    Hello,

Guys, I just received my Alienware M14X R2 today, and I upgraded the stock ram 6GB, to 8GB, by removing the 2gb module and replacing it with a 4GB Corsair Vengeance memory ram. I checked the system RAM speed using CPUZ, and it is only running at 665mhz x 2 speed, 1333 mhz only! The system bios version that came with my Alienware is A10.
    Please help me :(

So have you entered the bios and try to manually set mem speed?

I entered the BIOS A10, I couldnt find the option to set it manually. Can you guide me through this? :(
I have 3 problems with this unit already. One is the RAM, the other is the "V" button on keyboard being a little bit slanted. The last was a weird bright pixel on the bottom right side of my LED. Can only be seen when its on white page, but when its black page, the bright pixel is not noticeable.

Sigh, lets get the RAM settled first. How do i set it manually?

I tried it at the overclock feature, set it to 1600 mhz manually, but it still showed up 665 mhz x 2. :(
But when I put back the stock 6gb ram, it is running at 1600 mhz. why?

First off, make sure you profit from all the information collected by those before you:

Now, the normal bios has no option for this, but the unlocked versions may:

Unfortunately I don't own the machine, so I can't help you much more than this.
    Good luck.

Regarding the pixel, that's either a stuck (flickering) or dead (bright on one color permanently or not lit at all) pixel. Stuck pixels may fix themselves over time, or when massaged / tapped. Dead ones, no. Check if your warranty covers this.

maybe the ram timings are different for each stick and running one of them out of sepc is causing them to downclock?

try setting them manually to the higher timings of the 2 sticks.

the lower the timings the "faster" the value so by setting them to the higher of the 2 sticks you will make sure they both are stressed to at least their rated speeds and not overclocking them.

the timing should be listed on the lil sticker on each stick, if not you can try to look up the model online.

Thank you, i have decided to return the memory sticks :(

I have just discovered another problem with my new system. The backplate screw, one of them, does not have a spring and a small metal plate that holds the screw onto the back plate. the other has a spring and its held onto the backplate. I am really disappointed with my system after waiting for so many days and came out so many problems.

    1) Pixel problem
    2) Ram speed (probably my fault, but I am going to stick to my 6gb I guess)
    3) Defected, slightly slanted "V" button on keyboard
    4) One of the screws on the backplate is not attached to the backplate, no spring as well. The other one is fine.

Called Dell, and they suggested me to return it. I told them why dont they just send me a technician over and rpelace the back plate, but the person I spoke to said I have to pay. The only option I have is to return it. Or pay for the technician to come over with a new plate. Gosh.

    ouch...

dude i feel you. i am NOT a fan of Dell/Alienware support. in the end they did make everything right in my situation. the tech that came to my house was a real cool guy that knew what he was doing but i have heard bad stories. including my brother and one of my close friends.

if i was you. i would return it and get a new one or something else altogether.

    my rant thread...

Yeah, I will return this and get a replacement, possibly giving them a call tomorrow since it is already closed. It really sucks that I have waited for so long, and finally arrived but with defects. And it will take me another 2 weeks for the new unit to arrive. Which means, it takes a month + to have a good perfect working alienware. Being said that, it may not be necessary 100% perfect for the next new unit coming over. But I really hope for the best. They agreed to let me swap the current HDD to the new unit before i ship the old unit back, once the new unit arrived. So I could still use this as normal, and save my documents , install programs etc. I will just need to swap the HDD once the new unit arrives, not a big deal.

But yea, gotta deal with this. Sigh.

Just curious but what RAM did you buy? Did you buy name brand or some off brand? Just curious. :)

When you call them tomorrow, tell them that you are using the machine for work and you require to have one while you are waiting for the replacement. To let you use the current machine until the new one comes back to you.

When you receive the new machine, check that everything works well, otherwise you have the old machine to exchange 'parts' and make sure everything runs the way you wanted to. Then send the old machine back to dell, and voila, everybody's happy... Best of luck (it took me about 3 months to get a perfect machine - the way I wanted and expected to be, so, yeah, some ups and down we will face...)!

If you would like us to take care of the issue you can contact us on Twitter @DELLCares or send us an e-mail to [email protected] . The return timeframe varies on countries so we need to review the case 1st,
