I tried clockgen it worked like a charm and actually set it to 1.95ghz without crashing. However, once I boot the computer up it constantly crashes with the vertical bars showing. I don't know why this is happening.

I then tried to just open clockgen without changing the values (1.6ghz), and the computer still crashes on startup at the desktop.

Are there similar programs out there that can overclock the processor and RAM? Has anyone tried using the registered version of notebook hardware control to overclock the processor?

At 1.95ghz and overclocked RAM the computer ran very smoothly and had a big improvement in games. :)

Hi, I am brand new here.

TO ANYONE WHO HAS BOUGHT THIS LAPTOP -

----DO NOT UPGRADE YOUR BIOS TO VERSION 2.72-----

Even though acer reccommends you upgrade your bios and system drivers if your planning to upgrade to vista dont upgrade the BIOS! I upgraded my systems BIOS last night from ACER's own ftp site and my laptop won't boot anymore! After the Windows XP logo comes up the screen just goes black and nothing happens after that, it just freezes. Called ACER this morning and they have arranged for DHL to collect my laptop by 5pm today. Anyone out there know how to downgrade the BIOS, used the recovery cd's with no luck.

Any one know how to downgrade the BIOS?

Do you perhaps use an external USB hdd? If that is the case, just switch the hdd off before booting. Windows would behave the same way for me when keeping the drive on.

    @Bryan839

    Hi,

can you boot from a diskette drive? If yes make a bootable disk, copy the bios files there. Make a autoexec.bat which has the dos commands for flashing the bios and boot from the diskette. I think if you can boot from a usb stick you can do that also.

I updated my bios to 2.72 also. No problem, yet. It is better than 2.60.
Who said not to flash to 2.72? Anyone from Acer?
    Is it your opinion?

I think a lot of people went to 2.72 and did not had any problems. I do not know what went wrong with your bios flash. It could also be a memory, mainboard or usb problem which leads you to not be able to load windows xp. If you had a bad bios normaly the notebook will not boot!

I hope you get your notebook back soon. It would be nice if you could tell us what was wrong with your notebook.

    Yours

    Tom

I modded the X1100 inf files for use in the 7.1 X64 version. Seem to be working fine.

The 2.72 BIOS has been removed from Acer Europe.

    Hi ,

I just bought this laptop and the wireless build in card is not working.

I known my wireless router (D-Link DI-524) is OK and works fine since my other laptop work with the D-Link wireless USB device.
I even try the D-Link USB device with the Acer and iconnection is not working as well.

What is strange is that Acer can see the wireless network , it seems to be connected to it but when I click on the wireless icon in the task bar, it said :
"Limited connectivity or non-existent". I can see that some packets has been sent but it cannot receive anything /.

Anoyone known what is my problem ?

    Thanks

    hello all,
must say I stumbled across this forum the other week when I brought a 5102wlmi and its been dead useful catching up on all the posts here, so thanks all.
now a quick question of my own: does anyone else have problems with multiple programs using sound at the same time? for example, if I have music playing with winamp/itunes/wmp and someone logs into messenger the music will start jumping and skipping - sounds like its a bad rip.
I've updated the drivers but no joy. It doesnt happen every time and all I need to do is pause&unpause the music but its still frequent enough to be annoying since I have my itunes shuffling pretty much all day.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks :)

Hibernate error: Insufficient System Resources Exist to Complete the API

When I tried to enter in hibernate mode, I was getting that error sometimes after I upgraded to 1.5G memory and always after I upgraded to 2G.

it needs a fix from microsoft, article kb909095:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909095

it is one of the new downloads that checks for a genuine XP copy.

What has the experience been on upgrading to Windows Vista? Does going to the 64 bit version make a difference?

I have a 5102 64 bit system currently running windows xp pro.

Now anyone know why on earth acer didnt release a bios update were it's possible to give more video ram if u upgrade the ram to like 2gb! i only get 2.6 score on vista for graphics and thats crap

Thats odd. I couldnt find the x1100 listed when trying to find them yesterday on the ati site.

And that link you posted, is there a special link somewhere for the drivers for the x1100?

According to the description under 'Performance Improvements' the OpenGL performance improvement is for X1000 series chips only, I don't think that equates to the Xpress series (happy to be corrected though). Also, any improvements will only be noticed under Windows Vista.

It is probably worth upgrading for the new features though - improved Catalyst start-up time, improved stability, less resource usage, etc.

