Try to turn of the power icon in the taskbar. Then restart. This may work.

Sad to say - same problem on my aspire 2000. i had sound at the beginning of the week, then was updating general software and sound went away. possibly tied to moving from bios 1.04 to 1.07, but not sure. also seeing svchost.exe maxed out while trying to stop the fax service, so i had to disable that so that problem would go away. good news is that it did, bad news is still no audio. tried upgrading to XP SP2, tried fcn-F8 several times, tried fcn-vol up/down, tried maxing volume controls, updated audio drivers several times (just did 3.70)... i don't get any audio at all, not even crackling.

couple items i've been checking: if i go to control panel and open "sound options", the volume slider on the main page is disabled. i can check all the other pages and everything seems normal, but it's weird that the front page is grayed out.

all my volume sliders in the volume control options are maxed out. i tried headphones too - no sound there either. this is on an acer aspire 2000 w/ realtek ac'97 audio. someone suggested full shutdown, remove battery, restart - but that didn't appear to fix anything for me. [ :(]

i did stop the fax service - has anyone considered possible weird behavior between the agere ac'97 modem and the realtek ac'97 audio? i don't have any conflicts in device manager, but i'm grasping at straws here - this is very frustrating!!!

ok, here's an interesting update. after installing 3.70 (and pounding fcn-f8 a couple dozen times), i get different behavior from control panel.

i go to control panel, open "sounds and audio devices" and now the device volume is enabled. i max it out and hit apply, but no sounds play. so i reboot, thinking maybe it just needs to be reset now that it's suddenly enabled, and when it comes back up, it's disabled again. [ :(!]

now, re-pounding fcn-f8 does nothing and i can't get it enabled again. seems like this is the direction of the problem, but i can't get it reproducible enough to root cause.

I don't know if this would be the same issue mine is a TM4000, but when I got it it had a lot of sound card quirks. The noise floor was terrible and it made a squacking sound on re-boot from standby. The mixer ( I think this is what you folks are saying) would shut off the device sound on re-boot.. So I tossed the Acer software an installed a REAL version of XP Pro. Now everything has worked since. Not only that my 60 gig hard drive was originally 2x 26.3 and now it's 56 gigs so I gained 3gigs. Thats another movie. I think the Acer software is worthless. I read a lot of posts and this is the conclusion I've come too..scrap the cheezy OS and all will work fine after that.

Another update to the Realtek drivers guys.. 3.71..

    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-2.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=8&Software=True

3.70 didnt resolve my issue. Now I am getting random 'No Bluetooth Device' messages when enabling BT in WinXP... time for a fresh reinstall I think! :(

    cheers,

i'm sure it goes without saying, but just in case this helps anyone...

the sound on my aspire2000 died just as i was about to give my wife the laptop to use as her primary. unfortunately, while she never used her sound before, she has just discovered launchcast and is in love with it. so i needed a sound solution before she would swap.

after scratching my head for weeks, it occurred to me that usb sound would work. turtle beach makes a "laptop audio upgrade" kit - i bought mine from amazon for $40, it came in about a week, and it worked on the first try.

onboard realtek still doesn't work, but at least she has sound now.

Hay Guys, what's the latest situation ?

Did anybody manage to find a solution to this problem ?

Is there anyone who fixed this by RMA to Acer ?

As of me, nothing has changed after trying various things. Almost every other time I start the computer, sound is not there.

Hello, I have also he same problem, nothing to add that you guyz have said so far. It's a 2012 Wlmi, it does it for me half of the time i restart my compter, but by the power button, if i reboot via windows, normally, then no sound on clean boot up.

If i press a few sec power off and it shut off directly, i can power back up right away and it works...

I just wanted to say Acer did not replyto my email, about this problem, i have had replies before for other problems that they fixed BUT this particular problem THEY do not reply, so THEY KNOW for sure.. why reply to my other 3 problems before and not this one....

Anyway i took apart my laptop some times ago, can't we change the onboard audio card ?.. i already added the bluetooth on the 2012wlmi and the second ram card 1gig...

If only we could fix this problem of sound, this laptop would be for me flawless !!!

regards to all, i will keep an eye around aswell for solutions

yes it is a pity, i really like this laptop, i tried it all so far to make it work. One thing, when i reinstalled windows without the sp2 i did not notice the problem ? maybe it's one of the update in sp2 that causes the problem. I will try again to reinstall windows without sp2 and see if that does it.. then i can install the updates one by one instead of the full sp2 packages....

acer should do something about this..

