You want the 800MHz ddr2. You have the board with the 943 chipset, which will allow you the a max of 2 gigs of ram @ 533MHz. When I had the board/chipset you have I didn't try to overclock the cpu, but I'm sure you can get better FSB speeds if you do. At some point, you may want to do what I did, and get the board with the 945 chipset (to be able to put in 4 gigs of ram?). If you do, then then 800MHz ram will allow you to overclock to nearly the max (like I mentioned, I run mine overclocked @ 747MHz FSB).

Here's what I got for mine:

Thanks VikingDon, I checked out the overclocking link from one of your previous posts. I'm going to try it. I'm going to order the ram you suggested...Am I ok with 2gb on one stick the way I'm configured now?

I downloaded pcwizard and have been checking things out on this new beast. This thing runs cool to the touch. it starts around 35 degrees and gets up to 43 on one core and 42 on the other. The AS5 isn't even broke in yet.

The graphics appears to be the weak point. Will upgrading from xx05 to xx08 bios allow me to give it more memory? My HW experience says "on 7.9" for all but graphics which says "2.2 on 7.9" (whatever that means)

    One more question: I have Windows7 32 running now. would I notice a difference with Windows7 64?

Sure the one 2 gig stick is fine.

That's about the right temp. The core 2duo has speed-stepping, so it will run cooler @ idle then the celeron did.

You won't be able to put in more ram with a bios upgrade. If you change your mobo to the one with the 945 chipset you'll be able to.
    NEW Acer Aspire 5570 3680 5580 Motherboard MB.TDX06.005 | eBay

I have 32 bit, and have heard the only advantage of a 64 bit, would be if you were going to have more then 4 gigs of ram. Since you're not, you're better off with what you got.

Thanks. I was referring here more to the graphics. Or is it all the same thing? I read on one of these posts that with the new bios, you could assign more ram to the graphics processor.

I'll look. I think it was somewhere between page 2 and 179, hehe. I read all 180 pages.

*found it* page 111, post 1102 in response to 1101:

#1102 "make sure you have the newest Bios ver before you do the upgrade the T7600 will be the best option.
not sure on the mxm slot.

with the latest Bios you will have DVMT in the Bios options this will max out the graphics ram. but this depends on how much ram you have installed.
with dvmt my graphics uses 224ram."

I hope I can still upgrade.

It is so awesome that this thread is still helping people to make this computer into what can only be considered a sleeper beast! Great job to anybody who's helping to contribute now. I haven't had the chance to read the mountain of information you guys have managed to discover, but if you need me to update information on the first post of the thread please let me know. ;)

