That doesn't sound like very good battery life... How long do you think they computer will last just using Microsoft word and simple Internet browsing? Maybe a few YouTube videos too?
-
From a redditor who's recently received the laptop, it seems as if the cooling system doesn't keep up very well when gaming:

Those upper temperatures after gaming are quite troubling to see. -

Does anybody have an opinion on whether this will comfortably run Rome Total War 2?
In the market for a laptop and that is really the only game i'm interested in playing. -
BTW, looks like this machine is in stock at the Acer store. I just ordered one....we'll see how it bears up with the dust.
-
Does anyone know anything about the "converter port" same dimensions as mini display port? but what is it capable of? can i use it like a minidisplay port? max resolution? Hz? audio? One thing I hate about Acer is they don't explain their products and techniques well. -
Can one only get the nvidia 720 in the USA.... Not the 750?
-
Check the link in the first post of this thread. That should offer up the 750 version in the US.
FYI for folks that don't know, I was checking the online Microsoft store last night and it looks like they carry the 720 version, if you want that one.
I'm really on the fence about ordering the 750 version right now or waiting to see what else comes out the next couple of months. I want to be able to play the new Total War game, even if it's just on low-medium settings, but reading through. it seems there are concerns about the processor handling it.
Want: a full HD IPS touchscreen, dedicated graphics card in a 15.6" or below package <1500$. Almost got the HP Envy Touchsmart with the Haswell and 740, but really wasn't impressed by the screen and build quality in store. Any other options I should be looking at? -
I think the 720 is 50 better only than intel graphics. Nice but not worth it. 750m and ddr5 lets u play crysis 3 at 720p on high
The USA 750 is 14 inch only!!!! Crazy -
I7 really needed?

Decided to buy this laptop tonight when I got home from work, but it has disappeared from the website. I was looking at it at work, get home a few hours later and it is gone, this sucks.
Anyway, does anyone know whether the Intel 4500U, since it is a low power CPU will have trouble playing games? -
-
-
I've just read about this, I think is just what I'm looking for, but I can't find any reviews. I wanna see how the screen performs, it's an IPS right?
-
Did you get the 750m 14"
Or 15.6"
With the Crapofied(tm) 720m?
I don't understand why acer USA is putting this horrible gpu in the larger mode (15.6")l. Shame -
I ordered one over the weekend to finally replace my dutiful 3820tg. -
-
How has the battery life been? Is there a weight on the 14" one???
-
-
-
OK, I just got a tracking number--looks like it shipped this afternoon.
-
just ordered it an hour ago w/ priority shipping. was between this or holding out for the 14 inch gigabyte (p34g) or upspending for the razer or going with the MBP 15 retina and throwing windows on there. theyre all around 4.1-4.4 lbs and .8inches high so it was really a matter of specs. obviously we're working with limited info here but i need a new laptop asap so i pulled the trigger. i'll keep you all updated. might return it if battery life or heat turn out to be garbage. if anybody else receives one and decides to go all SSD, please let me know how you did that w/o f ing up the cache system.
anyways, my analysis:
pros of v7: touchscreen, awesome panel w/1080p and great angles, pretty solid card (750) should be able to play most games on medium or high at 768, actual company i have heard of and that wont look stupid on my desk at work, 12gb of ram (why, idk), haswell
cons of v7: low voltage processor, unknown battery life, HDD (with SSD cache) - i'll probably replace this bringing total to 1500+tax. if i do it will be perfect.
gigabyte: pro: better card, better processor?, haswell, obviously for gaming so probably will cool better than the acer
con: not available, probably will overheat on my lap, no touchscreen, bad viewing angles on screen apparently, crappy battery life, unknown servicing
razer: pro: best card/build, haswell, obviously for gaming, better power adapter
con: would be 2 grand for a 256gb ssd, no 1080p, no decent screen, no touch, probably overheat on lap, logo is weird in a professional workplace. but honestly if there was a 1080p touchscreen on this i would have grabbed it.
mbp: pro:best built, weighs the least for the screen size, amazing screen, better power adapter
con: no haswell, should be a 765m for that size, no touchscreen, windows + 256gb would run 2200+, kind of large (why get a 15 inch 750m computer when i can spend 1k less for a haswell 14 inch touchscreen 750m computer?) -
-
All you have to do is go to INTEL Rapid Storage Technology program and disable the cache. If you don't do this it could mess your machine up.
