I've one T5200 on the way. The plan is to OC the FSB to 667 by PIN MOD the BSEL1 from L to H. That would gives me a 2.00 GHz C2D, with my finger crossed. Similar trick works beautifully with Pentium M and, hopefully, it works as well for C2D.

Great find Higgie. I wonder if the multiplier lock has anything to do with heat dissipation at higher clock rate. I know Pentium M and C2Q desktop work with this pinmod technique but some won't work without vid mod. The following is the FSB setting map.
    BSEL2 BSEL1 BSEL0 FSB
    L L H 133
    L H H 166
    L H L 200
Usually there is external pull up on BSEL pin so to mod H to L you wire BSEL to ground, to mod L to H you insulate BSEL. Don't wire BSEL to VCC to mod L to H, you end up with a short circuit. Now I have to think twice since disassembling the 3680 appears a daunting task I do not look forward to do it more than one time.

but the T5200 is a merom (not yonah) and intel had made it more trickier to do the pin-mod job in this.. :D

Per wikipedia, SL9U4 support Virtualization while SL9SH does not. SL9U4 is hard to come by though.

OK,it is done. Celeron M 520 out and T5200 in @533 FSB. Decide not to do pin mod after reading the thread Hoggie dig out. It took me 3 hours since I want to make sure it is done right so that I don't have to open it again. Thank you all in this thread for great information.

I end up to open the notebook case again since the PC Wizard shows 55C on my CPU, kind of high for me. Open the case, tighten a few screws, and put it all back. Now it is running at 42C idle and 56C with SuperPi & Youtube running. Maybe there was nothing wrong to start with, but this time I did it in 2 hr. :D SuperPi 2M reports 2m 06s, kind of odd it says finished loop 20 in 1m 32s but reports data differently. I was running SuperPi across the network and that may make a difference. Oh well, this is good enough. Wife probably won't see the difference other than less burning on the lap. ;)

There are plenty of Core Duo and C2D cpu on Ebay for cheap nowaday. Get them shipped in two days. Too bad that pin mod thing doesn't seem to work anymore. :(

There is a "anti-overclocking protection" patent http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6535988.html just to rid the pinmod fun.

I have got a lot of good info from this thread, but I notice several people are looking for disassembly or assembly instructions for the CPU upgrades that are being discussed. I hope this helps. I found the Service Manual for the 3680 which also covers 5580/5570 and 5570z series of Acer laptops. It is too big to upload here, but I found it on Mininova. You will need a bit-torrent client to download it, but it is very helpful, not only for upgrading but for trouble shooting POST beeps, etc.

The manual is very helpful, getting me through the cpu upgrade and I thank the thread for that. However, to upgrade the cpu, you don't really need to take out the Memory, WiFi, & Modem. Do disconnect the connectors though.

So what is the next project to do with the 3680? How about boot from a built-in solid state memory (USB flash or others)? That should boot up lightening fast.

Well....I am planning to try out the 5K500....may have to do a bit of modification for that....and then try 4GB ram on the i943 chipset, with a custom BIOS.. :D....modify some jumpers on the i940 mobo, and then a T7600....and an illuminated keyboard, notebook cooler, 9-cell battery, look for the Acer 5580 i945PM mobo and a nice C2D logo.. :D thats pretty much it for the next 6 months..!! Provided I get someone to fund all my upgrades.. :D

Krayphire,I was just given an Acer 3680 because it won't boot up. When I checked I see there were 2 different 512 rams in it. I ordered 2g of ram from curcial and I hope that works. Any idea's. I also want to upgrade the CPU to the t5300. I have been reading your articles for days now. Can any one tell me where to get a guide to take the computer apart?? I have always owned Dell and I work on them all the time. Had to replace the heat sink in one that wasn't difficult but puttin the key board back was a nightmare. That is the main reason I want a manual.. Any help please or any ideas on why it won't boot up. I know the hard drive is good because I put in my dell and reformated the hard drive to winds vista ultimate. The thing I really question is the ram. The one piece has nothing on it except 512.