Sorry for the noob question, but I have a 5102 with the ATi Xpress 1100, and it came with the ATI catalyst Control Center etc. (I'm sure just like you guys).

I'm new to the 'ATI catalyst stuff' (this is the first computer I've owned that had it).

It seems like a huge program, and one that's got parts in every nook and cranny of my system.

Could someone tell me just how you go about upgrading this thing? (Can you install the entire new "Control Center 'over the top' of the old one?)

Secondly, am I missing something here?
In the links I see above, I don't actually see where (or what), to download for the new version.

    Thanks for any help.

Yep, I've got XP and I found the Radeon Xpress 1150 you're talking about.

I've got to head out for tonight, but I'll give it a shot later on.

All Acer 5102 come with the bluetooth button but not all come with the bluetooth device. look at the sticker wich describes the laptop configuration. if it doesn't mention bluetooth, your laptop don't have the device.

    Thanks for the reply.
But during the installation i saw that successfully set up a new hardware - was found as well.
This motivated me to think that I have bluetooth device, and but I do thing incorrectly and cannot make it to function.
I cannot in the moment post Screenshots, but it is interesting that after the installation devicemanager shows that there are such devices, after a restarting as well some of them vanish.

    IIS Installation Problem:

I was trying to install IIS and I was getting the message Cannot copy staxmem.dll Put Windows XP Sp2 in the drive.

looking at the I386 folder I could find that file. trying to use the file from a CD gave the same error. the file existed but wasn't "seen" by the operating system

the problem is a corrupt Secedit.sdb database file, according to that article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=894351

the solutions presented in the same article didn't solved the problem.

to solve the problem the following commad must be typed inside a command prompt box:

    esentutl /p %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb

There is NO BLUETOOTH DEVICE inside the Acer 5102.

The Bluetooth button fooled me too.

I just bought a $25 Bluetooth USB Dongle. Now Bluetooth works fine.

The Bluetooth button cannot control the dongle tho. Meaning turn it on/off.

Not only - if you search here a little bit you would find how to install an internal Bluetooth module. If you have had installed the module the switch on the front would work. Simple said the switch is for an internal USB Port ;-).

I am now the proud owner of a 5103AWLMi which is basically the 5102 with dedicated ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 Graphics and a extra 20 GIG of hard drive. Although a 100 GIG of hard drive is suffcient the lack of dedicated graphics let the overall spec down on the 5102AWLMi.

After upgrading my BIOS my computer would not boot up, the windows XP logo would show then the laptop screen would go black. I sent it back to ACER on the 8th Feb, still havnt got it back!

My laptop stopped working on the 07-02-07, was picked up by DHL on the 8th and ACER Plymouth repair centre recieved it on the 9th.
12th Feb - Hard Drive was replaced - good so far!
    13th - Feb - Failed Testing - fab!
14th Feb - Motherboard Ordered - it shoulnt take to long.......(how wrong was I???)

Now after many 0870 calls later they are still awaiting the 'motherboard', as it is 'on order'. They are constanly rude and unhelpfull on the phone. I was told the other day that if the motherboard still hasnt arrived with them on the 7th March, I can have my laptop shipped back to me unrepaired with an RNA number to take it back to comet for an exchange. Called back today to confirm this and see if the part has come in, and they said I will not be eligible for an RNA number! I am so annoyed you wouldnt believe it! Any suggestions anybody, what rights have I got to getting a replacement with comet?

    Hi there,

I have some stability issues with my 5102 like many of you, when power saving is on. I tried XP and Vista clean installs. I think that I've managed to fix a part of the problem, my default BIOS version was 2.00, I've flashed it to the 2.60 version and now it seems to work, the green led of the power button disappears for the first time since I own the computer, in power saving mode and I'm able to wake it without any problem, after several tests. But recently, it freezed again at screen saving state... I ran a Memtest and 5 errors were detected in about 10 minutes (stock 2x512 MB PC4200 Hynix RAM)

After a long read of the topic, it seems that everybody agrees that Crucial RAM (especially 1 GB PC4200 - CT12864AC53E) is a very good one. Do you think that my problem would be fixed for good if I buy that memory and thrash my Hynix buggy RAM?

    Thank you by advance.

