Hi guys, I was going to buy an m15x but after seeing everyone here tell me its outdated technology and EOL product I went with the m14x
I managed to get a really really nice one, 3gb gt555m, i7 2720, 6gb ddr1600mhz, soundXblaser, Nebula red, 920p 1600x900 hd
I'm in college but game as well. This will be my primary computer now. Is it a good idea, to get a HD monitor flatscreen to plug into when I'm at home for a nicer game experience?
...or does it make sense to maybe get an m17x or Aurora desktop for home use? I know it sounds crazy I just bought an m14x but I just got research money and I get straight A's so I wanted to treat myself.

A nice external monitor could be nice. If you got like a 23'' 1080P with high contrast, it'll be much better than your laptop screen, but using that will drop your FPS a little.
I have a desktop that's 3 years old now (i7 920 and GTX 260) which outperforms my M14X by alot in games. The M14X can run games well, but it just can't compare to a desktop. If you really want to run all the new games on high with over 40 FPS, you could build your own desktop (or buy an Aurora). I usually don't recommend buying desktops because you can easily build one with top quality parts for hundreds cheaper.
In all honesty, I don't game that often (maybe 2-3 hours a week) and am in college too. I'd rather save the money for a car or some future big purchase down the road when you graduate. Your M14X is awesome - I suggest you just keep that for at least 2 years before upgrading. Just get a nice pair of headphones (like the Audio Technica M50s), a good gaming mouse, and a nice monitor and you're set.
Well, gaming might be a lot more important to you than it is to me, but that's just my opinion. -
i never owned an m17x, however strictly comparing the two for your purposes, I would suggest saving the money and staying with the M14x...I mean barring any defects or problems (which should be fixed or replaced by the 1yr warranty) you will be very pleased with your M14x and its versatility and performance...you would be better off getting a nice HD monitor for home use

If you got the cash and want something to game on at home get the Aurora.
Yes you can buid one for a little less, but then you got a dozen or so warranty's to deal with. You will never regret buying an Aurora or the ALX awesome gaming system. And check the Outlet store for one very nice discounts on one there.

Just wanted to point out that the 3 GB card is useless pretty much over the 1.5 GB one, it would've been a better idea to get an SSD or faster CPU. And there is no 920p screen, it's either 720p or 900p.

I would keep the m14x while your in school, it's got the battery and still is a powerhouse. IMO anything after the m14x you'd be better off saving up for a nice gaming desktop. The m17x and m18x are beasts, but personally at that price and lack of portability I'd get an Aurora or something like alienwolf said. To each his own! And thought I might add your a lucky guy...I'm waiting for my m14x to get here hopefully before school starts haha