I just did my upgrade to my previous upgrade. Almost 2 years ago after stumbling upon this thread, I decided to upgrade my 3680. I was able to get my hands on a MB.AZL06.003 motherboard for a decent price and bought a T5500 processor from ebay. I have been using this since then and it has worked out very well. About 2 months ago, I began having issues with my hard drive with bad sectors. I had a spare hard drive that was larger so I used Acronis migrate easy to move from the old hard drive to the newer one and was able to get Vista to work but still had some issues because some important OS files had been on the damaged portions of the hard drive so I couldn't fully repair it with sfc. I had no desire to reinstall and start from scratch so I finally decided it was time to upgrade Windows 7 32 bit as I knew that it would give me a fully working OS. I also decided to upgrade to a 7200rpm hard drive as well. So since I was going this far, I wanted to get a MB.TDX06.005 motherboard, got a T7200 processor and got 2 2gb dual channel RAM chips. First I upgraded to Win 7 32 bit on the spare hard drive. That went smooth and all my errors disappeared. Then I migrated everything onto the new 7200rpm drive and that went well also. Next, the T7200 processor came in and I installed that on the AZL06 motherboard and immediately saw an increase. Next just for kicks I tried to install both new RAM chips on the AZL06 board and the 3680 wouldn't boot. I pulled one chip off and it then booted up fine with only 1 2gb chip. I wasn't too concerned about this as I had a MB.TDX06.005 board being shipped to me. Well that board finally came yesterday so I went about swapping motherboards. Took less than an hour taking my time to get it done and try to get it to fire. So now with the new 7200rpm hard drive, the T7200 processor installed and 2 2gb RAM dual channel chips installed, I tried to get it to boot. And I got....... NOTHING!!!! It wouldn't boot! So I immediately pulled one of the 2gb Rams and tried it again. This time, success. It loaded al the way. Now I was kind of bummed. I went with this new motherboard because I wanted to run Win 7 with 4gb of RAM. Just for kicks, I did a shut down and pulled the 1 RAM module that was in there and instaled my second one in there and the one I just pulled in the slot above it. I just recently upgraded my daughter's 5315 and was able to get it to run on 3gb RAM but only when the 1gb module and 2gb RAM were installed a certain way. On my 3680, even though they are both 2gb, I figured it was worth a shot. Once again, 4gb and no boot. Again for kicks, I tried pulling both modules out and just stuck the second RAM chip in by itself and what do you know??? No boot. So this probably means that this second RAM module is defective. I am doing a return on it and wil have a replacement sometime next week. Hopefully I will then have 4gb's up and running. But now this has me wondering if I might have been able to get the 4gb's to work on the AZL06. One day in the future when I have a spare couple of hours, I may just try swapping back the AZL06 just to find out. I have the unlocked 3508 Bios running on the AZL06 and upgraded the TDX06 to the unlocked 3508 as well. I will say that Windows 7 is very forgiving on motherboard swaps. I remember doing a motherboard/processor upgrade swap on an older XP desktop and that turned into a cluster. I was able to do some remote registry editing and got it to work but never wanted to deal with that again.

But once again, thanks to this thread, I was able to further upgrade my 3680 to be current and plan on using it for quite a bit longer. Thanks again....

The replacement 2gb RAM came today. I took out the 2gb RAM that I had in there and tried with just the new one and it booted fine. So I did a shutdown and installed the other one along with the new one and success!!!! It booted. So now I also have 4gb of RAM even though only 2.99gb is usable.

Wow this thread was not going any where when i posted back on 178 or some where around there. I have a t5600 in my 3680-2611. Sad part is its the 943 chipset. I found the 945 chipset mobo's on ebay for a good price and when i can afford it I will be upgrading. I have 2gb ram, 500 7200 rpm drive and running win 7 ultimate with the bios hack. Now i can one virtual xp on it which you are suppost to. I have two questions for every one in here. ONe has any of you guys had a problem with the left hinge? I had to replace it once when it broke and killed the back plate but now the replacement is doing the same thing. Two with you guys that still have the 943gl do you get video lag in itunes watching a move? I could all ways go SSD but the prive for a 120gb is still to high for my blood.

Last I plan on painting my acer ether red or blue. I'm tired of the grey. Any ways I will keep up on this thread and she what every one else is doing.

I wondered if you'd noticed how the thread you started over 4 years ago, is still going strong :)

TY so much for this thread! If you hadn't created it, I would have probably "tossed" the painfully slow (celeron) laptop this Acer once was. But thanks to you, it's many times faster :) I also learned some "geek-skills" with all the upgrades :)

    Thanx again... Don

Have any of you guys have problems where the left hinge keeps locking up and breaking? I have replaced mine once due to this and the replacement starting having the same issue after a month of use. THe funny part is I do not open and close it all that often.

Actually I have had 2 do that and they were both the left side as well. I thought it might just be me. The last time, I let it go too long and I ended up having to replace the upper screen case. I am starting to experience the same symptoms again. I may just get some spares so if it happens again I am ready. I have found them fairly cheap online....

If you'll see any improvement in speed depends of what kind of upgrade is it. 802.11g offers some 20mbps of real throughput in good signal conditions- if you far from the router or your internet connection is faster than that you will benefit from the upgrade.
Anyway- it's a simple swap, antenna connectors are the same so no issues here.

For all you guys who want more of a boost Here are some GMA Drivers.

I installed these on my friends netbook Msi with a gma x3100 and he gets a gaming system rating of 3.0 and 3.3 for desktop.

This should give a great boost for you guys in conjunction with GMA BOOSTER.

Hi, as my user handle states, I am not savvy with anything computer related.

