The problem is when you click the $1299 machine and add the SSD, the system makes you upgrade from the i5 to the i7 because of "compatibility issues" for $100. THEN it says that the current RAM is not compatible and makes you upgrade to 1600mhz RAM for another $100.
Somehow this gets you to $1629 before the $50 off coupon. Overall it's still an ok price as far as those normally $400 SSD's go, if only you could get them with the base system.

When I did it, the 4GB of 1600mhz ram was $0. But yes, they did make you go to the i7. I got $1529 before the $50 off.

be aware, the ssd that I got when I ordered my Alienware M14x from Dell was a plextor ssd. I was told by the sales agent that it was going to be a samsung and that all alienwares used samsung ssds. However what I got was not samsung, when I asked them about it, they said they stopped using samsung, which is known for its quality and in my mind can help justify the ssd prices at the time.

However Plextor isnt really known for ssd quality as they are just getting into them.

My suggestion is to get an ssd from new egg, tiger direct or somewhere else. I regret to no end ordering it through dell and being lied to and the performance is extremely underwhelming. Combine that with the amazing deals i have seen on some top performing SSDs this holiday season, has me kicking myself for being suckered into by dell/alienware.

When the smartest minds on these boards are urging you to get the base model and build up from there, they arent just blowing smoke up your backside, they are helping you get a killer machine for a better cost, without forking over extra cash to Dell/Alienware for things that can be bought elsewhere for considerably cheaper. There are some things you do pay dell for ( screen ) and some you dont ( ssd ).
