But You have discount price Vaios, and You'll have HP Envys, so that evens it up :) (plus You'll definately have the TimelineX modells, it just takes time).

Platinum warranty is what You can purchase for 25.000 HUF (120 USD), it gives a total 3 Years warranty, plus it provides priority service (that's quite important, because in Eastern Europe there's only one official service center, that's in Slovakia I believe, this way platinum gives You the chance of getting Your notebook back in 5-7 days.)

Hm, just checked the Acer website today. Don't know if this has been brought or not (and sorry if it has), but they finally have a dedicated page for the Timeline X for the US!

    Home TimelineX

I wonder when ordering will be available. Memorial Day Weekend?

It's exciting!! We might be having our 3820tg's soon!!!! :)
Would be great if they released them before the World Cup...

    There is no USA there.

Damn, on the Dutch site they so far only claim to have the 4820T version available in a few weeks (ofcourse not an option, since there is no seperate graphics card in there) That's the online one of the Timeline X series that seems to be available.

I need my notebook asap, so I am considering buying it in Germany (all versions available and I have a shipping adress there). I think I'll go for the 4820TG-434G50MN, which costs € 850.

However, the keyboard lay-out is way to different (qwertz instead of qwerty), so my questions are:

    1. is it possible and not too difficult to exchange the keyboard
    2. where to buy such a keyboard
    3. will i forfit my guarantee, opening the notebook?

I would not get too excited yet. There is still no formal anouncement for the US. I am happy to see that we are linked to the new TimelineX ad. Our site still doesn't list the new models.

    hey everybody,
i'm about to pull the trigger on the 3820tg. my indecision is between this two configurations:
    i5 430m + 5650 for 840 euros
    i5 430m + 5470 for 704 euros
i won't be gaming with this. i just want something fast enough to start with some video editing of my freeride footage and photoshop.
is the videocard upgrade in my case worth the 140 euros (180 dollars)?

What kind of program are you using for video editing? If it's a simple program like MS Moviemaker then I don't think it would be able to use GPU acceleration. For Photoshop, if you're using CS4 and above then it does use GPU acceleration for some processes but you'd only ever notice the increase in speed if you're working with large images. These are images that show a progress bar when you're trying to do whatever it is that you do to your images. If you've never encountered that then don't bother with the video card upgrade. Otherwise it might be worth it if you do use those programs quite often.

Does the 3820 come with the switchable graphics? If not, then I think you'll do just fine with the 5470. Unless of course you have the expendable income; by all means go for it!

The 3820TG has switchable graphics (Intel integrated + ATI 5470 or 5650).

Figure into your decision, any increased workload you will be asking of the GPU during its estimated working life. I remember getting my Vostro 1500 and marveling at the speed of my GT8600M GPU. That being said, you have to be doing some serious work to justify the extra $180.

The SSD is a great idea.

Still looking for an 3820 alternative. Has anybody heard something about the hp dv3? I can't find any reviews on it. It is available here with these specs:

    Intel Core i5-520M (2.4GHz, 512KB),
    13.3 HD BrightView LED (1366 x 768),
    4GB DDR3,
    500GB SATA 7200 rpm,
    LightScribe SuperMulti DVD±RW DL,
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4550 512MB (SWITCHABLE),
    WLAN 802.11b/g/n,
    Bluetooth,
    5-in-1, webcam,
    Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit),
    touchscreen.

I can't find any reviews on it, but it seems like a good buy..

The SSD option is worth it. Unless of course you need to store over 60GB of data. I can't go back to spindle hard drives nowadays as my boot drive. Just to darn slow for me. If i ever get my hands on a 3820 the first mod is a OCZ vertex 120gb :) But that's looking doubtful...Since Acer can't be arsed releasing it to the masses.

The ATI 4550 is a very weak GFX unit..At least the 5650 has some degree of performance.

Its a shame the Macbook pro 13' didn't get a decent refresh, then I would think about it. Running Windows 7 of course which is wrong, but hey....

If they had even announced a U.S. release date for these I would have waited, to be honest. I'm happy with my choice but I would have loved a 4820TG with i3/5650 and 8 hours of battery life for ~$800.

Ok, since I need a computer so soon just for one specific event where I'll only need some basic web browsing, word stuff and pictures /movies download from SD card - upload on the web, I guess I'll get a comp with weaker spec, as cheap and light as possible, and with the best battery life possible. Then I can still resell it, or return it for refund (if I use the 21 days of HP for example, should be ok). What do you think about that? Can anyone help me finding such a laptop? (In order not to derail the thread, you can IM your ideas to me, that'd be kind from you :])

So, back on topic, I guess I'll be back waiting more patiently for the 3820tg and the likes in a few weeks :p.

So I bit the apple and ordered an 5820TG with these specs:

Intel Core i5-450M (2.4GHz up to 2.93GHz turbo)
    640Gb 5400rpm HDD
    ATI HD 5650
9 cell battery!! for up to 12hrs batterylife.

    ETA: First half of June.

