Well, that's where the heat gets vented. Fans are along the margin above it, left and right.

    It's a function, not a defect.

Does anybody know how to replace the keyboard. I removed even the motherboard and sadly learned that it is from the front. But not sure how to remove the front panel without scratching or any other damage. Any help will greatly be appreciated.

Hey all. I was one of the first to get this machine and comment in this forum and I finally came across my first big issue with this computer. well, not the computer it self but with windows 8. i got the blue screen after rebooting telling me the boot config file was corrupted... blah blah $^#$*&^. cant boot window. blah blah... I am in the process of backing up my files but as im thinking i may use this opportunity to jump the specs of the 24gb cached msata pcie ssd to a 500gb msata pcie ssd boot drive. I was hoping if there was anyone here who has done this yet or also anyone who has been successful dual booting windows 8 and ubuntu or any other linux distro? windows is dead to me until acer can send me the recovery usb(personal reasons i cant get it until december) but for gaming and adobe suite i will eventually need to dual boot. thoughts suggestions comments. thanks all

Hey guys. Awesome thread. Truly learned a lot.

    My question:
I have a spare 256gb 2.5" SATA SSD lying around. Can I just take out the 20gb msata and the 1tb hdd and just pop in my 256GB SSD? I guess what I'm asking is does the OS Need to be on the msata drive or can I forego the msata drive and not use one at all and only use the 256gb 2.5" SSD?

Just take out the Regular HDD, leave the msata alone, use the spare 256GB ssd an the main and boot drive. Use the tiny msata drive for extra storage 20GB is a lot of pictures, music, etc. There is no OS in your msata drive now, the msata drive just has files to help the laptop to be faster, including to boot faster.

I am sure you already know, but acer has a recovery program built into this laptop, just have two usb drivers ready, one 32gb or greater, to back up the os, and another of any size, to back up the programs and drivers, but you do not really need this one, you can download the drivers on your own and get more of a "clean install" by not reinstalling all of the programs that came with the laptop. Put in the new ssd, plug in the usb drive, and reinstall the OS, you should be good to go. Also check out this website for ssd optimaization,

Anyone know if there are any pluses or minuses to replacing the mSata vs replacing HDD with SSD? I was leaning toward doing Samsung 840 Evo SSD since I don't need 1tb of space and figured the SSD would improve battery vs HDD.
Plus the mSata are around if not more than SSD with same size. Any help or comments ?

The plus for msata in smaller ultrabooks, is it is so small, and they can get rid of the old fashioned and relatively large traditional hdd. For this laptop, you can keep the 1tb hdd and get a fast msata ssd, so you get speed and tons of space. The sizes and speeds of ssd vs msata are about the same. If msata was a lot cheaper, obviously get msata, if 2.5 inch ssd was cheaper, obviously get that. Right now there is not much real difference, but the 256GB Samsung 840 Evo is about $175. The Plextor 256 msata is $199. Not much difference, but the Samsung is a little cheaper.

I will eventually get a Samsung 840 Evo, then later also get an msata. Also get an external hdd case, to use the 1tb as back-up.

PX-M5M ; Sequential mode performance of up to 540MB/s read and up to 430MB/s write
Samsung SSD 840EVO: Sequential Read: Max. 540 MB/s Sequential Write Max. 520 MB/s

Does the Laptop have any limitations? Meaning would I ever notice the difference between the 2 (SSD vs mSata since Samsung is slightly faster)?
What is reliability of mSata? I have 2 SSD in different computers, one Plextor and one Intel and rock solid for couple years now.
Also I went into Bios, did not see where I can boot from mSata, the current 20g Kingston was not an option? Read someone say their is advanced options but I don't see any.

There are no limitations in the laptop when choosing between the 2.5 ssd or the msata ssd. The Plextor is known for being very reliable, and I am not sure but I believe it is 2 way MLC. Where as the Samsung Evo Is 3 way MLC. Which means the Samsung in theory will deteriorate faster. Of course the Samsung also has 1gb of SLC, and these days I think all SSD's are rock solid and should last you 20+ years.
I am not sure about setting up bios for the msata, I know you need to turn off the cacheing system before you can use an msata to boot, that is probably why you are not seeing it in bios, delete the cache software, and install a bigger msata and I think it will show up. If not read the ssd guide I linked up before.

I just opened it up. As far as I can tell the keyboard is not user replaceable. There's not any apparent way to get the keyboard out without popping a million little plastic connectors. Has anyone had any luck replacing their keyboard?

I scoured the internet for a disassembly guide with no luck. My guess is that if it is replaceable it would actually be from the front... removing the housing that surrounds the keyboard and the touchpad.... but I'm not that adventurous without documented confirmation. I just ended up downloading and using SharpKeys to remap the key next to L-Shift to L-shift and the key to the left of Enter to Enter and it works like a charm.

If you remap both of those keys, what do you use for "\" or "|"?

I'm not suggesting this as a standard, but I actually remap the enter key for "\" and "|." It is what works best for my muscle memory-- everything is where my fingers think it ought to be.

