That is true - I wonder if it is a reflection of the fact that it is using such a lot of virtual memory?
-
Sorry to make yet another post but I really think we are beginning to get somewhere on this problem.
I've just realised that I have not applied any of the patches mentioned early in this thread by Egghead and described as "Four Must-Have Vista Updates". It may be that those of you who have applied these have actually fixed the problem but had not realised it because we were getting confused with Vista's use of physical RAM as a cache.
Have any of you who have applied these patches had the low memory error mesage since they have been applied? If not then I think that may be the solution! -
I have allowed the system to set the virtual memory and downloaded one of the the hotfix supplied by Egghead (the other three were already downloaded). My daughter has not had any further memory problems whilst on MSN and Explorer.

This one: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940105 -
Those four updates won't come in as part of regular Windows security updates?

I don't know about you guys, but I'll be waiting a few weeks after SP1 release to see how it's being received...
-
Just read in latest MaximumPC that Firefox has an ongoing memory leakage problem. I didn't know that.
Mozilla hopes to have the problem fixed in Firefox 3, due out in a few months. -
I was determined the issues I was having were because Vista is bad.
At the moment Firefox is not on my system as I have just finished a clean install and am in the midst of applying the final touches of cleaning out all the extra rubbish that gets installed and stripping out uneccessary services and startup entries etc.
I have followed some of the advice from flamenko's Top Windows Vista Tweaks You Can Find and am currently impressed with the results.
I've had some issues with the partitions on my laptop as I am reconfiguring the machine for a dual boot with Linux (and that should draw some comparissons for performance) but as I continue using the laptop I am actually getting more comfortable with it - it seems to be aware I am cheesed off with it's lack of performance and is trying to improve things for me. (Or am I just getting used to working more slowly myself?) -
Thanks Egghead, for posting the link to those tweaks - I had missed them and they look useful.
I've finally been able to get the KB940105 patch installed so hopefully this will address the frequent low memory errors. I'll post here if they reappear. -
Egghead -
+1 on the thanks for the Vista link.
If you want some help with partitioning for Linux, let me know. I got off to the wrong start with the partitioning, but really happy with the results now. -
Found out about some Indexing issues which may help find some CPU cycles back for some. I'd be happy to just sack the whole indexing service as my files are not normally that numerous and I never need to search for them.
May come in useful as some info for those suffering with Vista. -
i also have a lot of problems with acer aspire 5920g ,the acer empower software takes also a lot of memory.and norton also and then we have vista.
those 3 takes a lot of memory. you cant even download software for your acer, without errors ,chrashes, bluescreen, freezes etc..
i know every time if install other software then norton ,the acer empower software does not function correct. example with avg and avast the acer wifi conection is automatic turned off, you have to put it on every time.
not that only because the memory is also low when you start the computer
all the aplications start really slow. sometime its like 5 min ,sometimes 3min
etc..
iff i dont have any antivirus on my pc then the acer starts perfect fast
and all other applications also witin 1 min and seconds.
also with ccleaner it wont work faster , the frees is always coming if i dont use the pc for 4 hour, its freeses and you cant do nothing
so what can you do , i also dont know? i also like some advise.
can somebody help which components of acer empower i can uninstall?
or deactivated it by start up?
helpppppppppppppppppppppppppp i working on these problems for a whole month.
restored the system 15 times
and tomorrow i have to do it again **** man!!!!
please help it was 1000 euro man. -
Sorry to hear you are having such severe problems. If it is any consolation then it is not typical. Apart from the low memory issue that sems to have been fixed by the patch mentioned slightly earlier in this thread (KB940105) Vista on my 5920G has been very stable. I have sucessfully loaded several new applications without any sign of the problems that you mention.
It sounds as though something more serious is wrong - perhaps you need to speak to Acer? -
where can i download this patch kb940105
thank you for the info
do you maybe now which off acer components i can uninstall because i uninstall acers games, and i dont know if i need elock, edata etc...
and what can this patch do exactly? -
Sorry, I don't know for sure what else you can get rid of. I guess it depends which ones you want to use!
The patch I mentioned above corrects the way that applications use Virtual Memory. My 5920 was frequently giving Low Memory errors and having to be reloaded. -

Don't try to uninstall the Acer Empowerment stuff entirely. Go into msconfig and uncheck the checkmark so it doesn't start at startup.
