Can anyone with experience with both platforms tell me how much quieter or different sounding the fan sound is with the Alienware 14 vs. the M14x-R2? I have to limit frame rate, etc to keep my M14x-R2 down to the mid-range speed when my wife is around... was wondering if the Alienware 14 was substantially improved or not... the NBR review doesn't make this clear.

From the videos I've seen, the AW14 does a lot better than the previous M14x R2, as long as there is room for it to breathe beneath the laptop. The fans aren't as loud, but they're not quiet either - that's what I heard.

Can anyone who upgraded to the new 14 from the r2 share some details about the increase in performance?

The hard drive is the problem I had with the AW14. Also when gaming, it can sound like a jet engine. I haven't had enough M14x R2 lengthy gaming experience, but I thought overall it was much more quiet.

The AW14 is that loud? Hope not. If it is, maybe a re-paste would help.

I think so. I honestly don't care how loud it gets when gaming so it didn't bother me. But I was a little surprised how loud it got full speed.

Outside of full speed its not bad.

The new AW14 is not that loud compared to the M14x R2 and I know this by experience because I had both of them. I remember the M14x R2 sounding like a hairdyer or jet engine taking off as soon as you enter benchmarking or gaming reaching 50+ decibels and has that annoying hairdyer sound to it and the new AW14 did not have that and it has a way different tone to it and not as annoying as the R2.

Just a note I'd like to add to this conversation: With HWINFO64 (I believe that's the program), you can control the fans and prevent temperatures from getting too hot by enabling the fans to kick on earlier. Some members here have said they do this with their AW14 and they rarely see temperatures above 75C, which is impressive for a 14" laptop.

I may have gotten the name of the program wrong, if so, please correct me. ;)

    That's true!
Besides that, I would like to add that I've worked and gamed on both of them and the new vents design on the AW14 makes the airflow better and therefore quieter.
