At Cebit Engadget covered the 8372's which are the Travelmate versions of these Timeline's, but showed nothing of these new consumer Timeline's.

This definitely needs a lot more coverage. Personally, I'm very interested in the overall category of <=14" with Core i CPU and upper-midrange switchable graphics. To the best of my knowledge, the only laptops in this category are the Lenovo Y460, Acer Timeline 3820/4820, ASUS N82, and VAIO Z.

The review unit had an estimated price of $850 for their i5/5470 setup.

If the i5/5650 configuration is $1,000... i'm buying ASAP.

So, will Acer offer a higher res screen or will it be going with the standard 13in resolution?

That and the weight are the 2 major drawbacks of this unit. But, it has great specs and a great price. 13"/I7-620M/HD5650/4GB DDR3/4lbs at $1,000. A Sony Z, configured with an I7 would be over $2,000. 13"/I7-620M/GT330M/4GB DDR3/3lbs. At that price, however, the Sony comes configured with a 128 SSD and can be ordered with a full HD Display for $50 (only not in the US yet :( ). The Sony has the better keyboard and probably better build quality (how well is the 3810 built?). On the other hand, the I7-620M/HD5650 will probably outperform the Sony's I7-620M/GT330M. The Sony, in Premium Carbon or Metal Mosaic is the more elegant business machine.

I could see spending the extra money to get a lighter notebook. The Acer's performance tugs in the opposite direction. Nice to see some competition in the 13" segment.

Anybody who has experience with Acer products, how long before we should look for one of these at retailers?

I have a few things to note
1)I said it cost 1.1K (USD) with education discount so it means without education discount it should cost 1.4-1.5K not 1K
2)There MIGHT be heat issues 5650HD in a ultrathin laptop doesn't bode well especially for Acer.

According to Acer's website, neither of them would be equiped with an optical drive.

It's a pity, I might have to settle with the lack of the optical drive, a lot of new portables tend to get rid of it, well, maybe it's time to make friends with external drives.

Wikipedia claims the HD 5650 has a TDP of 15-19W, so heat shouldn't be that much of a problem.

You can't forget that the 17W TDP of the 5650 and then add that to the 35W TDP of the i5/i7 procesor and you get 52W. I've owned an acer in the past, and they have some heating issues, like the entire thing heats up like crazy. So, I'm not sure how they are planning to solve this problem, but I hope they do, the specs are amazing.

Man, I believe I just found my next notebook!! really, it's almost the same weight as this UL30JT but with MUCH more powerfull components... also in comparasion with the M11x it's so better with lower weight, 13.3'' screen, core iX CPU, ATI card (wich is 40nm and much more power consumption wise)... I will just wait for a review to see if the ergonomics (temperature, trackpad, keyboard) are good for daily use and i'm ready to go...

Yeah, i am not too happy about the new Intel-CPUs with 35W.

The old good Penryns do have a 25W TDP. That's a rather big jump from 25W to 35W.
But there are no real alternatives...

Thats 35W, but remember that it also includes the graphics chip and some part of the chipset... Overall the new processors are significantly more energy efficient than the 25W penryns...

i went to the acer website for the Acer Timeline 3280T...

But i'm quite sad & dissapointed with Acer coz they put in this el cheapo wireless card in this laptop...

    "Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 1000 b/g/n"

This card only works on 2.5 ghz wireless band.... :-( It wont work on a 5 ghz band. So all you people with simultaneous dual band router or even with a single radio dual band router you cant use this laptop on thr 5ghz band. That's pathetic...!!!

Acer should have atleast put in a Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 or a Centrino Advanced-N 6200 if not one with Wimax support....!!!

I mean in this age of dual band routers is it too much to ask for a dual band wireless card in a laptop...????????

Acer comes with Cheapo wireless Modules and standard display.
I guess this is how they can offer better specs at lower prices.
Not that it matters to me.
It is already a bargain anyway.
Acer is not known to whitelist wireless card in their laptop so an upgrade should be a piece of cake.

nobody has really answered this question.....

when would this be available for purchase in the United States?

this laptop looks perfect for me:
    *excellent processor
    *excellent graphics card
    *14" screen option
*thin and looks like a quality build (I really like Asus aside from the cheap plastic feel)
*very reasonably priced if the estimates are correct

Agreed. I'd easily pay a decent premium for a higher res screen. But then again I'm in a niche market, and the majority of people prefer a lower costing laptop.

Personally I don't see the point of high reso on a small screen.
    Here is why:
1)If the screen cracks it will cost a bomb to replace it(if you are out of warranty).
2)For gaming we have anti-aliasing to make up for image quality
3)A high base cost for a laptop may result due to a variety of parts for 1 model number
4)If you really want the screen you can do the upgrade yourself but it is going to be costly.Things like screens are generic and replaceable but electronic components like the boards are less upgradable.

    what is LM?

If it's ultra low voltage I agree Accer could at least offer them in the configure to buy mode...

also, I believe it would be wise to change this topic title to include the model name of the notebook... it's so vague the way it is.

Initial heat benchmarks for the Sony Vaio Z, I7-620M and GT 330M GPU are 39-83C for the I7 and 58-80c for the GT 330M GPU. I would guess that the HD 5650 would operate cooler than the NVIDIA 330M GPU. Sony seems to have dealt with any heat issues from the I7 quite well. This could be good news for the 3820T.

anything higher than 40 C in the down part makes it impossible to work with it over you, like in bed...

how the 2 graphic cards will work in this one? is there a switching button or something like that?

    These aren't ulv.
"LM" are the low voltage processors. These have a 25W TDP and offer close to the same performance as a 35W "M" processor, but give off less heat. They are inbetween the "UM" ultra low voltage found in the Asus UL30JT and the standard voltage found in this Acer.

LOL. Never thought about working with my laptop in bed over my head. Trying to envision that typing position. I was thinking more like having the unit in my lap at an airport. It'll probably spend most of its life on my desk top. Anyway, the temps are measured in the core, the Sony appears to stay cool to the touch and does not get hot. Hopefully Acer will be able to vent its I7-620M/HD 5650 as efficiently.
