Sorry for late reply, been busy at work ;)

The momentus is noticeably faster than the default WD 5400rpm drive, boots a lot faster and there is no lag in games when HDD works. Still it is NOT an SSD, game/application loading times are still a lot higher than for an SSD. But it's an good option if you need some HDD space (as for my needs 500Gb is minimum HDD size). It's also less noisy than the WD harddrives, but it vibrates slightly, which can be felt through the wristrest.

Hey OC, I was thinking of picking up the Momentus XT today, but your statement slightly worried me... I really don't care about how fast the bootup is, or other applications. I just want to play SC2 on high details (I'm pretty sure at this time it's the 5400rpm HDD slowing me down),when you say the loading times are still a lot higher than for an SSD, does it still load faster than a 5400rpm notebook HDD, or is it difficult to see a difference? I can only 'guess' that the gameplay itself would be a lot smoother with the hybrid, since there's a ton of information being read when playing games like Starcraft, and the SSD would be able to work it's magic. I guess what I'm trying to ask is this -> Compared to a 5400rpm HDD, in which areas do you see noticeable (positive) difference?

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance :D

[edit] I realize that I'm concentrating on one application (SC2), and realize you might not play games, so if you could just provide more details on your experience using the hybrid, I would appreciate it, thanks again

Weird.. I am playing SC2 with default/stock hardware and did not oc... Catalyst 10.6 thou

I can play on High mode without any latency issue...

But I've only played the game on campaign...

Where does the latency come from? Multiplayer games?

Highly doubt that a better hard drive would make your gameplay experience with SC2 better... just the loading times at the start of the game would be better. The biggest files that the game "reads" would be the texture and object information it needs to display on the screen... therefore the games that "read" the most are probably the games with the best looking graphics. Even then, all this info is put into the ram when the game is loading. Strategy games like Starcraft 2 aren't special because they "read" more from the hard drive... instead they tax your CPU more than other games because of the all the AI involved. Only way to make gameplay smoother would be to get a better graphics card or better drivers or overclock your graphics card (you have a 5650 right?)

Also, the 5650 is significantly better than the 9600M GT.

For the record I am playing it projecting to a external monitor at a resolution of 1920x1080

so if I don't experience "lag/freeze/what have you got" I don't see why you guys does

I get them on multi and single player games, the game will freeze for a second or two, it's very noticeable. I think I have updated all the graphics and Catalyst drivers too, weird :p

Oic, thanks for the info. I'll try to see if changing drivers will help with anything!

MarineX mentioned he's using the 10.6 older driver (10.7 is the newest) so you might want to try the older 10.6. Since SC2 is kind of new, a future driver update might fix the issue.

    No luck :(

I've tried Catalyst 10.6, and 10.7a, and an even older version, all produced the same results: lag.

It only happens when I have my 23" LCD hooked up, and playing at 1900x1200, with settings on medium. My laptop monitor + low settings = no lag issues what so ever, so I guess I'll try some different settings tomorrow, such as laptop monitor + high settings, and then try hooking up the 23" again but with low settings. I am really starting to wonder if I need to get the hybrid drive, but seeing as how someone up top is running SC2 on 'high' settings without overclock is just really making me wonder what's going on!

Try running the monitor on the same resolution as the Acer. Let us know if you have any lag at that setting. Some people have reported an incompatability with their desktop monitor and the Acer. Some, like me, have no problem at all. I have an LG and my GPU does not struggle with 1080p. It very well could be a driver incompatability.

Hey Bronsky, thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely try out different graphics drivers after trying SC2 on 'high' settings today on the 13". Got my fingers crossed!

[edit] I was able to play on med-high settings without connecting to the LCD. Also, when I did use the 23", I used a much lower resolution and was able to play on the same med-high settings. Thanks for helping out guys :D

How do you determine the resolution limit of the graphics on the motherboard ?Everest or something like it?

I try all the different settings :D

In the end, I was able to use low resolution on my 23" LCD (I think it was something like 1280x800), with low and med settings.

    Quick question:

If I have the AS5820TG-5612 with the i3-350m can I swap it with my i7-620m that I pulled out of my Alienware M17x?

    Thank you.

I would use IC Diamond thermal paste when you do the swap. A few of us have noticed a significant reduction in temps, esp. under stress. The I7-620M will run hot, end of story. But, it will probably not run so hot that it throttles. It will just run at the upper end of its temp range.

I'd be interested to see how it OC's in the Acer. There has not been a lot of success OC'ing the I7-620M in the Timelines.

Anyone with the a GMA model play SC2? Wondering if it can pull off low settings at 40+ fps. Trying to decide between the 13.3" or spend the extra $100 and deal with the extra size for the 5650 equipped 14".

Yeah I noticed that after posting. I'd rather not have to deal with getting it shipped and waiting a decade though.

His I5-580M runs at 3.8ghz and my I5-540M runs at 3.7ghz max and optimized at 3.66ghz. We are using SetFSB to OC.

I actually disassembled my unit to swap out the processor and you can read the ID on the clockgen when you do that. That is how I selected the right one. When you get a shareware version of the software (500 yen ~ $6 donation, aob san will ask you to run a diagnostic display and send it to him. He will let you know if he thinks you have a proper PLL. He's not always correct, however. It's confusing. See this thread. http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/513560-possibly-overclocking-unclockable-3820tg.html
