    Hello All,

I just found this thread after the curiosity of upgrading my 7720-6395. Seems like there are a few options out there. I was mostly interested in upgrading the CPU cause now, even though this laptop is just 7 months old, my CPU is the slowest in my house, haha. I don't think I NEED to upgrade, but I was thinking about getting it up to atleast a 2.0 Core 2 Duo. I noticed that you guys mentioned the T7700 which is around a 2.4ghz, and I also saw that the T9300 and T9500 cores are also really good. I don't need to have the best of the best, but I want to know what you guys think about upgrading. Do you still think something like a T7700 is still good enough to update the CPU? I am really looking for a core under $400, but if I can get something decent for less, that would be good.

I do some gaming on my laptop as well, but most of it seems to be things like WoW, and not super intensive graphics, so is the 8400m GS Graphics Card going to be just fine, or will I want to consider the upgrade to the 8600m GT?

Thanks for giving me a Lookie! :D

T8300 should be a good CPU at a good price....

i have no clue about graphics cards... i'd hold off on upgrading until the NVIDIA heat issue is better defined and understood!

    Hello Every one,
I am having same acer aspire model 7720-6395. And after reading that the CPU can be upgraded. I decided to upgrade my acer as well. I have already upgraded bios to 1.43. And ordered T9300 cpu from amazone. Any help if T9300 will work fine?

So I finally got around to upgrading my laptop (I'm still in the process). I've ordered everything and all is here waiting to be put in. So far I've added a second HDD hitachi 320gb 7200 rpm and I've changed out the processor from a T5250 to a T8300 :D.I'm happy to report (for those who haven't found out yet), the 7720-6395 model of this laptop has MXM type gpu connector. I will be upgrading from 8400m GS to a 8600m GT later tonight! :D I'm also happy to report that Acer made upgrading this laptop easier than making cup of noodle! You literally just have to remove 12 screws (four on the cover, four on the cpu, for on the GPU) to get to the ram, cpu, and gpu. And another 5 to get to the HD. SO easy! I plan on buying a 64gb SSD to replace the stock 250gb HD and making the stock HD an external I want those fast startup times I keep hearing about. I have picture of the specs before and after. I will be posting them soon.

    Later days guys!

I was thinking about something else. Since our model has empty slot mini-pcie I can possibly put 64gb run core ssd in there, and install system on it. I didn’t check if there is boot option for mini-pcie yet. Than for hdd install two Seagate’s 7200.4 500 GB each that would make it 1TB laptop. Correcting hdd power options should improve battery life too.
BTW anybody wonder why as7720 doesn’t have raid option?
Another question is if the Acer is going to release as7730 with nv 9300/9600 for us market?

Unfortunately I haven’t found boot option for mini-pcie. As5920 have it but as7720 doesn’t. That’s sucks because both laptops work on the same chipset. As for mini-pcie you can install tv-tuner or maybe 3G HSDPA modem, or if you using Vista turbo memory. I’m starting to look towards as7730 because my as7720 is getting slow with software which I use.

The 8600m gt is making my lappy's fan run nonstop :(. Did this happen to anyone else and how did you fix it? I know its the gpu because I installed the cpu first and did a trial run with the stock 8400m gs and my lappy was so quiet and cool. Then I install this monster and my ram and get a roaring laptop haha. Is there a fix other than taking it out?

I did the same mistake. Fix for it was to install 9600m GT.
Other than that, just check if there is no gap between GPU, BGA and heatsink.

Have you got any link for this 9600m GT ? I would like to introduce it in my 7720-6395. Any link either for bios and blind flash ? Thank you

You will also have to make small cut in you heatsink in order to fit element marked on the picture.

wow - i just found this thread and it's great! i got my Acer Aspire 7720-6395 at the end of 2007 and it was such an awesome deal, especially the Blu-ray player! now it feels like an old horse in need of a new saddle or something.

i've started working some heavy Photoshop files, and the old beast really has to huff and puff to keep up, and now it's even started to crash if i use photoshop too agressively (ie. making lots of little clone brushstrokes w/ a wacum tablet faster than the the system can handle).

so here's my question, if anybody can help me - what's the fastest CPU i can upgrade to? can i use a T9500 or should i go w/ a T9300? i updated my bios to 1.45 and i also want to upgrade to 4gb of ram too. any suggestions for the ram would be really appreciated too.

also, does anybody know anything about the cpu sellers on ebay that claim to have "new" cpu's and send them out from Hong Kong? they all look really cheap ($150 - $200 depending on the item). most of these guys have good feedback too, but i'm not sure i should take the risk. any suggestions?

    thanks!

not 100% on this one but i thing your best upgrade is Core 2 Duo T7250 with the 800FSB. but will do some research for you and get back within a couple of days.

as for the ebay thing, check a sellers history and positve reps/comments before you buy :D

    best of luck
    Phil :D

I run t9300 in mine. When I was upgrading cpu there was to big difference in price between t9500 and t9300 for only 100mhz. 4gb memory is good but only if you run x64 system, otherwise it will recognize only 3gb. I would suggest you changing hdd to 7200prm one.