That way you can start Acer Empowerment any time you want from the "Start" menu, or re-check the startup tab. In other words, you're not doing something irretrievable.
The website for that Windows patch is here... -
I had to do this twice - I uninstalled Norton, and the next time I booted the lappy I got a message from Acer saying Norton had been reinstalled. So I had to kill it in the startup menu, then uninstall again. -
no i dont have 2 antivirus and i uninstall norton with remover tool from symantec
but thank for the info -
when i was unchecking everything of acer
i saw also a file (symantec core lc) do i have to deleted it
what is that i removed everthing of symantec wiht remove tool -
I googled symantec core and found lots of hits
Here's one guy who had the same problem...looks like he figured it out -
thank you this info really helpen out to remove sym core cl.
i gonna remove it .
how can i remove symantac core lc in services
and what effect does it have on other sofware installed . when you have avast, avg or acer empower technology
is this the problem of chrashes, slow performeces or blue screen
i removed everything with norton remove tool
and when i checked for more norton or symantec files. i saw symantec core cl and i think also symantec web support software.(ik i select i get a screen that i can install the symantec web support, also you can choose unistall, but then still its there, so i click it with my mouse and put it in the recycle bin and it was gonne.
can you tell me what effect does it have these 2 symantec files on my acer aspire 5920?????
thank you very much -
thank you for the patch its make my pc start within seconds its is realy faster
wow. thankyou
and i also unchecked all acer empower at start up. the pc start realy faster.
with start up i get windows defender its telling me that programs is blocked
just like you told me. but i have a spanish pc , so how can i start the acers empower easy , because my acer wifi connection is also blocked off course at start up. where do i have to press at the windows defender button to release the acer programs??? -
today when i finish work i gonna restore my system to factory settings.
and then remove first everything with norton removel tool,2. symantec core cl and the software of symantec webbsuport its called i think (symwp installer) which one of acer do i uncheck because when i start i like to have automatic my enet wifi turned on and acer epower .those 2 options is for automatic internet wifi connection at start up. and download the patch for memory leak wiht vista that you told me
thanks very much
i think your all right the acer empower doens't work at the same time with other software.
because at the acer lauch its says its works the best with norton and in fact only with norton symantec products
that waht acer at the beginning really says. -
rob500 said that its better to use Windows networking management for wifi connection. where can i find it.or do i have to download it?
because if my acer enet wifi connection is turned off or if i uncheck it
i cant find a other way to have wifi conection with windows vista.
i searched it but i can find it.
i prefferd to use windows networking management , so i can uncheck all acers empower options. -
You definitely do not have to download anything to use Windows networking management. It is one of the entries on the list you get if you go to Start/Run and type services (or services.msc) but I'm sorry I cannot remember what it was called and don't have a Vista computer here at the moment to check. I suggest you look through all the ones that have a Startup Type of Manual for one that looks likely and then try changing it to Automatic.
-
rob500 one question?
if i find de windows network management, can i uncheck everyting of acer empower software also the acer wifi enet? if the windows network managment is on or working, do i need the acer preinstalled software?
because its takes a lot of memory and its starts really slow to connect with internet etcc..
i saw windows tweaks process i gonna do that also only some tweaks i gonna do.
and gonna use start inspector also.
what problems did you have with acer empower technology software?
i had problems if i download other applications the system is realy slow etc..
do you have any information or experience with the pre installed nti-cd,dvd maker on my acer 5920g laptop? shall i uninstall it and install nero 8.
i also have a powerproducer cyberlink pre installed its also to burn etc..
do i realy need those programs or just only nero 8? -
If you find the Windows network management service then that will only replace the Empower eNet application not the other ones. Some of the others are actually quite useful but, obviously, it depends what you need.
I have not tried the NTI CD-DVD maker on the 5920 but I have used it on the laptop I have here at the moment that runs Windows XP - it seems to work very well. I've never used Powerproducer cyberlink so cannot comment on that - sorry.