    Update on screen issues:
The stuck pixel is still stuck. I think that the green and blue sub pixels may be dead. Additionally there is some sort of a grey artifact in the upper left quadrant of the screen. It is more than a few pixeles and is not visible at sharp viewing angles (more than 45 deg). It seems almost like a smudge of oil (it is not defined by sharp edges like pixels) but it is behind the glass panel. A few pixels over is a single pixel that is grey too.
I have a feeling that I just got unlucky with my screen and perhaps there is dust behind it causing problems. I called acer and they said it was under warenty but I have to ship it to them and it will take 7 days. I'm at college and I don't have a backup so I'll probably wait until winter break to see what they can do. Any ideas about what the grey area might be?

Hey, I'm considering this laptop. Anyone know if it is already available in europe? Can't find it in the UK.
Also, how bad is the screen flex?

Ah, thanks. How about keyboard? Would you say it has enough key travel?

Noticed any sluggish software? like lightroom or smooth video player (for interpolation)? I'm kind of worried about the two cores. Is it possible to undervolt?
I've seen not all regions have the GT750, does that include europe? Can't find it anywhere, don't even know if it's been released here.

I'm sorry for all the questions, I just can't find much info online. Thanks!

The keyboard has decent travel, and is good once you get used to it. But it is not amazing like my old Thinkpad. For everyday use it is fine. If you are a writer, I would suggest getting an external keyboard. Not that there are going to be many writers using this laptop. It has though much more key travel than the usual ultrabooks.

It is very fast, the only issue you will have is with the HDD, not the CPU or GPU. I do not undervolt or overclock myself. I use Lightroom it is very fast, then again I was using LR4 with my last laptop and it was ok speed wise, I am using LR5 now and it is very quick. So I do not know if it is the new laptop, or if LR5 is that much faster. The two laptops had about the same scores cpu wise. My last laptop was a Dell with last years core i5 and 8 gb or ram.

I do not know anything about other countries and the availability of the laptop. I got mine from Acer USA, the website, with the core i7, 12gb ram, and nvidia gt750M.

I also using a first generation i5 CPU laptop with a old dedicated gpu. ,dell studio 1558

And I just got LR5 and its slow and makes the fan run, but still usable with my config , what I would like to know is if the new I5 with gt720M would be a big different compare to my old one , probably it would be, since I prefer the 15 inch model, from Acer .

But did you try LR 4 also, because LR5 is way faster that LR4, but I have not tried both on the same laptop. Anyway, If you are going from a 1st gen Intel Core I5 to a 4th Gen Intel Core I5, it will be a significant jump. I went from a 3rd gen I5 to a 4th Gen i7 ULV and this I7 actually benchmarks higher, even though it uses "half the power."
i have had every generation core i cpu, and every year I am impressed that my new computer is actually faster. And the Nvidia GT720M is ok, it is a little stronger than the Intel HD4400 that you will get, but I was impressed with last years HD4000. I play CIV 5, Xcom, and Torchlight 2, oh and Sims 3. Sims 3 is the hardest to run, but my GT750M has no trouble. If you run simple games like I do, you will have no trouble with the GT720M. If you like 15 inch screens, I would get the Acer, the specs are good enough for 99% of people. I wanted a 14 inch and a full hd screen so I got the 14 inch. I have had 11.6, 14, 15.6, 17.3 inch screens, and I have found 14 inch to the best for me.

Hi thanks for your fast response

Yes I been using a dell studio 1558 since 2010 its time to upgrade so I find this Acer with the bigger 15 inch screen the price is really good what it has to offer compare to dell new 7000 inspiron which is would be $1200 with 1080 screen but no dedicated GPU even if its the GT720M better than just the HD 4400, I'm not a gamer so I think the I5 would be enough the other reason I like to go with the I5 CPU power consumption I like to have the best battery life if possible but I can't sacrifice the screen resolution I can't go back to a low res screen .

I just got LR5 I never used it before its really cool what you can do with raw images .
Yes this Acer seems very popular especially the 14 inch one .

    Thanks !

Never go back to a low res screen, the main reason I kept upgrading every year, was because I was not happy with my screen. 1080 is what I need, any lower and I am not happy. But I also do not see the need for higher than 1080, unless your job is photo editing.

I do not know of anyone ever thinking about this. I will give my best guess based on my use. I let the battery drop to about 15-20 percent before I plug it in, if I keep using the laptop it will take at least 3.5 to 4 hours to fully charge. If I turn it off, which I often do, it will charge up in about 2 hours.

Thomas the reason I ask because my dell charges very fast even if I use it just browsing the net. It has a 90W charger but my girlfriend laptop has a smaller charger and its charges very slow when she using it . but the Acer comes with a 90W one so should be ok.
Sometimes if the charger is small can't keep up with the laptop but this is not the case.

    Thanks for your reply!

