wimax: how many people actually get this and why?
720p vs 900p: pros vs cons...?

720p = better frame rate on weaker card
900p = more rez, better looking picture
The m14x is a multimedia notebook. I plan to game on it so I went with 720p. If you like movies or pron you may want the 900p.
Good Luck,

pron I like your style bro,
but yeah what he said -
Im confused too...
Im between both screens but i think ill take the 768p for a smooth game play.... Im interested too if exists difference between the screens, apart of the resolution. Differences like angles,contrasts,etc... -
Why not get the 900p and game in 720 if you want, or 900 if you can (if you're gaming older games).
If you can afford it, don't limit yourself to a smaller resolution! -
-
i have the m11x and i love the detail i get on the screen, but this is only 720p...i am a fan of it on this size, but given the larger real estate would there be a noticeable difference or no?
i play movies on occasion, use this mainly for school at this time. i do play games, but not often with this unit, as this was mainly for school anyway.
that said, the reason i am poking into the differences, is that i want to play my games at a good visually pleasing aspect and rez. -
most screens i find, when you order the better rez then adjust to game in a lower rez, the looks take a hit...maybe thats just me.
as for the wimax, is it not just for say using with your cell phone carrier? so you can ride on their airwaves? is that not the only difference between the cards? -
Buy the 900p screen because you can always tone down the setting for gaming, but if you get the 720p screen you can't upgrade it. Get my point?
-
for your purposes, I would highly recommend getting the 900p screen. I'm going to be using it for school as well, and that extra resolution makes it much easier to work with multiple documents. I actually ordered an m14x and I got the 900p screen, it was one of the reasons I chose the m14x over other laptops. -

There's a pretty good discussion about the 900 vs 768 down the page a bit: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...d-more-65-1600x900-instead-1366x768-m14x.html This gives most of the pros and cons (regardless of the money consideration 'cause $75 or w/e isn't much when you're buying a $1400 laptop).
The point I made over there was that many programs and documents just assume you have more than 800 vertical res now. I often run into problems with my 768 vertical res on my current laptop so I went with the 900 on the m14x I ordered. Check out the thread! -
Can you use a regular 3G SIM with the WiMax upgrade?
-
Yes, a game running in 1366x768 on the 900p screen won't look as good as it would on the native 720p screen, however the difference wouldn't be very noticeable.
In any case, the 555M should be enough to handle almost all games at 900p in high detail or better.
I have to say, staying with the 900p screen on my M17 instead of going with the 1200p screen is one of my biggest regrets. I would have loved the extra desktop space, and while I wouldn't be able to play all of my games in 1200p it would be nice for those that I can.
If I bought an M14x (and I hopefully will in the future) I would definitely go for a 900p screen. I'd recommend anyone to do the same, unless they really don't want the extra space on the desktop, and want maximum framerates in every game out there at native res. (I still maintain most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between 1366x768 on a 1366x768 display, and 1366x768 on a 1600x900 display) -
thanks EC...
i will prob opt for the 900p, just wanted additional feedback with the choices and the 555 being the gpu to push the details to the screen. -

The impact at running at less-than-native resolution depends on the panel. I've seen displays that look terrible running at anything less than their native resolution. There will always be an impact though, and it will be noticable, mainly through loss of sharpness and vibrance. If you care at all about image quality you shouldn't ever consider running a game below your display's native resolution.
If/when I order an m14x later this year, it will definitely be with a 900p screen. I want the extra pixels for work/productivity purposes (eg. photoshop) and I'm confident that the 555m will do fine with games at 900p, especially with future driver revisions and possible overclocking. -
This being said, the 555m should be able to handle it. You might end up running a few settings at less than max for a few games while you would have been able to run them at max at the 768 resolution but I don't think that's a big deal compared to the comparatively better experience you'll have with the 900. -
agreed as well on the turn down the rez issue.
and that is why i find it ironic that people say just lower the rez...i guess i am among the few that dont like the downgrade from native rez...
ill stick with 900...
and what about this wimax stuff? -
I always enjoy the extra real estate (screen size) with a larger setting. 900p would be it for me as you can always lower that setting if need be.
-
The 555M should be able to handle almost every game out there in high or above details at 900p, including Crysis 2. -
Thanks! -
i'd go with the 900p screen if u can afford it, you can always lower your resolution if needed and i prefer a nice picture for the stuff i like to do
