Ok so this is my previous thread..
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...ed-problem-ah-here-we-go-again-wont-boot.html
I had issues booting my M14x laptop up after i installed my SSD, i always got this message "DISK READ ERROR PLEASE PRESS CTRL + ALT + DELETE TO RESTART" after restarting like 10 times it finally boots.
So what could be the problem ?
Well from NBR Users input i discovered that its either the SSD or the Laptop ( most likely the mother board )
So i have had the SSD replaced and the Laptop replaced... after about 2 months of waiting for everything to arrive i put the SSD in and guess what ... DISK READ ERROR !
The Weird thing is.. it works great when i first turn the laptop on after installing the SSD.. i will install drivers fine, but what i always find is that i will leave the laptop over night and when i wake up i power it up and get the this message ( this happend on both laptops and ssd ) So i have no idea what changes over night !
To aviod swearing my head of i will just say this.... Alienware has turned out to be a totally useless and disappointing... I had an Alienware Desktop a few years back and i loved it never had any issues, it just seems like they have messed up the M14X completely.. To be honest i just want my money back now, but i cant because ive had this one for like 36 days![]()
6 days out of the returns policy.
Further more whats up with the "we never said sustained SATA 3 speed" What a joke, does that meen that some times my battery wont work because they didnt mention sustained battery usage ?!
Well this laptop cost me £1400 and the SSD cost me £200.. so thats £1600 What a waste of money ! I would have been better of buying a £200 laptop
PLEASE PEOPLE DONT RUSH IN TO BUYIN THE M14X ! IT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE AN AMAZING LAPTOP BUT IT NEEDS A LOT OF WORK YET
But anyway here is my questions... Where do i stand legally on getting refund if we dont get sata 3 speed, my laptop does not boot with SSD and some times freezes on windows starting screen ?
Can i get a dell tech to fix my computer if i have put my own ssd in ?
some people may say take it out and put the normal HDD in but then the dell tech will not be able to see the error messages...
Please any advise ?
-
Hmm, seems like a dud. My M14x works fine though and many others on the forum have fine M14x's as well, so I don't think it's good consumer advice to not buy a laptop just because 1 failed.
-
Well, I have an OCZ Vertex 2E 120GB in my M14x and I never had a problem... Runs fast and smooth.
-
Well there are a lot of issues with it still for example i bet your not getting sata 3 speed and fan is still OTT
And i have had 2 of these laptops now and they have both got the same issue.
Dont get me wrong its a great laptop im just saying Dont buy it now.. just wait for a bit -
So your laptop was broken
so youre starting a thread to tell everyone not to buy it
:X -
Im not saying dont buy it, im saying dont buy it right now.
And i am also asking for advise :S -
sorry to hear about your troubles. somehow i think i'm one of the few people on these forums with an intel 510 ssd and no issues.
-
Sorry to hear the list of problems you've had, considerable bit of bad luck there. I've had no issues with my M14x, the first Alienware laptop I've ever had, and the only exception is that my heatsink and thermal paste was replaced by Alienware, but the phone call was painless, they came out within two days of the phone call, and were done with the repair within 30 minutes.
In my opinion your thread title could do with a slight re-word, it gives the wrong impression considering many laptops on this forum of the M14x to my knowledge are working, just the odd one or two occasionally appear. Anyway, good luck with whatever your intentions are and I hope you get these problems sorted eventually (I didn't read your entire first post, but I did read quite a bit of it, was rather long).
-
first alienware ive had and i willcontinue tostick with it. love my m14x. amazes me to be honest. sorry about yours dude
-
Thanks. I am not going to buy an Alienware. All of my money goes to a Macbook Pro. That is my final decision after reading this thread.
-
Shin its a great laptop just hold fire on getting it for the moment, these problems will eventually get fixed lol
but they are both good laptops -
Such a huge post for a single problem with the SSD you are trying to install.
Try a different SSD. Besides, you don't need a SATA 3 to have a great experience on this laptop. I'm using a Vertex 2, and this laptop is rocking. Honestly, i'm glad I didn't get a SATA 3 and got the extra space on a SATA 2 drive. -
You can blame it on Dell for buying Alienware and taking it over with their ways, or you could blame the manufacturers of the components, or you could blame the UPS man. But ultimately, Dell is and never will be a perfect company. All companies have their flaws. Don't buy an Alienware again. Thats my advice for you. If you've already had a bad experience, whats to stop you from getting another? I personally own a M15X and in no way hate or despise Dell but am disappointed as to what has happened to the Alienware brand.
Your laptop is still in warranty however and if you think its a motherboard issue than you should give Dell a call.
Best of luck to you -
>says hes not buying an alienware
>hes getting a mac

Am I the only one who sees the irony of a thread telling people not to buy a product that the original poster has a picture of for his avatar and in his signature?
-
That post was awful. I understand you're mad because you got a bad computer as are others I'm sure but don't scare off other people from what could possibly the best laptop they've ever gotten. Your m14x isn't working that's a bummer ya but you can send it back in and explain the situation. My m14x works great aside from an audio problem but that was user error but aside from that I'm pleased with the laptop as are other people. The laptop is mass produced which means that in the bundle there will be a few bad ones and unfortunately you got one of those. Doesn't mean the laptop all together is terrible.