Then just take the msata out and put the new one in and install OS to it.
Also, I got my tracking number and should receive it Wednesday. Everyone can except a mild review this weekend and a bigger one in like 3 weeks.
BTW We are in the exact same boat. I was considering this, gigabyte, razer, and MBP:R, -
The most important thing is to do it on regular basis- if a lot of dust gets wedged there even gas-duster won't unsettle it but if done often it's gonna prevent a build up. -
So we have three users (seandamiller, antisthenes, egmont) getting their hands on this laptop very shortly. Looking forward to hear your input. I have been waiting for nice 14inch, IPS, 1080p laptop for over an year now. Not a gamer here. Recently heard Lenovo coming up with 14inch IPS 1080p as well (T440s). But Lenovo's tend to be very expensive. I priced x1carbon touch with close to the specs (not similar) as V7-482pg and price crosses 2k.
Can you guys tell us where this laptop being shipped from? Wish I could find it in a local store to get a feel.... -
Going to (hopefully) be receiving this laptop on Wednesday (the slightly weaker Canadian version). Will probably be able to install a few games (Bioshock Infinite, League of Legends, Borderlands 2) this weekend to test it out. Do you guys think that lowering the maximum multiplier on the processor or undervolting the GPU will help with the supposed heat issue?
-
How would I move the OS? I assume that this needs to be done before installing programs, etc... If I run it off a 128gb msata ssd, is it worth it? That's like a 100 bucks. Wouldn't it run slower than a standard ssd... I could get a 256 for 200ish... If I do get the crucial m4, is it better to use it for just the os or to use it as a cache with RST?
-
I was really interested in one of the new Lenovos too (T440s or U430) but it's impossible to figure out what their availability is. It would sure be nice to have that great keyboard, though. Ultimately the fact that I could actually buy an Acer is what pushed me into pulling the trigger. It's ridiculous--Apple announces a product and you can buy it right away, PC manufacturers pitch something at a trade show and you can't even tell if it will be available 6 months down the line, or in your region at all. -
Hey everyone, I just made an account to participate in this thread. I just ordered the laptop, and also purchased a Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSD for ~$450 on Amazon. Expensive, but I'm looking forward to replacing it and I'll report on performance/battery life/etc I ordered 2day shipping so they should be in soon.

Triple Your Speed: How to Install an mSATA SSD Boot Drive in Your Laptop -
So i ordered my Acer monday around 11am, and got it today, at noon! Paid for Priority shipping. I love it so far. Amazing screen, this is why I did not get the Razer, the MSI, etc. The Gigabyte was more than I needed, Acer got it right with this laptop. Plus I had an Acer before and really liked it.
I do not know if the 19 volts on the charger is what this laptop outputs, but using that number, 3560mah X 19v / 1000 equals 67.64, or basically 67 watt hours, plus this laptop is Li-po which last longer than regular Lith-ion
Assuming 67 whr, and 10watts per hour under normal usage, should give 6 hours battery life in real world use. Not great, but not bad. Everyone would have loved a 90whr battery, but then acer would not have had space for speakers.
Ok for some negatives, the keyboard keys are really really shallow, I do not like this keyboard, but it is not horrible, it is livable. I mean a thinkpad keyboard would not fit in this machine so we have to live with it.
It does not get hot, the fan does not run, not that I can tell under normal use. If I put my head right by the exhaust I can hear it, and feel a little warm air. Also very weird, most laptops have the cpu on the left side, this one must have it on the right, because that is where the heat is coming from, no fan or heat from the left side yet. I have not done anything yet, to get the Nvidia card to come on.
