Hi all first post here :D
Got the 5315 at the end of September as a birthday present. Good little laptop and definetly better than my P3 IBM laptop

The processor as you all know just sucks. Assuming I want to replace the processor (like I want to, when funds permit), will it void my warranty at all? (I probably already have upgrading the RAM ^^)

    Thanks all :)

I've read a couple of posts where people have asked Acer this, and I think the line Acer take is if something goes wrong with the Laptop, as long as you ship it back to them with the original components then it is ok. May be worth phoning them yourself just to get clarification.

bangert is correct, make sure you take the bottom off with care,(don't damage the screws). and if you have to send it too acer  send it back as you received it.
    Good luck
and let us know how you get on with the upgrade.

    Cheers
    Phil :D

    Need Information....
I have Acer 4310 with Celeron M520 and i943GML (only support FSB533 ), I want to replace that proc with T7200 (FSB667), is it impossible ?

Checkout the 3680 sticky for info. The 5315 is a Santa Rosa based notebook and quite different from yours.

(BTW, it is not impossible. You'll have to take a risk and try it out. My 943GML notebook ran the T7600 fine with the latest BIOS.)

Hmm, regarding to my earlier "issue", could someone possibly recommend a cheap processor that would work in my 5315? Doesn't have to be a powerhorse but anything's better than a Celeron :D

Would be happy with the T5450 but just needing confirmation of someone having it working in a Socket 469 mPGA GL960 Chipset 5315...?

EDIT: should I need to this "CPU socket mod" that I've heard about, what is it that needs to be done?

I'm basically in the same situation as Happy Dude.

I have attached a CPU-Z screenshot, if that's any use.

    Laptop is 5315 (obviously) UK.

Merom appears to be, if I researched correctly, Socket M's and P's.

What I am finding, Socket M are NOT pin-compatible with Socket 479.

I don't want to spend £X on a C2D processor, then find out it doesn't work or worse breaks the laptop.

I just want to get that confirmed and someone who can safely say it works, if you understand me.

Yeah, sorry, I missed the socket type. It should be socket P.

For the record, wrong CPU either won't fit or the laptop won't boot. It can't break the laptop. Of course this is my opinion only

    So that's basically a no then. :( I was looking forward to a C2D.

On a side note, I now know that the processor in the acer is a desktop celeron :( .

    I'll live.

    Thanks.

You can upgrade to any Socket P C2D with bus speed of 667MHz and 800MHz. (T9500 being the limit)

And it is not a desktop celeron. CPU-Z just can't recognize your CPU properly. It is a Merom-based Celeron M.

OK I will probably ahead and purchase the CPU then. If it's the wrong CPU then I'll be frustrated.

So IT WILL WORK, EVEN IF CPUz SAYS WRONG!

It has worked for everybody w/GL960 chipset. And Acer Aspire 5315 is Socket P, with only one motherboard made for it.

If you're unsure, do not go for it! That's all I can say.

5315 use the same motherboard, CPU socket and chipset as my 5715Z. The BIOS is the same too. And I successfully upgraded to T7500.
Also, there are tons of successful upgrades reported in this thread and as Andy said, all 5315 have the same motherboard. So it should work for you too.

For the record nobody here will give you a 100% sure answer and take any responsibility! This a free, public forum, and all the help you get is volunteer. So if you're looking for some sort of "guarantee" this isn't the right place. As Andy said, if you're not sure about it, don't do the upgrade.

Yes, I know people can't give a definate answer on forums :) But surely someone out there has a GL960 chipset working with a T5450.

I'll either buy one myself and try or wait till mattyribbo tries. :)

As I said indirectly in my previous post, my laptop has GL960 and I upgraded with a socket P Merom T7500. GL960 is a budget version of GM956, they both are the same chipset but GL960 has some limitation. For example GL960 has 2GB RAM limit...

I upgraded a 5315 with a T5450 after upgrading the BIOS (just in case).

With 3Gb of 667 RAM installed at the same time the system buzzed along very nicely.

My friend has been using it happily for about six months now.

Stupid question I am sorry, I have an Aspire 5315-2326. I have updated the bios to V 1.43 and have upgraded my RAM to 2 gig. I need my processor speed to be at least 2.8Ghz for a work at home position. Can anyone tell me what model number of the CPU processor I should get? I need the most efficiant for the cheapest price

Ask your employer, how would a 2.8GHz help ? :D

Anyway, only the X7900 and X9000 are 2.8GHz, and have not been installed by anyone here in a 5315, and I advise you not to do so. And they are definitely not cheap. About 300-400 bucks on ebay!

would there be a higher speed then that would be suitable? I think the speed thing is crazy too. Here is what the requirements are: 2.8 GHZ Processor (minimum of a Pentium 4 processor or equivalent processor running at a clock speed of 2.8 GHz)

    Hahaha....its Pentium 4. Well, a Core 2 Duo 1.4GHz will be faster than the Pentium 4 3.80GHz. :D
Checkout this guide, and look for Socket P Core 2 Duos.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=209284

Basically, a Core 2 Duo like a T5450, T5750, T7100, etc will be fine. Just make sure it is Socket P and has a FSB of 800MHz or 667MHz.

Anyway thanks for your help people, looks like I'll buy a T5450 or cheaper :p and see how it goes...

    Hello,

I have doubts about sockets and processors here to upgrade my Acer 5135.

My parents bought this as a cheap laptop to browse with Firefox and check email, but I would like to upgrade it to a T7300 and 2 GB of RAM to make it a bit snappier.

Here is the info reported by CPU-Z:

    cpuzceleron530a.png -- cpuzceleron530b.png

I would like to know if I can upgrade the CPU from a Celeron M 530 to a Core 2 Duo T7300, this would be like 50 euros or so.

I ask this because I'm not sure if the chipset/socket is compatible. CPU-Z says "Socket 479 mPGA" and I have seen others with Socket P.

I have upgraded the BIOS to 1.43 a couple of hours ago too.

    Thanks :)

Yes, it should work. T7300 is a Merom socket P C2D CPU so it should work fine. Check pages 92 and 93 of this thread.

when you turn on laptop, hit F2 and you should enter BIOS, and there you can see the current version of BIOS.
also, you can see it with CPU-z, and Acer eSettings...
alternatively, you can download latest version of BIOS and try upgrading it, and it should give you your current version

so i have aspire 5315 and i upgraded the RAM to 2GB few weeks ago and iam thinking of upgrading the CPU too. i found earlier that the RAM must be at a specific speed to keep up with the processor FSB.

CPU-Z show up that it is 2GB DDR2 and the maximum bandwidth is PC2-6400 (400MHz) will this ram work with the t8100 processor or i have to buy new ram?

    I think PC2-6400 is 800mhz, but yes, the T8100 will work; I have 2gb PC2-5300 667mhz, and I have a T7300 with 800mhz FSB, and it works fine.
