Hi, I'm pretty new here so forgive me if i seem naive
Just a little concerned because my CPU temperature is getting up to 85 C when gaming and averaging 78-81 C. Seems a little high for my liking and the fan sounds like the things about to take off, any ideas? Is it worth my while taking it to a shop to get a repaste done?

    Thanks

If your CPU is an Intel, especially a quad-core, then those temps are most likely perfectly fine. Link the exact model of notebook with what CPU you have inside and we can provide a better opinion, but for a gaming laptop equipped with powerful CPU, at least, 80 average with 85 max and a lot of noise sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

Those temps are fine depending on how demanding the games you play are. As long as they stay below 90C, there is nothing to worry about. If you would like to drop them anyway you may want to repaste the CPU.

Thanks heaps for your replies, sorry i forgot to mention it's a new Alienware 14 with the i7-4700mq. I'm glad to hear its normal, was just a little concerned because it seems so hot and the fan starts sounding like a hairdryer lol

Is it ok to have random spikes around 90? (say once every hour or two)

    yes
if you're worried, get a cooling pad or at least lift the rear end of the laptop, that helps a lot
or if you don't mind noise, setup a more aggressive fan profile
cpu has it's protective mechanism, if it gets too hot it will underclock or even shut the computer down to prevent damage