I love my alienware M14x as a fact I am using it right now, it's very powerful and I have had only 1 problem it was the screen and it was out of the 30 days it was I think 32 or 34 and dell was nice enough to give me a whole new one with a upgrade as for the fans I am having no problems it's flawless and when the fans do go on for a random reasons its only a couple seconds and my cpu is Overclocked. I love the alienware M14x no regret buying it thank god I didn't buy that Macbook Pro 13" I wanted so bad it's very overpriced but so is alienware but it has better specs come on really 1249.99 for a DUAL-CORE i5! ARE U KIDDING ME!!!!
anyway's my point is that the alienware M14x is not always perfect but if you get the right one out of the batch it's flawless and even if you dont dell's customer service is AMAZING! So I recommend it very much!

It has to be the particular brand/model of SSD you're working with since countless posters have had success in installing an SSD of their own in their M14X.
Should of taken a walk outside and grabbed some fresh air before making this threadI came in here expecting a horror story (something like 10 failed components, 3 RMA's, etc.)
I'd say sell the SSD (or return for refund) and make a thread asking what SSD's (name/brand) people are using and pick one of those up since it's guaranteed to function with your M14X
Good luck!
Edit: I believe you can only get a Dell technician to install a component IF you purchased the said component from the official Dell website. That's what I read sometime last year regarding GPU upgrades in a M15X thread. You may want to confirm this information with Dell first. -
this is probably useless but i'm going to state it anyways....
I ordered my m14x the first day they came out, recieved it in less than a week.
Other than the whole issue with high-performance/battery/shutting down on BIOS A01, I have not had any problems what so ever.
This has to be the best damn laptop I have ever owned. I have 2 hard drives in it. The processor overclocked as mush as it can go , IGP overclocked , and the GPU overclocked high and I have yet to see it overheat or shutdown or BSOD or whatever else you think...
Unfortunately there is always gonna be one or two that come out faulty and it's bound to happen to matter what.
* Just replace the laptop, one call and it shouldn't be that hard. Honestly. -
Man... I am regretting getting this Alienware M14x ... approx one week later ... mine had it's motherboard and speakers replaced to fix a hissing sound ... and also the LCD needs to be replaced because there's a scratch!!!
poor quality! Regretting it ... sigh... -
I really still want M14x, but I must have to not buy this laptop after reading this. Everyone says Macbook Pro is the safest best for the power portable laptop. I already spent the money for the Apple product. That will be my first ever Apple computer in a long time.
-
Power portable? It's only portable IMHO. Macs should not be used for medium power tasks, only light duty tasks. Since you have already bought the Macbook Pro, you should have got the alternative to it: The M11XR1. Bigger battery life. Better performance. Have fun with your Mac though!
-
Well aside from having had zero issues with my m14x, I have to say I am a bit confused. Of all the posts and threads discussing technical issues with the m14x, almost all of them are about the device they received.
Your complaint seems to center around hardware you added after receiving the device. I can only hold Alienware accountable specifically for what I purchased when they shipped me my laptop. Anything you add after market, well your mileage will always vary there. That is ever the nature of the beast in the pc market.
As to the "i will buy a macbook pro" clown.....what can I even say to you? Enjoy your macbook I guess. Meanwhile I will continue to enjoy playing brand new games on my system smoothly, without having to run multiple os' -
Yeah i am sorry for opening this thread... i was so anoyed... i got my first M14x that was not working, after spending about 3 weeks arguing to dell reps that never phoned me back i finally got a replacement arranged. i get the new laptop and it still doesnt work, so i think fare enough its the SSD then, i send that back for a new one ( about a month later it arrives ) and guess what its still not working. 2 Laptops later and 2 SSD later = FAIL + annoyed