to test and see if the RAM is the issue try booting w/ just one piece of ram installed... if one fails to boot or show the ACER boot screen then try the other....

upgrading the CPU is a very EXTENSIVE process on the 3860
you have to take almost every screw out... a total disassembly...

so first i'd get the laptop booting or going to the ACER screen before you get too involved...

the service guide is linked a few pages back.... not sure if the link in the FIRST POST is working now or not... but we can find that for you...

first you need to give us a bit more info on what the status of the PC is...
what happens when you try to turn on the power??
do you see the ACER SCREEN?? do the POWER and/or HARD DRIVE LEDs blink or light up at all?? if so do either STAY ON... or does the laptop just turn it's self off?

    need more data!!!

    Hi,
Well I took 1 piece of ram out and that left 1 512 trying to run Vista Ultimate. It lights up everywhere and the fans come on but just for a few seconds. I can not hear the hard drive spin at all and the screen is black. The harddrive does get hot and I mean hot. I know it will be allot work to put in a new cpu. I let my children take my old dell 8200 and they spilt soda in it. Well I finally got that cleared out and had to replace the battery charger board. I had to take the entire computer apart because it was in the very bottom. The worse part is the crazy keyboard keeping the ribbons in the zif connectors. Its a total nightmare doing it alone. With dell when I bought the computer the first thing I did was go to there site and down load the service manual and print it out. I do that with every new computer. I know the Acer service manual is available through torrent but the last time I used torrent I ended up with a virus and have of my web-sites were showing up in a foriegn langue. And I don't want to get into that again.
Thank You for your help. I really need it.

if you cannot get a BIOS SCREEN or any screen response at all,, then you need to solve that problem before investing in a CPU for a PC that isn't even working...

and the SERVICE GUIDE IS LINKED ON PAGE 1!

i recommend fixing the PC before getting all upgrade happy..
what good is a better CPU if the motherboard is screwd or the BIOS is trashed... it sounds to me like your BIOS is corrupted or WORSE

search using the NBR Forum Search below..

Ohh, the BIOS is screwed up....The mate up there can try shorting the jumper or do a BIOS upgrade the old fashion way, using a floppy drive..!!
If it is totally screwed and won't POST, then there is a way - in which one would need another motherboard and use it to do something to do the BIOS..!! I have read about it, can't remember..!!
If the problem is not with the motherboard, (you can check all parts wit a voltmeter) - then you can replace the BIOS chip also, and get a new one either from Acer or BIOSMAN....

Celeron - low performance, med energy save, hi temp, very low price
Core 2 Duo - hi performance, good energy save, low temp, med price
Core Duo/Pentium Dual-Core - hi performance (20% worse than C2D), very good energy save (about 20% better than C2D), low temp, low price

so.... C2D for very good speed and good battery time and CD/PDC for good speed and better battery time AND low price... :)
    i chose battery time :)

    sorry for my english :)

    my thoughts,

    new laptops attract more chicks!!!
new platforms are gonna have a longer life than upgrading a socket M to it's last possible CPU

but in the end i guess it all comes down to money and what the PC will be doing

hope my lack of wisdom helped

You can probably go for an ultra-portable then or the <14.1" notebooks, with FCBGA CPUs....(you know the C2D Ls and Us)....!!
My dad has the D430 and it gives out a battery life of 3+ hours easily....

Sorry if this has been covered, I've spent two days looking thru this thread and Im so happy someone found a way to make this cheap lappy into something nice. My question is about my chipset. I show to have a I943/940GML. The first page of the guide says the 940GML doesnt support C2D but it say the i943 does. so you can see Im kinda confused.

    How To Identify Your Chipset:

If the Cover for the RAM bay is pulled off on the Ram Bay there is a sticker. The code on the sticker identifies your laptop chipset.

Check out that sticker and see to which of the following codes it is similar....

    Here they are:
MB.TEB06.... If it starts with that it is a 940GML
MB.AZL06.... If it starts with that it is a 943GML
MB.TDX06.... If it starts with that it is a 945GM
