I would like to know if there would be any problem downgarding from vista to xp on the acer aspire 6920g.it was bought for me in austria and is in german but since its vista home premium there's no way i can change the language like on visat ultimate.I searched around the site and other places but can't seem to find any drivers for xp for this specific laptop(dnt really know if there is any)so my question is would there be any problem cause i dnt want a situation where i downgrade and i have problems with drivers. thankx

you'll need to install drivers on a chipset basis not a model basis when jumping from vista to xp.

    Hope that makes sense.

you will also need all the device drivers for the new OS... such as Video driver, sound driver,, network adapter drivers,, modem driver... those are OS specific....

but SSX4life is also correct that you will need CHIPSET drivers... once again they are often OS dependent though... check www.intel.com search for your chipset "downloads"

for example, "965 chipset drivers" that should link you to the drivers for your chipset

you may also want to check out this site,, while it's not for your model,, it will cover the "STEPS" you need to go thru to downgrade your OS.... the site also has a good description of how to SlipStream the SATA drivers into your XP disk.... you will need to do this (don't change to IDE mode in the BIOS... more trouble to change back)

Also not to throw an entire wrench in the mix, but an inexperienced user installing xp over vista on a box that requires sata drivers is going to be hell in a hand basket (no offense).

I've been working with pc's over 20 years and it still took me a few tries to get the correct sata hdd drivers to load prior to the xp setup utility screen (F6).

If you are daring go for it, if you aren't go download acronis first www.acronis.com and make a 1:1 image of your pc before you do what ever to it. That way you can blow it up, wreck it, make it completely inoperable and still recover you OS like nothing ever happened. Consider Acronis a safety net you don't want to be without, especially when venturing into uncharted territory.

very good advice by SSX4life.. backup is essential...

but the link i posted above is a bullet proof SATA solution... i had success first time by just following the instructions for CD + INTERNET method..

thats why post that link so much... it's very informative...

    later,

either lead the charge to find drivers... meaning you will have to do a lot of searching and testing of different drivers to find some that are compatible,, or wait a month or two,, by then i'm pretty sure there will be a good source of drivers (from different models) that have been tested and work....

i'd just wait unless you are highly motivated and very technically inclined like a PC tech or something....

Just spend some money and upgrade to vista ultimate.

You can upgrade with in Windows Vista. No new installation is needed you just enter a vista ultimate serial number.

Nlite does work... agreed. But even then it is trial and error unless you have a known proven set of drivers for the hardware.

That and the latest 945 chipsets are all but flaky on the sata drivers and xp.

    /shrug

oh.. and stop promoting vista like it's the best thing ever. Thanks

The problem is the new devices are coming with little XP support. Another problem is getting support from Acer on your machine if you don't get the OS from Acer. I once had that issue when I upgraded an OS with a version I bought at Best Buy and because I didn't buy from Gateway they said MS had to support it. I bet if you try to find your graphics card driver for XP they laugh.

yeah,, they'll laugh... but the graphics is easy to find...

    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/

they have all the good video drivers

your trouble will arise with the netowrk adapters, sound (install sound driver first),, ect.... those will have to be found thru trial and error most likely

Man check the other link! Why do you think I posted two links? I made a step-by-step explanation in the first one in case you're not familiar with laptop gpus and driver only in the second if you know how to install it.....

    From the first link:

    1. Download driver from here.
    2. Run the driver. (Now the driver extract iself in C:\ATI directory)
    3. When extracting process is over and you get to the point when ATI says "Setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware and operating system, setup will now exit" go to C:\ and create a new folder. DO NOT PRESS OK IN THE SETUP!!!. Name the folder 123.
    4. Copy the ATI folder(should be in C:\) to C:\123
    5. Now click OK and close the ATI's SETUP.
    6. Now follow the guide.

    7. You already did step 1 from the guide (you have the driver extracted in C:\123\ATI)
    8. Skip step 2 and go to step 3
    9. In step 4 when you get to the part to use HAVE DISK go to "C:\123\ATI\SUPPORT\8-9_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_68898\Driver\XP_INF "
    10. Follow the guide to the end.

This should do the trick. I HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS WILL WORK! But it should... :)

If the above doesn't work for you try OmegaDrivers. Apparently they do a modded ATI drivers for laptops..but their newest driver is from 08/01/2008.

I don't know your laptop specs. Check your specs and what is currently missing from your specs...that's the one. Or..Check this menu where "Device Instanse Id" is..find "Manufacturer" and tell me what it says.

OR open all in Device manager to see ALL your devices(I mean click on every "+") and post a screenshot.

OK I can't find CineDash drivers for Xp anyware but someone said that if you want to use CineDash you have to install the Launch Manager.

By the way is your laptop supposed to have a fingerprint reader? If yes, this could be the missing device. You can get the driver from here.

Here's a note to people who are going from pre-installed Vista to XP:

First boot up Vista and check the device manager for names of installed hardware inside the laptop, then search for XP equivalent drivers via google or directly on the manufacturers websites (names/number should be in Vista device manager which will ease up your search for XP driver versions) and download them on a different partition other than 'C' or to the USB drive.

Chipset can be ascertained (most of the time) via CPU-Z among other programs.

    :)

It's a extractable archive. You run the exe the files extract in the location you choose, then you go there and start setup.exe