Price paid in Norway with 25% VAT: 7235 NOK ( 5788 NOK ex VAT).

In EUR/USD that would be (excluding VAT): 938 USD / 738 EUR.

Better yet, get the 160GB version which is faster when writing. Why? Because it has more storage, which means it has the total storage divided into more blocks, so can take advantage of the additional parallelism.

This speedup came with the last firmware upgrade in 2009 so if you get a used SSD remember to upgrade :)

Hey, thanks for the idea. Apparently, they refund 85% in case the device has been used. Maybe if I'm extra careful I can get a 100% refund, who knows :D.

If someone else know another place where I can get a better refund with an opened but almost unused comp, please share ;).

On topic, no new info on the Timeline X today?

3 weeks to Computex - where Acer and Asus can show off more devices that will never reach the US market.

BTW, there is another massive computer fair in Singapore on June 10th - 13th. The Acer is sure to be on sale there in its I7-620M/HD 5650 specs. How often do you have computer shows there?

    Bronsky

Edit: I just found more Travelmates listed on a US retailer's website. :)

ACER AMERICA - NOTEBOOKS Price List as of 10 May 2010

The first Us I7-620M has shown up in a Travelmate 8572. There is also a 14" Travelmate listed, the 8472-6012 with an I5-520M. The I7-620M model sells for $1024.34 and the $I5-520M model sells for $924. I can't tell if these are models with NVIDIA graphics or just the integrated Intel GPUs. None of the models are in stock yet. Although the retailer sells Timelines, none of the new versions are listed yet. :(

Oh, and the 11.6" Travelmate is now listed on the Acer USA product section. http://us.acer.com/acer/productv.do...ctx1g.c2att92=447&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=667431369 They are dribbling their products into the states.

Has anyone had any experience replacing ports on a notebook?

I wonder if it would be possible to replace a USB port with one of those combo USB / eSata ports.

The lack of highspeed transfer is disappointing on these Timelines...

Well, you could de-solder an existing USB port which is soldered on the mainboard and solder a e-sata/usb. The size and connection should be the same. But it's not sure it would work, plus it's very complicated to do (you'd rather go to a specialized shop), and you'd definitively loose any kind of warranty.

EDIT: and why not a hdd dock with Gigabit connection?
@anyone: have you guys experience with that?

Some unknown shop: abbo.no but they raised the price a bit today. https://www.abbo.no/abbo/default.asp?page=vare&ProdusentID=LX.PTN02.188

Their support and service probably suck, but the price difference is so large I'm willing to risk it.

Looked at it, but I dont dare :S the highest reason: they dont have postdemand/COD. Rather pay 150$ more than loose it all.
Regarding the support and service, u can send it to an acer suported shop, the one closest to me is in Halden. 20 min away

Where are guys located, in Norway? These two units you have brought will the have qwerty US/UK keyboards or Norwegian ?

Edit: I'm getting second thoughts about Acers build quality. They are infamous for poor build qaulity.

After using my wifes Acer AS5741G with the i3 core 330m / 4GB. The laptops performance is great, very fast. Good performance vs the cost of it.

However I'm concerned about the build qaulity, this Acer has the same exact style floating keys keyboard and the same palm rest as the 3820TG (in photos). Just larger and with the numeric keypad. I'm starting to doubt the 3820TG's build qaulity some what. As my wifes computer has a lot of flex in the keyboard and the keyboard will full up with dust and crap in no time. Also there is a squeak noise near the hinge on the right side when you open and close it. The screens viewing angles are horrible, one of the worst I've seen.

The screen surround (glossy black plastic) is a shocker for fingerprints, worse than my 6831fx gateway..

Really I don't know now as looking at the 3820TG photos it seems to have the exactly the same materials, keyboard apart from the back of the lid.

Can any owners comment on the new TimelineX's build quality Vs other laptops they have owned?

The factory 2 year warranty is no problems since it goes through acer. It's the 5 year rights to claim it repaired for manufacturing defects (by norwegian laws) that is scetchy since you have to claim that from the seller after the two year acer warranty is up.

    Hey Bronsky!

How well does Your 1410's keyboard resist dirt (if at all). Is it hard to clean, or to keep it clean?
I don't worry about flex, read the 1410 keyboard mod post, have some tape ready in case :D.

All models are available in Hungary (qwertz layout plus special characters) , most of them with 430M+HD5650 combo,we might have a refresh (hopefully 520M or 450M update - fingers crossed). The 3820 is available with the 9 cell battery also.

The 1410T's floating keyboard doesn't accumulate dirt at all. It's now over two months using the 1410 every day for work, taking it with me on the road or using it at home in the evening and it has performed extremely well. I have really grown used to the keyboard. My typing speed has increased and errors are down. It's still not as nice as a Lenovo or Dell but i can live with it. The only thing that ever needs cleaning is the smooth blue top which gets fingerprints from time-to-time.

    Bronsky

@MMMW - lucky you. If you look back at the posts, there are some links to Singapore stores that have the 3820TG. You might check out availability before your friend gets there. BTW, nice friend.