I was recently given a used/good condition acer Aspire 3680-2682 laptop and I began scouring the internet for information regarding this old machine.

After my stumbling upon this forum last week during my research, I really began pondering the idea of upgrading the CPU & RAM.

However, I did have a couple of questions regarding the upgrade process and that is what brought me to joining this forum.

My apologies, as I am not familiar at all with this subject matter. I did remove the panel on the laptop and found that.....

The motherboard to my laptop is the MBAZL060037201ECA02500 : From what I have read on here, that would mean it can use the 943GML chipset, right?

Also, the bios for the laptop is v1.3505

Therefore, would an Intel T5600 - 1.83/2M/667 SL9SG CPU be compatible? If so, is that a good option for an upgrade? Or no?

As far as the RAM goes, would a pair of hynix 1GB PC2-4200S-444-12 be compatible upgrades?

I have never upgraded a computer in my life and the variations in CPU/RAM is somewhat confusing, as well as the hinging to the components themselves.

I really wanted to be certain as to which specific upgrades were available for this model laptop before I committed to buying the components.

If anybody could/would please spare a couple of minutes to school me on this topic I would be most thankful. Thanks for your time and have a good week, peace.

    - Daniel

    Hi Daniel,
What is the current CPU you have? T7200, T5600 and up to T7600 will work, but T7200 is the best IMHO but if you can get a T7400 or T7600 at a cheaper and affordable price you can go for it, but for normal usage T5600 will suffice and get a SSD and you'll be more happy.

Thank you for the prompt response. The current CPU is the factory installed Intel Celeron M 440 / 1.86 GHz. & the RAM is the standard 512MB.

Okay, if I were to go for one of the above mentioned processors, what would be a reasonable price range for a used T7200, T7400, or T7600?

My primary uses for this machine are word processing, screenplay writing via programs like Celtx & Final Draft, web browsing, listening to music, watching motion pictures, multitasking, and playing old school DOS games via DOSBox.

I have Vista running in classic view and I am making due with the current state of the computer, but at times, it just locks up for several minutes.

I had inquired about the T5600 as I found an online deal for a used T5600 + the (2x) 1GB of RAM for $29.00 + S&H. But hey, if the T7200 is a better buy (or the other ones at a reasonable price) then I am all for looking into them.

Any recommendations on a moderately priced and decent SSD upgrade? If I had more money to shell out I would probably just buy a new laptop.

However, I am opting to upgrade this gift, as the whole process will help me to gain some knowledge about computers, while also yielding a final product that will seem light years ahead of the current state of this machine.

Also, as far as RAM upgrades go, does it have to be via single 1GB sticks of RAM (up to 2GB of RAM)? Or would a lone 2GB stick of RAM be adequate? I ask that as I found a hynix 2GB 2Rx8 PC2-5300S-555-12 for $26 online.

Aside from the compressed air and thermal gel that I will need to buy, the $ available toward the budget of this little endeavor is about $150-$200.

But yeah, thanks again for taking your time to respond, and I appreciate all of the input provided.

    Hi Daniel,
You are restricted to 2GB on memory by the MB/chipset, so you better buy 2x1GB RAM to utilise the dual channel, T7200 is my choice for your CPU as I have compared the prices, T7400 and T7600 are still a bit expensive.
Samsung 830 128GB or Crucial M4 128GB will do a fine job for you, these two are well recommended by many users in this forum for reliability and performance.

I originally scoured the internet for them for a friends netbook its using some o the tweaks and memory allocation that the i-5 intel graphics implemented.

Also has anyone tryed ocing the intel gpu i heard they do it pretty well with gmabooster.

Have any of you guys thought about going with this motherboard for your acer? NEW Acer Aspire 3680 5570Z Motherboard MB.ABV02.002 MBABV02002 SATA (7320) | eBay
It has nvidia graphics, supports 4gb ram, supports pcie wifi cards, and all the same procs as the otherboards. I think it might be better since it has the nvidia graphics card to get better video performance. Some of the acer aspire 5570 and 5580's came factory this way. Its a thought and thought i would ask what you guys think..