Hello everyone, I am thinking of returning my Asus Q501La and get this instead or the N550jv. Would it be a good idea to purchase from Amazon for $980? I think the shipping is faster and I trust Amazon. But the model has no reviews and I'm not even sure if its the correct laptop that everyone's talking abo

I think the green are older, the grey newer. Or maybe the grey are for ultrabooks. Either way, I take all of my stickers off, so I do not remember which sticker I had.

i just got my 15' version I5 cpu with the gt720m and the sticker is a grey color, first impressions are good i was debating over the new dell inspiron 7000 but when i checked out at best buy i did not like the keyboard flex end the keyboard color (silver) is makes it hard to see it,and the acer is lighter i did not want to buy a heavy laptop the dell is 5.7 lbs with all aluminium casing little more robust with the added weight, on the positive side the acer has the 20gig ssd and the GT720M better than just the HD 4400 in dell, i dont game so dont matter much to me , i noticed the screen brightness level has a huge impact on battery life obviously.is there a way to disable the touch screen maybe to save some more battery ?
i dont use the touch screen anyway.
The speakers are awesome i like the fact i can turn of the dolby surround option.

    thanks :)

Hey proofy, I am getting my Acer in about 3 days. I wanted to ask if you needed to remove the 24GB Cache Drive cos im also installing a Samsung 830 Pro in the Acer when it gets here. The SSD is in my current Mac so dont see the need to buy an mSata for more money.

So would i need to remove the Cache 24GB Kingston mSATA and what required BIOS settings should I be wary about? (AHCI and Legacy issues)? I plan to switch out the HDD for the SSD as soon as i get it as I would get updated drivers from the Acer website and get rid of all bloatware bundled.

    Thanks

Hey eveyone, I can't seem to make a decision between the Acer V7, the Asus N550jv, and the Lenovo Y510p/y410p. I'm not going to be playing every game on high settings, so a GT 750m DDR3 will be more than enough. However my major concern about these machines are not the specs since they are pretty similar (all have 1080p except for y410p), but with the reported issues. I'll talk about the acer since I am most interested in that model.

    1) Please, please, can someone describe the cooling of this laptop? I read somewhere this laptop has set the record for the highest temperature with 126 degrees Celcius. Holy crap, it would melt the plastic at this point! I heard that even on idle, the temps are unstably high.

    2) With that said, how noisy is the fan? I want to bring this to the library, but I don't want my laptop to sound like the a/c lol.

    3) Battery life? At least 5 hours with wifi and web surfing?

    4)Build quality?

If you guys could answer at least one question, especially the first one, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you all!

Anyone have bad performance after the 8.1 upgrade? Since upgrading, it now takes about 45 seconds from typing in my password, to getting the desktop. Boot itself seems quite a bit longer too.

I'm wondering if I should do a factory restore, and try again. Very odd.

1)When the nVidia card is on it does get hot just below the screen where the processor and graphics are located. I never have felt that it was overheating and I cannot feel any warmth if it is not gaming I do have it propped up one inch so that air can go underneath but I don't have a cooling pad. There are passive vents on the bottom and two fans on the back. There is a metal bar connecting the processor and gpu so that the fans can cool more effectively.
2)When the graphics are on it can get a little noisy but when you are using the web it is silent. I use it in the library all the time and have no problems at all.
3)Yes. I can easily get 5 hours of web, including video. With much lighter usage or without WiFi it will go 7 hours. (I added a 256GB mSATA boot drive, I'm pretty sure HDs don't use much power but in case)
    4) Very good. I thought that it was made from aluminum but apparently it is high density plastic. The hinge is good and the laptop feels sturdy overall.

I had a watermark saying secure boot wasn't configured but the boot times are the same for me.

My computer seems faster after 8.1
I hit the power button, and the log in page is up in about 10-15 seconds. Type in my password in 2 seconds. Hit the desktop in 1 second, laptop is pretty much ready to go.

It is a little weird, sometimes I hit the power button, and the light on the top left of the laptop turns on instantly and I know that laptop is booting up. But sometimes I hit the power button and the light takes 5-6 seconds to turn on. This lead to me to ask (a long time ago in this thread) if anyone had any issues with their power button. I do not know why the light take a few seconds to turn on, but I thought I had a defect for awhile there and was hitting the power button several times.

The cooling is good, max temp I have hit is ~86C playing a pretty demanding game. I play Torchlight 2 and it does not go above 65C. At 126C the cpu itself would burn up, these cpus shut down at 100C. 126F is about 52C which is what the laptop is at with normal web use.
    2) With that said, how noisy is the fan? I want to bring this to the library, but I don't want my laptop to sound like the a/c lol.

This laptop is very quiet unless you play games. Put it into Power Saving mode, and the fans will be disabled this has been normal for years on my intel/windows laptops. And by the way power saver is fast enough for 99% of people. I run PS all the time, unless I am getting a poor wifi signal then I use Balanced. I only use Max Performance when gaming, and sometime not even then, like with Torchlight 2.

    3) Battery life? At least 5 hours with wifi and web surfing?

With Power Saver definitely. With Balanced most likely, just keep the youtube videos down.

    4)Build quality?

Great, not amazing, not like a rock, not all metal, not like my GF brand new Macbook Pro Retina. But it is good enough. For instance with mine sitting on a flat table the right hand side is up a little, I can push the right hand side down. Then again maybe the table is not perfectly flat. And build quality to me always sucks with a regular hdd, too much motion and you can ruin the hdd. I will get an ssd sooner or later.