Have you tried following the Vista tweaks that were linked to much earlier in this thread by Egghead - they might help with your problems? -
no still not did the tweaks. i am at the moment at my work.
i gonna do that today europe time 2000 o clock.
well wat i like to use on my laptop is download movies , music, with along codecs for it , nero 8 is easy to burn automatic cds
use it to put learning softwares like english, spanish practice
playing one game called halo 2 for online gaming
torrent to download things.
word and arobat dobe 8 for office things.
msn chat
that it.
and that my acer works fast and good without erros and off course virus protection
thats all i dont need other things.
so maybe you can tell me what programs i can uncheck maybe -
I'm sorry Flashlight27 but I don't have the 5920 (or any Vista computer) with me here at the moment and am not likely to for several days so it is difficult to go through and suggest exactly what you might need. However, the best way to approach it is usually to disable things temporarily and one at a time - then see whether you can still do everything that you want to. I would recommend at least keeping the power management software but others may have different opinions.
I'd suggest that if you want some wider advice it might be worth starting a new thread with a better title as lots of people will probably not be looking at this one unless they have the specific low memory problem that was mentioned right at the beginning. -
Here's one website that lists all the Windows services and gives some guidelines for which ones can be turned off.
http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm
I'm not sure which ones need to be turned on to get Windows networking functional, but would like to know!
I noticed the same thing with my 5920 - Windows didn't see the network that I was plugged into until I turned Acer Empowerment back on again from the Start menu.
flashlight, it might be best if you reinstalled again and tried to be more methodical next time when pruning services. Take notes of everything you do, so you can retrace your steps if need be. -
i have readed that he said never ever download a patch if you dont now for what its for?
i downloaded a patch that you recommed earlier before the kb94 or something but its works great
it was for vista home premium path or not?
for the memory leak problem
can you only tell me what kind a path it was and for what exactly?
sorry that i ask a lot i am a newby -
one more question .
i am gonna restore my acer empower to factory setting a again today.
and use the advise that all of you recommend or whats good to do.
the first software thats start is the acer launch (its installing autmatic the acer empower software.)
then i the norton warning signal that norton is not complet and that i have arrange the software off norton etc..
shall i first remove norton with remove tool and then at start ,run
for symantec core cl and symantec web support file also.
to get rid off any norton symantec files.
and then check for updates for windows and install them.
if i do that .must i also download the patches for memory leak the kb94 .....
and download start inspector and do a tweak process.
what do you do first against the problems that we spoked off before??
and download other software like avast antivirus or other stuff afters all this process -
I don't know if I'd trust the Norton uninstaller. They might not want to be completely helpful. I just used the Windows Add/Remove function in Control Panel to get rid of Norton.
Someone else already mentioned it, and I've gotta agree...you should probly start a fresh thread, something like "Optimizing Vista on Laptop X"
Yeah, if you do a system restore you'll have to get the kb fixes again.
Download AVG and your anti-spyware stuff to a thumb drive before uninstalling Norton. You don't want to go online unprotected, even if it's only long enuf to get the anti-malware products.
Latest MaximumPC recommends a new addition to anti-virus software. Dangit I can't remember the name right now. It's free. -
my problems is solved with wifi off and on connection( i just turned off enet)
and turned on windows network management ( so no problems more) also not with start up process.
did the tweaks (almost everything) and download vista tweak software 30 days trial version.
uninstall nti cd dvd maker (40mb)
unchecked acer vcm and acer edata, elock, esettings, enet
and start inspector (but get i get problems with it it dont unchecked start up programs that i dont need (like adobe reading etc...)
i get a error its says C:acer vcm or something
so with vista tweak software my acer is faster.
what a releaf.
after hours, days up to amonth . its solved -
But glad to hear you've gotten the thing under control anyway. And learned a few things too! -
well empower for the moment is solved.
but do you have any tips with which torrent is for dowload works on vista
and how can i use the right port for downloading
do you know mabye where i can download codecs for vista . for playing movies
that i download. for windows media player -
Ok, I got a noob question for everyone. I can't select my video memory setting in my bios.........it's uh.....greyd out. hmmmm.......is the minimum of [8MB] what I am stuck with? I've got 3gb DDR2 and X3100 video card with a potential of 358MBs......hmmmmm..
-
oh yeah it's an aspire 5920(not 5920g).
-
can this info to be with my acer Ferrari 1000 laptop, cuz i having the problem also
-
I'm not sure which problem you now refer to as the thread has drifted a long way from its initial subject. In case it is the original low memory problem then, for the record, I eventually tracked it down to a serious memory leak in Windows Live Messenger. I switched to using Pidgin as an MSN client instead and the problem went away. If anyone wants more details then let me know.
-