    Hi
I have the same problem, sometimes when playing movies, the sound creep and the blue led of the laptop flash every 10 seconds, and the video become slow. First ,I get this problem with windows media player and other multimedia softs, under Windows XP prof , i uninstalled this version, and installed the version which came with the original packaging. Now the probleme come back, i reboot the laptop, (it reboots 2 times alone [)]) and the sound and video return to initial settings [} :)]
I already sent my laptop to acer, when having this problem and a disk problem (when starting my laptop no more HDD) they changed the hdd.
Seems that the acer laptop are too sensitive to motion [xx(] . It always happens after traveling with my laptop ( the laptop seat with me [ :D]not with the luggage).

And this is a risky problem [ :(] you have to monitor your computer by a camcorders and send the video to acer so in this case they may recognize that we have a real bug [ :p]

    Acer ..................;[V]

    Hello

Again, and for the second times in 6 months my acer aspire 2023 had a hdd loss data loss , no way to access windows, and after few days , sometimes more or less, all the problems vanish ! 2 weeks laters the same happened.

Sound problem --then the Computer rebooted ---and finally-- No more computer -----

The worst thing is that it crashed when i was doing a back up of my work no more trust on Acer notebook

I send it back to acer, i read the 1 st report, they suspected the motherboard controler and the hdd :decision: , but they exchanged only the hdd. :budget: and this time they swapped the hdd and the motherboard .

what the hell are they manuafacturing gadget ?

No more Acer in your life, no more drama in your life

I'm having the same problem. Its kind of embarassing/annoying when i fly places because it wastes battery life and makes the computer look crappy.

I have a PCMCIA Audigy 2 in the mail right now, I wonder if that will solve the problem, being an entirely new soundcard...

 Hey! I guest I got a solution to the Toshiba Satellite A70 sound problem!!! After trying and trying, reinstaling Bios, Drivers, DMI, whatever I found, finally I got the solution! . In the last 2 weeks I haven't had that problem again. To solve the problem I disable the Legacy USB support in the BIOS. I did this because when I left my portable USB HDD connected and I restart the machine or power on it, the sound never come again even thou I restart it over and over... OK, thats it, I disable the Legacy USB support and the sound problem never came again and my USB HDD works perfectly when I restart...
Sorry for my poor english, its because in Paraguay we like to speak guarani not much english  :p :toshiba: Aguyje peeme (Thanks) Roger

anyone has a solution ? i am getting so mad all the time starting up my comp. I wanted to try Linspire, and bam it looks like the 2012 has a problem booting up the linspire cd, most other laptop has no problem...

    its a pity...

on another note, my friend has a 1690 and his laptop came with Epowermanagement which us 2012 did not get, and needless to say Acer does not offer that soft on the 2012 support download page, but if you go to Aspire 1694 and download the soft, it works perfectly, and the power management and much much nicer and better than the crappy one with have....

    peace

    Hello every one,
I get back my notebook, this time they exchanged the hdd and the mother board ........... but after one week it goes down :eek:verheat: , i took photos and movies of this critical problem, i contacted the French SAV , they said come with your computer and we will resolve the problem.
I asked for a refund or an exchange after the 2 nd crash, but they said no. This time they want to give me 1692 (cost 1300 euros) and the one i bought cost me 2000 euros . :eek:verheat:

I am still in negotiation with them to get my money back or to give me a notebook with the same price as i bought it .

November 18th 2005, still no solution to the sound problem ?... so sad we all have to live with a buggy laptop, this was my first buy, for a laptop and from Acer. I am going to buy a new laptop this christmas and ACER WILL NOT be my choice. They have lost a customer for good. I work in a computer shop, and buil desktop machine for customer, and i have burned down Acer each time they needed a laptop. So Acer has lost over 10 laptops customer, but HP is happy !

On Ebay there are thousands of laptop parts for HP ! Monitor, mtherboard, etc.. If you look up Acer, less than 10 parts in the whole world on Ebay !...

Well guys, unfortunetelly this is not a soultion post, but it's to see if anyone has a solution ? yet ! )

I read some bought usb sound card or pcmica card. Is it any good ? can you disable the onboard sound card on the laptop (2012) ?... maybe i can buy one, if it does not do the problem anymore.
    thanks
    Maxim
