A05 is an improvement, there is no doubt. You will get a bit higher temps (3 to 4 C), but it's not bad at all.

Updating to an official BIOS update will not void your warranty or do changes to the system which might be unsafe/harmful. I'm sure the Alienware engineers have had the A05 on the test bench for a couple of weeks before release.

I'm happy with the bios update. The laptop was on A03 and I was amazed at how loud fan was when just surfing web. Much more manageable now

At system bootup hit F2 to open Bios and it should display it there

I agree. That should be an option. Lenovo did it, so Alienware should be able to as well.

A05 is great here. Only tested in Browsing etc and its much, much more comfortable now.

For the heat, better Upgrade the bios now and burn your machine while its in warranty than later. you cant be serious if you wouldnt want the m14x more decent loud, except you love starting jets next to you :p

for the switchable graphics, i have an thinkpad r400 here and used it the last few years with switchable graphics. what i love about optimus is that you dont have todo anything. it just starts the gpu, in problems manually by context-menu. on switchable you had always to goto tray icon, do a few clicks and then wait for a few seconds till something happened. if any prog (FF, Flash, GPU Rendering in Browser) uses the actual GPU you cant switch. if you dont switch back you draw lotta power. aaan worst of all, since the Release of the R400 (3 years?) theres only been 2 driver updates. drivers for switchable are a pain. a real bad pain.

You shouldn't be gaming on this laptop for long periods of time anyway. For the size of the screen, it's bad for your eyes.

I went from A03 to A05 but did a before and after comparison of CPU temps:

CPU is actually the 2630, CoreTemp didn't seem to get that right.

Maximum fan speed is definitely lower after the A05 update and there are many more speed levels. Somehow, the CPU doesn't seem to be running hotter though, and the clock speeds reported are different between revisions.

Windows Experience scores did not change after the update.

Video switching may have changed as well, previously the screen would flash every time the machine was either plugged in or unplugged from AC, it doesn't do that anymore.