M14x ( Problem ) Check out my boot time ! ... What a Joke‏ - YouTube
heres my problem ( happend on both of my M14x ) -
If the SDD giving you prob then go for HDD instead, and yes I know the reason that u go for SDD since it is faster, but tbh How fast? For me If it is 15sec - 30+sec faster in term of launching and loading games, then it worth an upgrade, if not, then i can wait rather than spending a lot more $ and resulting in prob like yours.
And as many poster here said, there are also many people here got SDD install, and they dont have any problem at all, so the problem is that it is perhaps bad luck for you.
Overall, for this laptop, I think it is the best 13" - 15" range of all other laptop in term of performance (Except M15x), though it is bit overprice, but it worth the unique design and lighting.
-
Count me as a guy that loves his m14x. No issues.
-
Paddon, did you try the firmware update on your Vertex?
I did on my Agi 3 and never had a problem after, running full sata 3. -
All I can say is DON'T GET A MAC...
Yea I don't see whats wrong with the m14x 0_o maybe you just got unlucky? It's not like your the first person to get a dud. -
this made me lawl for a while. -
The thing is that I don't want to buy a M14x that only lasts two weeks of enjoyment, then I will have to wait for a month or more for the repairment. I really like the model, but I only question at the reliability. Apple Macbook Pro is superior in the reliability and performance to the Alienware. Again, thanks for your thread to finalize my decision to get the Macbook Pro. It will arrive tomorrow, so I can't wait to experience my first Apple computer.
-
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!? WHAT HAVE YOU DOOOOOOOOOOONEEEEEEEEEEEE!? -

Ask Ars: Do solid-state drives cause problems with sleep mode?
The user-posted comments in the thread linked above are also an interesting read in addition to the main article. Sorry if this has been posted before. -

Haha you can't really argue with someone that has gotten themselves a mac
You ppls can do whateva you want and enjoy your decision i guess
-
M14x also has Sandy Bridge Core i7, and they also come with i5 as well, and I dont have the SDD problem because I dont have it install on mine, and now is my 4th week of use, no problem at all except for the subwoofer blown. -
A blown subwoofer? That'll be on the list of my reason to avoid Alienware. Thank you very much. For the performance, you have to look at the benchmark result - not reading the specification. Google is your best friend, bub.
-
what a funny thread
I have never seen that somebody says Apple Macbook Pro is superior in the performance to the Alienware
Even in a country having 1 billion people with low IQ,nobody would say that -
this apple dude is making the MBP sound like it dropped from heaven without a single problem....well just as we are discussing the issues related to the M14x here on this forum, let me link this apple guy to reality...
MBP i7 w/ sandy bridge over heating issues (2011 model):
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2764570?threadID=2764570&tstart=30
MBP 2011 15" and 17" "HARD FREEZE" problems under heavy GAMING load:

new macbook pro 2011 weak and dropping wireless connection:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/15176057?tstart=0#15176057).
these are only a few of the millions of threads online that outline the various problems with the new MBP. Also, after reading some of the user comments in the above linked forums, I am seriously glad I chose the M14x over the MBP. Namely bc most of the M14x problems here occur after the user has tweeked the HDD or installed some secondary, out of factory device (at which point you are in uncharted territory and a lot of problems are possible) However, with the MBP user problems, they seem to be untouched and out of the Box issues which is honestly concerning.....butttt what do I know...have fun with your new MBP -
I think your problem is somewhere between your desk and your chair...
-
BTW shin_akuma....if you follow those links and read the comments regarding the MBP issues....a lot of people claim to have 2 weeks of initial problem free use, and then after that, they experience HARD FREEZE issues and other problems....just pointing it out since you were bagging on the M14x supposed 2 week life span....kinda ironic LMAO
-
Hey dude. It's meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! Dior.

M14x Benchmark Result:
Laptopmag's M14x Benchmark
MBP 15" Benchmark Result:
Laptopmag's MBP 15" Benchmark
I ask you for proof, and here is my proof, clearly, M14x pwned MBP 15", I also read the spec they chose, it really hard to find the exact same spec between the two, but if you look the RAM, MBP can only go up to 8GB (1333Mhz) while M14x can go up to 16GB (1600Mhz), and MBP's HDD speed is 5,400rpm while M14x is 7,200rpm. People always said the bigger the laptop the better the performance, but in this case, it seem to let the smaller one owned the bigger one.
The price of the duo is similar but as you can see AW seem to beat Apple in many ways. You pay the same price yet one get a better hardware and has higher upgradable rate than the other. -
Don't let one guys bad experience make your decision for you. While I cannot recommend alienware I definately do not recommend apple basically they are fine for music and graphic design but as far as gaming they have compatibility issues.

Review the forum rules... Trolling will not be permitted. We have a Mac forum - this is not it.