Everything you need to know is in here. The fastest known working CPU is the T9300. Ram suggestion is like on page 3 of this thread. Ebay is a great place to shop. Do your research and ask questions. I bought ALL my computer upgrades and even my computer from ebay. All in working condition. Check out my signature, those are all my upgraded components. And my lappy recognizes all 4gb of RAM I have in my laptop, I'm not sure if it uses all 4gb, but it see's it. I don't understand why people are so afraid of buying things from ebay.

Thanks for the help guys! I'll probably buy the ram today on ebay. still not sure about the cpu. i saw several different T9300s last week on ebay and i almost bought one, but then i saw the T9500 for almost the same price. is there any reason i shouldn't go with the T9500? also, thanks for the suggestion on a new HDD.

i'm also going to target a few T9300s again on ebay. maybe today's the day to buy a new cpu too :)

Although in theory T9500 should work I think the main concern of the 7720 owners here is that nobody has reported an upgrade to T9500 while T9300 is confirmed to be working great.

From a chart which can be found on this page you need to get either SLAYY or SLAQG - they are both socket P(and you need socket P CPUs). SLAPV appears to be socket M and therefore it's not compatible..

There really isn't a performance increase between the t9300 and the t9500. I did my research after I bought my t9300. If you really want the best of the best for your laptop, then get a x7900. On ebay there around the same price your looking to buy a t9500 for. If I was a total insane person I would totally buy a x7900 even though I just bought a t9300 like 2 days ago lol. I also got my 9600m GT on ebay. Be sure you know that the card requires a mod to your heatsink to provide proper contact. I myself have to find someone with the proper tools to do that for me.

@ATG - Thank you for the links :) I'm still looking and breaking my head, should I go full-in for the CPU, or should I buy other stuffs before that like WD Scorpio Blue 500, 4965AGN, Internal BlueTooth? The money are not falling from the sky nowadays, but I want a playable GTA IV :D If T9500 really is not that much above T9300, than I'll go for the second. Can someone provide some graphics or score of those two :)

@Acer7720-6395 User - X7900 is nice, but it have higher TDP and lower L2 Cache. I can undervolt it a little and I have Notepal Infinite cooling pad so the heat wont be such a problem, but I don't know if my MoBo can handle the extra power requirements?!

I dont think you'll ever be able to play GTA4 above 15fps. Not even with the GTX280M and quad core. The game is catastrophic regarding optimizations for PC. Before I bought the laptop I had GTX285 with Q9550, 8GB ram. The game was playable only at medium settings. Im extrapolating here, sure, but I'll give it a go in 4-5 days (friday, cause im upgrading to a SP9400) and let you know how things are moving on my config.

When upgraded my lappy I bought my components in the order of cheap to most expensive. Its entirely your decision and what you feel you need/want over the other. For performance it would make more sense to upgrade your ram, hdd, and your cpu first and then all the extra crap. And GOOGLE IS YOUR BFF. Search for reviews and benchmarks for the things you want. When it boils down to it, its all in what you can afford haha. As far as the power requirements for the x7900 I don't know either I was just making a suggestion haha, but I do know the lower L2 cache doesn't really make a difference.

I found a T9300 SLAYY on ebay for $209 Buy-It-Now and bought it. I'm waiting for delivery, then I'll have the fun of trying my first CPU installation! Any suggestions that would make it easier?

Also, I upgraded to 4Gb RAM of which my system only uses 3Gb (although it "sees" 4Gb at startup). So far, so good. Photoshop is running only slightly faster when I'm working on large files, but isn't crashing like it was before, which makes me VERY HAPPY :D

I guess a new hard drive will be next on the list... ;)

The 4GB RAM issue will go away when you upgrade to a 64-bit operating system.
    And either get a 7200rpm 320GB or 500GB drive, or a SSD.

You could have gotten your CPU for $29 bucks cheaper had your went with the guy I went through. I posted the name of the seller in here somewhere. Congrats on the purchase none the less. You'll love the 9300. Upgrading is as easy as applying AS5 to the cpu, removing the screws, popping the heat sink off, cleaning the heatsink with a cleaner or 99% alcohol, turning the screw looking thing counter-clockwise to release the cpu, dropping your new cpu in, turning the screw looking thing clockwise, reapplying the heat sink, screwing the screws, turn the computer, and praying to God you didn't mess anything up :D. Simple.

The upgrade is based off the chipset not just the socket it supports.

Check with acer to see what the maximum supported CPU is alloted for that chipset.

P8600 won't work. You'll need to get a Santa Rosa socket P Merom/Penryn CPU with max FSB 800Mhz Examples: T5450, T7300, T7500, T8100, T8300, T9300, T9500. These are just an example, there are more CPUs compatible.

T9300 is confirmed to be working.

    T9500 should work(but not confirmed).

If you can find the service manual, you will find the part numbers for the cable and bluetooth module that Acer uses in this model. However, it's like $50 for just the factory cable if you can find it and there have been stories of failure with the soldered together aftermarket internal bluetooth modules. It would be much cheaper and safer to buy a usb bluetooth adapter.

Do a Google search for "free laptop repair manual acer aspire 7720 blogspot".
