Hey there. Do I have to delete Vista before loading XP? Do I put these links to drivers on a disc and load from there? newbie, cantcha tell!

These are the actual drivers from the Restore Backup DVD that you can create in the original system.
I'll be installing XP in the next couple of day's, hoping all goes well.
For those trying to install XP also, as mentioned in another thread, make sure you hit F2 and change to IDE Native. I'll update the info as things go along, wish me well.
Anyway, here's the download: http://rapidshare.com/files/197482818/DRV.rar.html
Update: Would recommend you download "freeheart4sale's" drivers also.
I see that several of the drivers in the backup DVD such as the LAN, Wireless, and Audio drivers are only for Vista, not for XP. Thus, you may not want to use these drivers on XP.
Don't know what the "acer lock" is and why it needs to be removed after XP is installed, but freeheart seems to know more. So, might as well do it.
UPDATE:
Okay, here are the results and process.... IT WAS A FULL SUCCESS!
1. XP Pro Sp3 with slipstreamed updates until Jan 09 (installs as default IE7 and WMP 11)
2. Pressed F2 changed to IDE Native, and made the DVD Drive the Boot drive.
3. Saved pressed F"whatever" to make it boot from the DVD Drive.
4. Deleted all Partitions. Created a single Partition. Do a FULL Format, not Quick.
5. Continued installing XP. XP Finished. Got primarily "freeheart4sale's" drivers ready. (the AMD VGA chip drivers would NOT install???)
6. Ran the "Acer Remove Lunch App".
7. Ran the "ATI South Bridge SM Bus Controller". (of course now restarting after each install)
8. Ran the "ATI WDM graphics card driver".
9. Ran the "Realtek Audio Driver".
10. Ran the "Realtek Lan Driver".
11. Ran the "Atheros Wireless Driver" (apparently according to other's you might need to install one of the others depending on your system???)
12. Ran the "Synaptics Touchpad Driver" (although this likely isn't necessary, the default installed version seems fine, no need to stick in another program)
13. Got my "AutoPatcher" CD (or as most known XP Autopatcher) downloaded the latest a couple of days ago.
14. Ran AutoPatcher, installed all the updates through a couple of day's ago and installed what apps and tweaks I like. Restarted puter, ran AutoPatcher again, to install the stuff that couldn't be installed the first run, such as a few updates which required other things or updates installed first.
15. Installed "OutPost Security Suite Pro 2009", and my Maxthon Classic, and all seems perfectly well.
16. Got a new "GearHead Laser Mouse" nice (had to slow it a notch though).
17. Got a "IoGear 3+1 USB Hub", nice also, cheap and one of it's connections is a camera etc. connection (small USB).
18. Got a "HUC56S External Modem" nice also. All the above were cheap at Fry's Electronics (though the modem was like $29)
Conclusion, have installed everything, and I have a SUPER FAST XP Laptop!!!!
I've never had a laptop run this fast!!! Nice and happy. Hope I don't have any problems with programs I'll stick in, but, I shouldn't. Out of 3GB's of RAM, using only like 1/2 a GB. Whereas when Vista was installed, with all the junk apps still if I'm remembering right I only had like 1 GB left to use, and that's without Outpost installed.
Anyway, this seems to be the best investment I've ever made. And thank you much to "FREEHEART4SALE" and other's input for making this all seemlessly possible.Without you all, this would have been a nightmare I'm sure!

I found some drivers for XP on the eMachine website. Since the 5515 and the eMD620 are the same notebook. hope someone finds this helpful

I just got another one of these things for muyy mother-in-law. (The other one was for a friend of mine). Funny thing is, the wireless link I used worked on his, but not the one I bought for my mother-in-law. Acer must use different wireless cards. Anyway, I tried one of your "optional" links (Foxconn 4312) and it installed the driver, but it does not connect or even show my router in the list where the one I did for my friend word find (with the original driver I posted "Acer-Aspire-5735-Foxconn-Atheros-AR5B91" and I would suspect with your "Atheros AR5007EG" as well). Is there some magical fn key thing I gotta press or something. The wireless card shows in device manager and it says "enabled". Just doesn't show any routers (even my neighbors which also did show on my friends as well as mine). Is it a miniPCI inside? Maybe I can just open it up and replace this (I have a bunch of extra miniPCI wireless cards in my parts drawer). Any other suggestions or advice on what to do about this broadcom foxxcon odball thing? (I wish it had the atheros) -
Anyway, All I did was press F2 during boot screen. Set IDE to native and set the CD rom as first in boot sequence. Next, I put in my XP cd, booted and quickformatted away the nasty Vista. -
hello hoofhearted, not sure why not working, the downloads i have posted with exact are only ones needed, all of the 5515 have the same wireless Atheros AR5007EG built in, if you are installing several diff drivers trying to get it working, the laptop brain(lol!) is probaly getting confused, if you looked in device manager while vista was still on it, you would see both Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter & Realtek RTL8102E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC. i have done over 17 of the 5515's with xp, & no problems yet -
Anyone should be able to follow my install instructions above without a problem.
Oh, and how are you installing on "17" of these??? You like reselling these or something? Great idea if you are, hee hee.
Oh, and any idea on why the VGA chip drivers would not install? Are they necessary? -
This particular one needed the broadcom. If this is anything like the arimas I fooled around with last year, they do actually use different hardware (for things like the harddrive, miniPCI wireless card, memory, etc). I believe this is why they include the different ones on the website. One laptop was bought in Metarie, LA the other in Houma, LA. Metairie had the Atheros, Houma had the Broadcomm. I actually figured out my issue. I believe my issue was that I had to use the little switch on the front to activate the wireless. -
Was your model the 5515- 5879 version....???
Or did you get a different one?
Just wondering if that number designates what's in the machine. -
The one I have now with the Broadcom is 5879 (is actually for my mother-in-law). The other one with the Atheros is in my friends possesion.

