the worst thing that could happen could be fixed by reinstalling the default ati drivers.
-
Or system restore. Unfortunatly the default ati drivers on mine are 8.241.0. The latest i've seen on acers website were the Euro ATI drivers. Those are labeled 8.231. Go figure :-( I'm going to try the ATI mobile catalyst one more time today. Right now i.m working on some benchmarks to see a difference. I'll post some #'s later.
-
Standard ATI Acer Drivers (8.241)
3D MARK05 2845
3D MARK03 4839
Company of heroes (automatic settings)
avg fps: 8.9
Max fps: 46.0
Min fps: 3.0
*That looks horrible, but the automatic settings are taylored to a desktop X1600 which is wayyy better then the Acer equivalent.
Standard ATI Mobile Catalyst 6.9 drivers.
3D MARK05 2852
3D MARK03 4826
Company of Heroes
either a blank screen or BSOD.
Screw ATI and Acers crummy design and 64 bit memory bus. Switching back to Acer drivers perminently. It too bad, I had a good feeling. -
Hi Im new to this forum. I have the Aspire 5674 WLMI with Media Center. This is one awesome machine however it does have its quirks. I am using a logitech 270 blue tooth mouse and had to dnload the driver directly from Logitech. The mouse will lag and drop some times but what i have also noticed is that the quick function buttons at the top right near the power switch will only work with the email and www key. The P key and the E key stopped as soon as i installed the mouse. Any ideas. Also on the forum i found my solution to the blurry orbit cam. Turning the low light boost off works. Thanks.
All in all i find this notebook very fast how ever it does get hot. The exhuast port on the right hand side is a bit of a pain since if you are right handed, using the mouse results in your hand consistantly getting blasted with warm/hot air. Also the generaly temperature of the unit is an anoyance if you are keyboarding alot because the surface temp of the keyboard and where your wrist lies, also tends to heat up. I removed a plastic barrier that for some strange reason was placed inside the bottom cover that restricted air flow to the fan. Turn yours over and tell me why they would close off the air intake for the processer? It seems to run a tad cooler when i did this.
Thanks for any info.
randy -
Cajun, that plastic cover you removed was there to keep negative pressure in your laptop case. It forces air to be sucked in from another location which then cools the chips as it gets pulled past the chips as it moves toward the fan and then out the back and right side exhaust vents. That solution keeps the case cooler but the processor will run a bit hotter.
I would replace that plastic cover unless you decide to mod your fan shroud by cutting a hole into it to aid in blowing air over the chips that would otherwise not get any air movement since air does not get forced over the chips now that air can enter where the plastic cover was, right over the fan. I hope that makes sense... It keeps the processor cooler but the case will warm up even more

Thank you for starting this thread. It has been very helpful. I have an Acer 5672WLMi (X1600, 1GB RAM) and I would like to fresh install Windows XP Pro. Please answer the following if possible, and I hope that it could help anyone with the idea of Windows fresh install:
1. Are the reccomendations in first post still the best solution in your opinion (are they updated)?
2. What Acer software must be used and is there any way to use multimedia keys without installing Acer software?
3. Is there any way of installing sound driver without adding the Realtek sound icon in tray and without that stupid sound manager of Realtek?
4. I have three zip files in Acer Bios folder, which one should I use for updating the Bios?
5. Even with highest setting, volume in very good headphones of mine is very low - is there a way to make headphones sound better?
5. Is there anything new JohnnyT could add since we did not hear from him for some time on this thread?
Of course, anyone who can help, I would be thankful.
Thank you in advance. -
The process of reinstalling drivers is correct, however I will disagree with the first part of his setup. Instead of making a 20 gig partition I would suggest you do the following
A. Obtain a windows xp home / pro oem disk to reinstall xp.
B. Download Acronis True Image 7 for FREE and backup your entire hard drive partition table
C. Create a backup DVD with Acer's software
D. Download all needed drivers before you format.
E. Format the ENTIRE partition of the hdd to free up extra space and reinstall XP with the key on the bottom of your pc.
I only use Acer_Epower Management software for my pc. This allows me to enable and disable hardware on my pc.
You do not need to install any software to get the multimedia hotkeys to work properly. I simply enabled "global hotkeys" in winamp and it worked perfectly. It also works by default with winamp, etc.
First and foremost no, however you can disable the .exe from starting up with msconfig.
Check out this link - http://www.ecsusa.com/downloads/winFlash.html
Don't forget to backup your origional bios first! Also don't flash your bios unless something is wrong or something is needed (core 2 proc).
You need to remember the master audio is not the only sound tab on your pc. You will need to increase the wave audio output to increase your overall audio output in most cases.
Other than a custom windows xp pre-activation guide that I'm working on currently, I do not see anything down the road.

