Yeah, probably. I have the full version and it lets me change it
-
You want me to test some other game(s) ?
-
Well, you said that i'd notice some changes in games like HL2:Source. How big of a change? Because at the moment its unplayable :S
-
I finished HL2 HL2 E1 and HL2 E2. Good performance 20-40 fps. With T2370 the performance was pretty poor - something like 10-30FPS but again - "playable".
CS:S 40-60 fps(at 1280x800 with special cfg file)
-
What about Day of Defeat, Quake III? Got any try on those two?
Anyway, sounds way better than what i have at the moment :|
Btw, what settings did you get those fps in HL2? -
DoD - never played it.
Q III - runs fine(not maxed out of course).
HL 2 - don't remember the settings...1280x800, bilinear, HDR - off...something like that. By the way changing the resolution doesn't change the performance..
Edit: O yeah, I almost forgot - using Windows XP -
I play Quake III in everything max in Windows XP and i have little to no fps drops, you should perform better!
-
-
By the way, any thread on how to Dual Boot Vista and XP? :|
-
Yeah no problem
Dual-booting Instructions for every scenario. -
Nice! thanks, been having some problems with that

Does anyone see anything I might have missed or is the incorrect driver version?
I have already updated the bios to 1.43, the memory to 2gb and will update the processor to a t5750 in the next day or so. After I load 64bit Vista, I will attempt to add another 2 gigs of memory but after what I have read, I don't have high hopes of success with that. -
I updated my processor to the t5750 last night and all went well. I updated the Windows Experience Index and the processor score went up to 4.9 and the graphics score went down to 2.0. Why would that happen? Does anyone have any ideas?
-
I have updated my processor to T8100 and an extra 2G ram with no probs.
windows experience index. Processor 5.1 Memory. 4.9 Graphics. 3.1.
I have no idea why? -
I don't know why the graphics score went down but one of my many theories is that the t5750 processor came out after the 1.43 bios was released and isn't completely supported by it. CPU-Z identifies the processor as a t7200. The Acer 7720 laptop I took the processor out of has bios version 1.44 on it. Does anyone know of a utility that I can use to dump the bios on the 7720 so I can try to flash it on to the 5315? Any help will be appreciated. And a link to a 5315 service guide, not a user guide, will also be appreciated.
Thanks -
I figured it out. I loaded bios 1.44 onto the 5315 and it made no difference. I will do a fresh install of Vista Home Basic x64 tomorrow and see if that makes any difference.
-
i am also itching to see how a 64 runs on it, as well as just how much RAM the motherboard handles and whether or not everything can run just as it was. I like some of the acer arcade programs. *grabs popcorn and sits back to watch*