Bad news, it does get hot very quick when you start to push it, I was playing youtube vids, transferring files, deleting things, setting thing up, I was not playing games though, and it started to get hot. But what can you expect this thing is as thin as my pinky, and made of plastic, the heat has to be there. But it has not gotten loud and hot enough for me to worry, let me play civ 5 and xcom and see if it gets bad.
Bad news, the freaking power button sucks, I have hit it on accident 5 times now, it is right where I want my hand to be, when I am moving the thing.
Oddities. Every time I put it to sleep, or shut it down, when I wake it up, or turn it on, the keybaord light comes on, hopefully I can find a way to make it be off by default. Another issue, I told it to not need a password on wake up, but it keeps asking for a password.
Anyway that is my 8 hours of use review. -
I am planning on getting a lite on plextor ssd
Amazon.com: Lite On Plextor M5M 0.85-Inch 256GB mSATA Solid State Drive (M5M 256GB): Computers & Accessories
Read a good review. Going to make a backup usb, take out the hdd, and install the ssd and hope the factory recovery works. -
-
Not sure, I plan on taking out the HDD, then putting in the SSD, and going from there, if it does not work, I will put the HDD back in and look up some other option. I am assuming that the USB Flash back-up will be able to get the system running...then again, I did have trouble with a Dell, that had the Windows separate from the Drivers, I guess I better load up another USB with important drivers.
Also this is so annoying, the two finger scrolling is backwards, I have been through the settings and cannot find how to fix this.
Super good news though, two finger clicking opens up the left click menu, like in Macs, I love this feature. -
No worry about drivers, Acer Back Up Utility allows for the use of a USB for WIndows back up, and another USB for the Drivers, should be able to install the ssd, and use the 2 USB drives to get it running.
-
Ok so I ordered yesterday morning and it is coming today (priority shipping). also ordered a 256gb msata ssd, with same day shipping. going to turn off the RST and move windows over over to the mSATA drive asap. i imagine that using the HDD less should help w/ battery a bit but who knows. at least this thing will be blazing fast.
so overall i got a 4.4lb, 14 inch ICS touchscreen notebook with a haswell i7 and nvidia 750m and 12gb ram and 256ssd (msata) and 1tb harddrive for 1500 excluding taxes, all within 1 day of ordering it. pretty awesome situation if you ask me. i'm just hoping this all doesnt result in insane overheating.
i will report back saturday with pics and once i find time to get it up and running. obviously im not psyched about buying a 1500 dollar laptop and immediately taking it apart but whatever.
and thank you to the person above who provided the link on switching the OS over to msata. -
mod can delete this.
-
Has anyone confirmed what sata level the msata port is?
-
Recieved the Aspire v7 today. Will do a review this weekend but my initial thoughts and feelings:
Pros:
Amazing screen. Worship it!
Amazing speakers. Super loud (pretty good sound quality, very little distortion even though they face down)
Cons:
tiest touchpad evar. Software is mediocre and scrolling works alright (not perfect) but just the texture. yuck. plastic-y texture makes ever time you touch it unenjoyable.(more probs for the beautiful touchscreen)
Keyboard: so close acer! great actuation pressure, just not enough travel( super shallow). 1 more millimeter of travel and I would love it. Also the weird (to me) layout. I'm used to media buttons that dont need Fn to be pressed to activate. very annoying, i thought by 2013 companies would realize that a Fn toggle or default Media keys would be the way to go.
Other: Changing Msata ssd seems to be a hassle. There is no simple Intel utility. I put my 128gb msata and it doesnt register. going to keep messing with that. Maybe it has to do with the Amps? my msata ssd is 1.25A while the default 24gb one is only 0.6A (if it doesnt support my Higher amp Msata, i will cry)
Button on the side. Not to much of a problem. I just disable it in settings. But why? what do i gain from side button? very curious what goes through acer designer's heads. -
Looking forward to a full review.
The touchpad is disappointing, though between a mouse and touchscreen, I imagine I can work around it. The keyboard sounds frustrating though. Still, this is the most balanced option I can see from what I've looked at, assuming the build quality stands up. -

OS Install on mSATA ( I got following from multiple threads from DELL & Lenovo. Thanks Y'all).