Does the DVD Rom support DVD-RAM DVD's?
-
I do believe that if listed in the specificaitons they must carry it by law. so yes of course it supports it.
-
i mean for the aspire 5672WLMi series.. does the MAT****A DVD drive support burning DVD-RAM format?
thanks. -
Hey guys, sorry I haven't been on in a while, I am just swamped here at college, let me know if you need anything though. Also let me know if anything in my post needs updating. Thanks!

What's the word on doing a Core 2 Duo upgrade?
-
Hi,
i'm having a really big trouble with this laptop, when i got it 1st thing i did was remove all partitions and install xp pro.
after install, everything works great, i can get into safe mode, shuts down fast, but after i install all drivers from acer website (do i need all of them? ones like atheros etc) then start installing software i have MAJOR problems.
i keep getting drwatson postmortem debugger crashes, when this error happens i cant open anything without that error which then crashes anything im trying to open. i have to restart to correct this. but still happens again shortly. i also expierence extremely slow shutdown times and i can't boot into safe mode anymore, loading just stops at TDI.sys
i managed to stop the drwatson crash by removing the ATI stuff and using omega, but the slow shutdown and not being able to get into safe mode problems are still there.
i was living with it for a while but now the crashing has come back. i can use everything fine for about half an hour to 1 hour then everything i try to open crashes.
i also tried updating the bios and getting the latest intel and realtek drivers
i also removed atheros and most of the acer e.. programs.
i have reformatted the laptop twice now with still the same problems.
i really need help on this one, is it drivers? software? hardware?
thanks very much. -
Try installing only the things you need, make sure to read through my steps. You are probably installing things that you don't realy need and that is what is causing all the problems.
ps. make sure to keep your windows up to date -
thanks. i think im going to try putting in another hard drive and install stuff until the problems start then go back and remove the drivers from my original.
-
i opened up my laptop to get reminded that it is a sata hard drive so i couldnt use the ide drive i had.
can anyone think of any other way to find the problem driver without reformatting?
thanks -
Hey Johnny thanks for creating this thread man, been really helpful.
Any idea when/if Acer is ever going to let us upgrade to Core 2 Duo? -
Well, I don't know about when Acer is, but if you don't care much for keeping your warranty, have updated your bios to the latest version, and are pretty slick with laptop hardware, then go ahead and give her a go. But I would not recommend it as the improvements are currently minimal in upgrading to a Core 2 Duo and it is spendy.

Has anyone found stable drivers for the ATI mobility X1600 yet?! This is ridiculous, only driver i am able to use is the original one that came with this laptop although it still crashes in Counter Strike: Source if you dont restart windows after it goes to standby, all other drivers crash in counter strike after 5 minutes. Company of Heroes doesnt work well with any other drivers besides the original ones.

First and foremost drop the freaking red font and talk like a human being.
Secondly I have had nothing but great success with the omega drivers, while you may have issues I have not had them so tough beans if you have.
If it don't work it's a SOFTWARE issue and something on your partiular pc. Try the 3.8 omega drivers or the latest ones from ATI. By posting your question here it is pointless because this is on the how-to section not your partiular problem. We have done a how-to reinstall drivers and if they work great for us and not for you I'm sorry but yea. =( Go make a new post and please edit this current one. The ammount of red is hurting my eyes.
Thank you
--ssx-- -
SSX, what do you play?
-
Well currently I play the following
World of Warcraft
Battlefield 2
Battlefield 2142
Any Valve software game (HL1 / HL2 engine)
NFS: Carbon
GTA: SA
Call of Duty 2
Call of Duty UO / Mods/ etc.
UTK4
etc.
I have had no lockups or problems since the day I bought it. If you are still having problems I would suggest that you go download driver cleaner and install it on your pc. Reboot in safemode with no networking (F8 on startup) and run all of the ATI cleaning tools avalible to you.
Then reinstall the omega drivers or ATI's drivers (depending on what floats your boat).
Hope this helps, and again people please do not reply in this section / thread if it has been addressed! Make a new thread or topic or use the search button for more help. I realize that this thread is getting longer and harder to search though, but that is why the first post is included and can be modifed to help people further.

