If I hook up my m14x r2 to this monitor HP 2310m 23in Diagonal Full HD Widescreen LCD Monitor and use just like my tower,
will I
1: play games as smooth with a good picture as the screen on laptop.
2: will the response time be ok?
3. does anyone do this?

I don't actually own this monitor, but I can provide you with the information i got. I connect my m14x r2 to a 23" screen with similar hardware details.
1. you will be able to play most of the games at the resolution of 1080p (higher than your r2 display). It depends on the game, some of them use more ressources than others, and if you play on max settings, your fps could drop to a level where you don't want to play anymore and have to lower your graphic settings in the game menu
. You also should check your GPU-temps from time to time, just in case.
2. With a response time of 3ms you're on the safe side
3. As said, I sometimes do this (mainly counterstrike:source) which is not a hardware eater, but CS:S runs perfectly fine.
I hope I could help a little. -
I do this with my Asus G73 which has a 5870m and play BF3 on a 28" monitor at 1200p. I crank everything up and don't have any issues.

I do this with my 27" monitor at 1080p max settings and play CS:GO without any issues at all.

I do that with mu 37inch LCD TV but I leave the screen open because a lot of heat is dissipated through the keys and wherever it can cool more the better for it's lifecycle. I also raise it a bit underneath with a remote control (10 degrees C less). If you leave only the TV(monitor) on there shouldn't be a performance decrease. Of course different resolutions other than 900p(on your laptop) have an effect that's why some games I play 1080p some 720p on my TV.
Close the lid and hook up to monitor?