From Acers website, they offer 3 different ones for Vista:
WLAN Atheros T77H053 v7.6.0.164
WLAN Foxconn 4312 v4.170.64.5
WLAN Ralink T77H028 v2.0.8.0
Has anyone gotten an Ralink yet? -
Hey there. With the driver files that are zipped to switch from vista to xp, do they have to be unzipped and then stored onto disc prior to install or will the system unzip them and install? I'm assuming I need to unzip them first to access the exe files. Am on i on the right track?
Also, is the AMD64 in these things a 64 bit system? What is the difference with this?
I check with a guy at my work who works on computers and wonders if this computer is running on a 64 bit system. According to him, XP pro won't recognize the 4 megs of ram I have and that I need to load a XP 64 bit os for it to do so. I am planning on loading regular Xp pro and wonder will I be ok with that? Does anyone agree with this guy? -
the aspire 5515 is a 32 bit sysyem, amd64 is just the cpu, has nothing to do with 64 bit -
freeheart4sale, you're the greatest. Thanks!

Found only one bug on this thing so far with XP on it....
Anyone else not able to come out of deep "Hybernate"???
Hit the spacebar and it goes to the login screen (I shouldn't have to login), but it doesn't actually show any login box. It's just stuck there. I have to turn off the computer and restart.
Anyone know how to fix this?
Actually, I'm thinking this might have to do with my Outpost Firewall, cause, I'm remember now coming out of Hybernate worked just fine previous to installing my Outpost. Thought I would check with others though. -
Hello everyone,
This is regarding the issue I saw posted on Vista "hanging" during install. this is prolly not going to work for all applications but it did work for me.
After countless attempts to install Vista with no success, I decided to remove HD from Acer laptop and placed it in another laptop then installed Vista on second laptop using the OEM Key that came with Acer PC. Then replaced the HD into the Acer and it recongized eveything with the exception of a few drivers (ie. network, video etc.)
Just in case anyone is not aware of this, if you are using a "Vista Ultimate" Disk, it will install any version of Vista as long as you use the corresponding OEM key for the version you need to install.
Anyways great help here with all the "other" Acer issues I've had and I hope this helps someone in return.
Peace -
Microsoft has to force Vista down our throats because nobody likes it. They are going to get paid regardless of what the people think.

Thanks, all the information here was aesome it took 2 hours to get rid of vista and put on xp ,it made a huge speed difference ,acer aspire5515 is really a nice laptop! AFTER ALL!!!

Hey Everyone...
I'm hoping that I'm overlooking something basic, but I can't get my video straightened out.
I have one of the WallyWorld Acer Aspire 5515's.
In an effort to avoid all the junk preloaded I wanted to install my stand alone upgrade XP copy, and searched Google for info and found my way here.
I followed along with a previous post (FreeHeart4Sale's advice & Drivers) concerning installing XP.
Everything worked very well and was mostly straight forward, except when I try to install the "Integrated ATI Radeon Xpress 1200 graphics (display drivers exact match)" executable...the install fails and I get A "Severe" error which says:
Setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware or operating system. Setup will now exit."
Am I missing something here?
The "FreeHeart4Sale" supplied driver seems to work fine for everyone else...
I've tried to let windows find it's own online through Device Manager and it doesn't pick up anything either. The VGA video listing in Device Manager has a Yellow "?" indicating a problem.
I'm really happy with this machine and would hate to have to use Vista.
Any help would be very much appreciated...Thanks in Advance.

Update...
These are the only Drivers I've able to get to work:
Radeon Omega Drivers 4.8.442 (Catalyst 7.12)
Found them at this website:

~Hope this helps someone if they have the same problems... -
Why is it sooooo hard to find Vista drivers for this laptop?? I have spent hours surfing the web just to find Vista drivers for an Acer Aspire 5515 laptop which is what it originally had in the first place and all I can find is the XP drivers. Why?
Nevermind after an hour of looking around I found where I needed to go with a little URL hacking. But seriously you people complaining about vista and wanting xp is making vista drivers hard to find because all the google hits point to xp drivers. Get off xp's nuts already and move on! Geesh!
For those of you looking for vista drivers go to acerpanam.com and they have the drivers there. Save you the trouble I had to go through. -
You can go here as well.

2. Most of my software work for XP.
3. Vista is MS latest Windows Millennium. Get the picture? Some things cool, but just not the best at this point.
Aspire 5515 drivers?