Hey all, I have just put Windows Vista Ultimate , the real version not beta, and I will let you all know and add more info to my main front when I get a chance. So far it is going smooth as butter and haven't had much for driver issues, however I still haven't tried to get my camera working.
Keeping you posted,
JohnnyT -
Hi there!!!
I just installed Vista RC 5600 Ultimate, everything goes fine except the multimedia keyboard at the left side of the real keyboard.
I can't turn up and down the volume.
Is there any driver missing? Anyone got this problem or other problem with Vista?
tks -
i used a driver cleaner in safe mode, restarted, and installed omega drivers in safe mode; Counter Strike STILL freezes. With any driver there is always a 1 second freeze in the game, and then its fine, but with omega drivers it does a 2nd TOTAL freeze 2 minutes later. SSX you are obviously not playing CSS on this laptop.
-
Ok DominickA I'm sorry that you have been having problems with your 5672, but do not tell me that I'm not playing CS:S when in fact I am. Please first and foremost look here at my Acer Aspre 5672 review this August - http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,16348055 in which I run extensive tests and show the cpu / memory usage while playing BF2 and CS:S. So thank you for basically calling me a liar, it feels great..... thanks.
If more proof is needed I'm not sure what you are looking for.... in game screen shots? fraps videos? Please, just don't say I'm obviously not playing CS:S on this laptop because that would simply not be true. Yeesh...
Have a little respect for someone else who might have the pc up and running on all current games without problems. I'm not looking down upon you but please, don't be calling people liars and starting a possible flame war on fourms.
Thanks
--ssx-- -
CS:S runs great on Vista
Final
-
Agreed! If you got problems with the 5672 that are listed in our how to guide take it up with our main fourms and don't post here. Not trying to sound harsh but it is most likely your problem and configuration and not the entire community as a whole. End of story

Hi and thanks everyone for this thread, has been really helpful for finding a few drivers. I also own this laptop (5672 with 1600ATI card). I am running a triple boot with XPpro, Vista(final RTM) and Ubuntu. All drivers work fine on XP and vista but linux has various issues.
Regarding issues with windows ATI drivers released by ACER, do you guys know that you can just modifiy the latest catalyst desktop drivers from the ATI website using the mobility mod tool? ( http://www.3dchipset.com/utilities/ati/laptop/modder.php)
I use this and just install the latest drivers whenever they come out. I play a few 3D games (not as many of the FPS as others here though) and have not yet had any problems.
For the webcam in windows vista, I found that the best way to get it working was to find the acer driver that works in windows XP, install that, and then install the logitech Quickcam messenger software designed for vista. Everything works except for the face mapping features.
One problem I have had with this laptop is wen doing a clean install of windows XP pro (OEM) that my ACER OEM XP PRO product key was unable to work. Im pretty sure I used the right install CD, maybe the key is just not designed to work with a CD install. -
If you want to make sure you oem pro disk is in fact oem look here - http://www.freepctech.com/pc/xp/xp00066.shtml
Check your PID's on the disk. if they say oem they are oem.
--ssx-- -
yeah Im really sure I used the right cd anyway, because I had to use a product key from an OEM windows installtion on my work computer and that worked fine
-
Hey just a quick question to anyone who might know, I am thinking about putting in some more ram. The manual that came my computer states only 2gb maximum. However if I use the bios utility ( http://download.esupport.com/biosagent/ba.exe) it states that I can install a maximum of 4gb. Anyone have any idea which is correct? Also I would be interested if anyone has any info on a processor upgrade just incase in the future I decide its a good option.
-
I just reformatted and cant install intel VGA chipset drivers "+ AS5670_Intel_Chipset Intel Chipset Drivers 8.1.1.1001" says one or more components missing.
How can i fix this or will i be fine wihtout them? -
the vga drivers (ATI) require you to have .net framework 1.1 and 2.0 for the control center to install and work properly.
1. Download and install the motherboard chipset drivers + install them
2. Go to microsoft.com or windows update page and download + install .net framework 1.1 and 2.0
3. Use the omega driver or default ATI drivers again (it should work)
--ssx-- -
i have .net 1.1 installed without ATI control center. Intel vga chipset drivers still wont install "one or more components missing"
-
Oh.... dude you don't need the intel vga drivers. If you downloaded those off the 5672 link then you are mistaken b/c you don't have an intel videocard (or intergrated) you have a GPU that is built by ATI. Just forget those drivers, it's complaining that it can't find something that does not exist.
And please, DominickA and other future posters to this thread.
Please keep your questions out of this thread and keep them in the main section of the Acer forums! By you asking questions here and not in the main section you make this thread longer and harder to sort though! We will link your questions on the front page if it is news or problem worthy.
Thank you
--ssx-- -
Did you NOT see the previous post? Take your issues to the main forum not here. THIS is the kind of stuff I'm talking about people!
Sheesh
shidao go post this question in the main fourm and edit this post. People will help you there.... not here.
Also please EDIT your previous post so more people like yourself don't post here.