Please let me know if I missed some steps.
1) Launch Intel RST UI from system tray.
2) Select Accelerate Tab, click Disable acceleration.
3) Click Reset to available to reset volume.
4) Restart the system.
5) Enter BIOS. Click Advanced tab, and then under Sata Operation, make sure it's set to "AHCI". Change it to that mode if it's not. Now save/exit the BIOS and turn off your system.
Install your new mSATA and it should show up as an unpartitioned drive which the OS can be installed on
If the SSD still wont showup as a drive
1) Look for program expresscache (by Diskeeper) was installed
2) uninstall it or turn off and disable its service
3) install your mSata and reboot, you will get a message asking you to Initialize it and then format.
Install your new mSATA and it should show up as an unpartitioned drive which the OS can be installed on
If you cant see the mSATA in Bios under boot order priority
1. Disable "Rapid Start Technology" in the advanced screen of the BIOS.
2. Go to Boot tab and change Boot List Option to "Legacy"
3. Disable Secure Boot
The list of devices now should show your mSATA. -
Hmm... subpar touchpad is a slight concern.... Keep us updated on this as you continue to use it.
-
Has anyone ordered the Canadian version? On the acer website it says it has a 750M but on many of the websites where you can order it, a graphics card is not mentions. I just wanted to confirm that the v7 482PG-6662 does indeed have a 750M.
-
I got mine yesterday. I also ordered a 256gb msata drive that I plan to install tomorrow (using the clean wipe-recovery method), so I haven't done anything major like installing Steam games. A few random thoughts:
1. Yes, the touchpad is quite mediocre, but this is my first touchscreen laptop and I have to say that having the touchscreen available makes the touchpad radically less important. I certainly wouldn't rely on the touchpad for gaming, but I don't feel the need to use an external mouse at all times anymore.
2. Yes, the key travel on the keyboard is very shallow (more shallow than most chiclet keyboards). I do find this a little weird, but not bad per se: what it loses in satisfying "clackiness" it makes up for in quietness. I haven't done any rigorous testing or anything, but subjectively I feel like my speed and accuracy is higher on this keyboard than on my slightly different previous one (a Samsung).
3. The screen really is amazing--there's no arguing with IPS, and the brightness is great. I just hope Windows 8.1 resolves the really ugly and annoying font scaling issues.
4. My last Acer was a Timeline 3810t, and the build quality of this machine is so far beyond that one it's practically a different company. I have noticed a couple of defects--a tiny out-of-place bump in the touch pad, some light bleed on the LCD--but by and large this is one impressively solid computer. The soft-touch plastic on the bottom is an especially nice touch. All in all I have to say that this computer is more pleasant to hold, open, and use than either of my previous two--the Vaio Z12 and the Samsung Series 7. Annoyingly, there are no hard drive or caps lock LEDs.
5. It hasn't gotten hot unless I block the vents, although I haven't been doing too much serious file transfer.
6. The rear ports--especially the only USB3 port--are mildly annoying but they should not be dealbreakers. In case you were concerned, putting a USB stick into the rear USB port does not prevent the screen from tilting back normally.
All in all, I plan to keep it as of now, not that 24 hours is all that much time to make a decision..
Also, does anyone know how to get into the BIOS on this machine? Pressing F12 just takes you to a menu listing "Windows Boot Manager" and no other options. -
Press Del or F2 immediately after powering on.
-
Go to advanced startup or advanced boot menu option in windows 8 to get the laptop to restart into the BIOS. Also the lack of capslock LED is dumb. how do these laptops pass inspections like no indicator if caps is on. Also, I type very accurate with this keyboard. I just wish it was deeper. the keyboard is fine enough. I finally got my Msata ssd to register. Now I just have to move the OS over.
-
This BIOS doesn't have an advanced menu that I can access, and it's probably too early for a mod to be released--seandamiller, how did you get your drive to work? Did you manage to reach those settings somehow?
