ecently i just bought my Alienware m14x with the spec below
I7-2670QM 2.2 GHz
8GB 1600MHz
GT555m 3GB (v285.62)
1600x900 HD
Window 7 home 64bit
Here the problem.. i searching around google and i found that alienware m14x got problem while trying to change setting in GTA4 due to GTA4 detect Intel GC instead of my Nvidia GC. Its show my laptop only have 117mb resources and unable to let me change those setting.
And I try to find any solutions to fix this prob. I updated my driver version to 285.62 and whitelist the game and still cant change the setting in GTA4.
Other game run fine with Ultra or High settings.
can anyone help me?

have you tried 295.18?
think im on a similar situation as you are but am not really into gaming so am not concerned about game issues.
my concern is that the resolution i should have is 1600x900 which i see is reflected on Intel Graphics and Media control panel.
However, when i check my Nvidia control panel, the only screen resolution i see is 800x600!
i think ive this gives the premise that unless needed, i.e. gaming the GT 555M does not kick in? so therefore as i am not a gamer, id only be utilizing the intel graphics card? -