Has anyone else had problems with the CD/DVD drive? I had to swap out the first machine I had due to a non-functioning drive (don't remember the exact details, maybe the same problem as I'm having now?). Now again I'm having problems. It seems that I can play DVD videos and audio CDs, but I can't read CD-Roms or burn DVDs (haven't tested reading data dvds or burning CDs yet.) Please let me know if you have an idea what the problem is.

Edit: I think I fixed the problem, sorry to bother.

Recently my friend plugged in her logitech web cam to her 5102 laptop, and afterward her laptop keep restarting itself every two minute. And the error msg says missing driver.

Is the logitech webcam incompatible with the acer's system?

Anyone have any idea how to resolve this problem?

    Please help!!

    @Philrio
It sounds like every other 5102 except the Acer Cam and the Acer Wireless Card. In your description there is no Bluetooth and Infrared. And you will not have the 200M Video Chipset because it is a shared DDR-Ram Chipset and the processor is a DDR-2 Processor. Nearly every program will say it is the 200m because it is a 200m with a DDR-2 controller - so it is (drums) the 1100 Chipset. If you have luck it will be the 1150 or the 1200 chipset - they are a little bit faster :). The wireless card will be just an other wireless card except of Intel :) - so it should be a Atheros or Broadcom.

Thanks for the feedback, I did not expect it to be much different, most posts here have 1GB Ram mine comes with 2GB... I will post what I actually get when I have a chance to look at the system.

Overall in general it seems well liked and looks to be a great system,
I plan to dual boot for awhile then go 100% Linux.

Moving from my desktop a legacy 32 bit (1.7GHZ, 384MB Ram - broken Gateway PC) to an Acer Aspire 5102 I am sure I will notice a big difference.

    Card reader problems:

Hi, Just wondering if anyone else is having problems with their 5 in 1 card reader?

One day it was reading all my Memory Stick Duo's, now it will not read any of them?

However it will still read XD/SD etc, I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it, updating drivers to no avail!

Anybody help or provide some tips on how to get it working again?

    TIA

Great thread! I've experienced some trouble (like many others) with running games on my notebook. Thing is that even games like counterstrike lag, and worms. It runs quite good for 10-20 seconds, then it lags for about 5 seconds. This is similar to every game i've tried on my computer. Anyone else experienced this? I've tried different options for graphics. My 5102 have 1 gig ram.

Anyone know how to fix this?

I got the same memory problem, I run memorytest 86+ v1.65, it give me 6 errors on address 00000000, it is also strange that during memorytest86+ running, it shows ram setting 99mhz (DDR199) CAS 0-5-1, but apparently CPU-Z shows it is 266Mhz with a timing 4-4-4-11. I didn't find any problem during normal usage, although I'v experienced twice white screen during the last 5 weeks that I own this laptop.

Anyone else has run memorytest? Is the error normal?

Well ive seen some users of the 5102wlmi notebook have the same prblem as me...
Ive been playin warcraft 3, and it runs perfect for about 20 seconds...then it "lags" or slowdown for about 5-7 seconds, then it runs fine again for about 30 seconds, and then again slows down...what can i do to solve this? ive tried playin with the 200M drivers, with the 1100 drivers, ive done the FAT32 to NTFS conversion, changed video settings from high performance to high quality, and nothing seems to work...i rememvber that i had the same problem with C&C generals, but then it dissapeared, and now im having it with wacraft 3 and WoW....please help....i thought maybe it was a virus, so i tried removing my norton 2006 and installed McAfee 2007, ive recovered to factory defaults like 4 times now....and it wont stop!!! im going crazy!!!!

I have the 120 gb hdd, 1 giga ram DDR2, ati 1100, camara and mic and all that stuff

Sometimes when I play games, I also get a slowdown for about 5sec and returns to normal within 10 seconds. During slowdowns, in looking at CPU-Z, I saw my processor was running in battery mode (800mhz). Then it went back to normal (1.6ghz). This could affect games, because memory on battery is also clocked down (for me is 200mhz).

This happens more often when I try overclocking the processor from 1.75-1.95ghz. Rarely does this slowdown in games happens when I am at 1.6ghz however....

*My computer seems to have a hard time reading my memory stick pro duo cards with the memory stick pro adapter. The pc can barely read 128mb and the computer slow down and can't read my 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo =(

Any feedback would be helpful! Thanks!

Try switching from optimum performance too maximum performance in the ePerformance bar, down to the right on your screen. Worked wonders for me!! :)
