So I have had this Alienware 14 for 8 months and everything is fine but this throttling issue. It's getting to the point where it drops my FPS from 200 to 70fps. It's SO FRUSTRATING! Anyways, I've been doing my research and I've noticed that I'm not the only one who experiences this problem. I've also found that no one seems to know how to fix this. I have spoken to alienware support about this issue, they sent out a tech and came to my house to replace the motherboard thinking that it was a faulty nvidia gtx 765m. I also reinstalled to factory settings because the replaced mobo still had the same problem.(annoyed by this) Anyways I saw some threads saying that If i get nvidia inspector and raise the limit of the temp to 95 degrees and it should help, well it doesn't do anything. I also tried EVGA Precision X and the same thing still get these crazy fps drops. The fps drops when there is a lot of action going on. So lets say in CS:GO you play on native or a high resolution, once you go into a bloomed smoke grenade FPS drops drastically (50-80fps from 200-300fps) Or even when there's shooting going down it starts to under perform. I did not spend $1600 to encounter these problems, I just dont understand why Dell has these limits on their comps. If anyone has a solution for me please feel free to respond.(this issue is killing me)

what bios are you on?
-
A08, The rep at alienware helped me flash it to the newest bios
-
Have you tried 3dmark or similar benchmarks? Also use hwinfo 64 to see if the cpu and gpu trothling?
-
Yeah I have, I actually have used heaven benchmark since it was free to download and I also downloaded hwinfo64 and also nvidia inspector. I also read this one post on how Dell limits their laptops/pc to certain temps. Apparently the alienware 14 is suppose to be locked at 63 or 66 degrees. I noticed that when i ran the benchmark that the temps would never rise above 63 degrees Celsius And if it were to go over 63 degrees it would start throttling. The gpu clock would go from 901MHz to as low as 450MHz.

Try EVGA precion x or msi afterburner for gpu. Clock down a bit and see if that helps

What temperatures are you getting? -
The stock AW 14 vbios is a throttling mess. If you flash it to an unlocked vbios and you won't have to worry about that anymore. With an unlocked vbios you can overclock further as well.
-
Where would I be able to find an unclocked vbios for Alienware 14? And is this safe to do? Thanks
The GPU tempss clock at 63 degrees Celsius, I haven't once seen it go any higher. -
Curious to know too where I would find an unlocked vbios for the GTX 765M. Any good guides and tutorials you all suggest?

Since I have gone to BIOS A08 and Nvidia drivers 337.50, I am sure the GPU clock speed does not go over 600MHz, not even for a second.

As Wattser93 said, the stock Dell vBios throttles a LOT as Dell made it too "safe" when the card can do much better. I'm not on A08 as I felt no need to update to it as it only added support for new cpu's, nor do I have my 765m board installed yet, so I can't comment on wether or not A08 has anything to do with throttling, but I doubt it.....it's more than likely vBios related.
For those looking for an modified vBios that does not throttle and can be overclocked as pointed out above, see here: NVIDIA Kepler VBIOS mods - Overclocking Editions, modified clocks, voltage tweaks
Thanks to svl7, the modded vbios allows the 765m to run as it should have been able to do, but Dell kinda crippled it a bit with thier vBios.
A guide on how to flash can be seen here: [GUIDE] NVIDIA VBIOS flashingCptXabaras and mikwarleo like this. -
@steviejones133 thanks for this. For all the people that are more visual learners, do you think you can upload a quick video tutorial of NVflashing any GTX M card? Ill be sure to give REP points if you can do this. Thanks again.
I was able to mod flash the GTX 765M on my AW 14. The core clock no longer has the 135+ limit overclock which is great since temperatures were only in the mid 60's when I maxed out the core clock at at 135+. SLV7's modded bios can make me push the GTX 765M past the 135+ limit and still get reasonable temperatures. Just have to watch your temps and be reasonable with your overclock. Also the memory clock no longer has the 135+ limit overclock as well and there is an option to change voltage within NVIDIA inspector.
BTW, is it okay to update the NVIDIA driver on the modded bios? I'm still on the NVIDIA 311.48 driver.

When on BIOS A08 seem to be an issue running slower than stock, to way worse in many ways. Since moving to A09 the throttling seems not so bad, and is able to hold normal clock speeds for a short time, although I haven't had time to fully test it, certainly better now as before was practically unplayable. Could be better though.
Pretty ridiculous a gaming machine like this even has a problem, it has decent cooling setup. I have seen lesser branded/class machines still hold clock speed up with similar spec hardware.
I know is not meant to be overclocked, although would of though it could take some overclocking. I overclocked by 135MHz, and in a few seconds flat was ramping down to ~400MHz. Stupid really as it could handle it no problem. I tried 100MHz overclock, and within about a minute was down clocking to ~400MHz.
Really based on the small overclock above, how reliable is the stock clock if it throttles at a small bump in speed.
Not that happy with the Alienware 14, it does not get used much as every time I go to use it, I end up disappointed with the throttling.
I wish Dell would listen to their customers, and fix this crap up. I don't need to overclock, but I would like to be able to run at least stock speeds without slow downs.
There is utterly no need for this, change the limits on the BIOS and make the machine work instead of being a pack of stubborn idiots that will not back down on corporate policy! -

extra answers which are not available in screenshot;
i opened the case and put another 12 volt core 2 quad extreme fan on top of the fan. it is on the hdmi side of the notebook on the back corner, focus your fan on this place, or leafs of fan.
you can never achive 9500 phsics unless you do this.
if you limit your cpu to 3ghz case closed, 3.1 case open you can hit 8400
no easyly available laptop cooler can cool alienware ! just open the case and put it on a higher level than table op put it like a open book to the side with open case.
you can't stop throttling on overclock unless you lower the degree of the chip.
core 2 quad extreme had a bios setting which you disable (actually disable them all) and you can get rid of throttle nightmare
stop using other overclock softwares and flash v bios adding
nvflash -4 -5 -6 biosname
with -4 -5 -6 it force overwrites old bios. in my case it said it is different id so it can't
what i share is a 1 week work please tumbs up!
