Using a modded .inf file, I updated the drivers on my 3.0GB GT 555M video card to 280.26. I used Driver Cleaner before I did so, and removed everything NVidia. Now every game I run out of Steam plays fine (and I'm getting better and more stable framerates), except for one: Bad Company 2 won't even launch. The screen goes white for a second or two, then nothing. It won't even get me to the main menu. I also tried running the game directly as an administrator, and no good.

I don't want to roll back to the stock drivers, but I play BC2 more than anything else combined. Any thoughts?

Go to your "Documents", open "BFBC2" and delete the "settings.ini" file.

start > control panel > system > advanced > performance settings > make sure "Enable desktop composition" is ticked or

turn on "Adjust for best appearance"

the game apparently wants to turn it off, but if its already off it goes grey screen also make sure you have DWM (desktop windows manager) turned on.

this was posted on the official forums.

Try to "Verify the integrity of game cache" in Steam.
If that doesn't work then try deleting the whole BFBC2 folder in Documents.
(I think you'll lose your single player progress if you do this.)

Enable desktop composition' was checked, but I flipped it to Adjust for Best Appearance.

I'm also verifying the integrity of game cache. Will keep you posted.

Thanks so far for your help!

I've tried everything you fine folks mentioned, but no good. I hate to have to roll back to the stock driver (thanks for nothing, Dell), but I may have to do so.

Try update to the latest beta version, like 280.27 or 280.38. And for those betas, you wont be need any modded .inf.

    nVidia Beta:

    280.27
280.38 <- This one is built mainly for BF3 Beta.

Thanks for the link. The new BF3 beta didn't need a modded inf, like you said, but my framerate was less than 10 in BC2, so I went back down to 280.26. I'll wait until it gets out of beta.

And I found the issue! I went into the Settings and instead of deleting them, I changed the 'DxVersion' from 'auto' to '9'. Works fine. Although there's some weird strobelight thing going on in the sky sometimes, but I'll dig around and look for an answer there.

    Thanks again everyone.

EDIT: Fixed the strobing. Settings, changed 'Bloom=true' to 'false'.

Ah, I think I know what your problem was.
I think you installed the new drivers without restarting you laptop. And this will cause BFBC2 to run on the IGP (I had this today too and this explains the low framerates).
BFBC2 thinks your laptop uses the dedicated GPU but it doesn't. So BFBC2 sets the DirectX version automatically to 11. But the highest version the IGP can handle is 10.1 (I think this explains the startup problems).

No, I rebooted. In fact, I used Driver Sweeper to clear out everything, rebooted in Safe Mode, ran the install, rebooted, then the install finished, then rebooted again. But as long as it works now, it was worth all the restarts.