Giving this a try, using the Acer Aspire 3680-2022 base, upgrading to the 943GML motherboard, using an Intel Core 2 Duo T7100, will post with the progress on success or failure!

I think that T7100 is a Socket P CPU and your chipset supports Socket M, I would suggest you to double check.

Hi, I have an Acer Aspire 3680-2367, my motherboard says: MBAZLO06 - (943GML).

Can I replace my old Intel Celeron M 520 @ 1.6GHz with an Intel Core 2 Duo T7200?.

PS: I don't know what is the socket type... :/

Thanks for pointing that out to me, I checked again and you are right, i nearly screwed up bigtime there. Going with the 7200 instead. i also found a 5200 for 10 bucks, pulled it from my friend's old laptop, tested and works perfectly so if the 7200 doesnt work out, then i have a backup. Thanks Again!

From the information i was able to dig up the socket type for the MB.AZLO06.001 and MB.AZLO06.003 were both socket 479, but i wasnt able to confirm that with any official Acer sites. If you can determine the socket type, You need a socket type "socket M" to use the T7200. I tried using a T7100, which is socket P, and it did not work, so make usre you have the right socket type.

I am extremely eager to try this. I just bought an Acer Travelmate 2480 for my young girl to play flash games and to stop them trashing my computer/laptop. I just ordered a T1350 from Ebay for about $10 inc. shipping as the tinkerer in me loves playing with stuff. However, before i start, does anyone have any tips on how to actually access the CPU. I've searched around but, all i have managed to find is dis-assembly instructions.

I could take the whole thing apart, but i'd rather not, if there is an easier way. Does anyone have any tips?

    Thanks

Edit - i read through the whole thread.. phew! 184 pages. I see that there is no other way to replace the cpu other than to disassemble the whole thing. I ordered a T5300 after initially ordering the T1350.. so i'll let you all know how it goes once done.

Edit - My T5300 arrived, Upgrade went without a snag.

If this is your model, I guess you could upgrade to any of those C2D cpus you have mentioned including T7200, my suggestion would be to go for either T7200 or T7400 but the choice is yours, however please make sure the chipset model(943GML) is correct as mentioned in the previous post.

If it's T2330 in at the moment, it's a socket P CPU, T7200,T7400 and T5500 will not work as they all are socket M CPUs, you have to open it up and confirm which CPU you have installed at the moment.

    thank you for the reply ellalan;

    just opened it; its a celeron M; maybe Celeron M 520 is a striped version of the T2330 i think thats why its showing T2330; but the rest of the programs Cpuz;auslogics;aida and system utility is showing a Celeron M 520;

also did a research on the my Mobo:MBAHV01001 ; the 4310 and 4710 are using the same model; which the 4710 is using ( T7200/T7400/T7600) on its specs, every place I've visited stated "MBAHV01001:for 4310 and 4710"

    the 4310 on the website states:943GML and 4710: 945GM;

bit confused on this one; can a mobo with the same model number have different specs?

Yes, if it's a Celeron, you can go ahead with any of the mentioned C2D CPUs.

Hey ellalan, I had another nOOBish question for you.

Okay, I am in the process of placing an order for the Samsung MZ-7PC128B/WW 830 Series 2.5 128GB Solid State Drive - 128GB, SATA, SATA III-6Gb/s, Up to 320MB/s, Up to 80K, Up to 30K, 2.5 and I was wondering if there was anything else that I would need to purchase for the installation/mounting process?

Please write me back if/when you can, or if someone else on this site/thread has any helpful information/knowledge regarding this situation & would not mind helping a total n00b out, then I ask that you please consider enlightening me.

I did research on my own by reading various forums which made me aware of the fact that I might require additional equipment for this whole upgrade process of my acer Aspire 3680.

Thank you again for your time, and I look forward to any possible help that yourself and/or any qualified/knowledgeable parties might be able to provide. Peace.

Yes, no need to purchase anything else and it should be OK to place the SSD in the HDD caddy and install the OS, just use the SSD as you would with a HDD, if you want the satisfaction of optimisation, use Samsung Magician 4.0 from http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/MZ-7PC064D/AM
