I'm interested in buying an M14x from Fry's but unfortunately it comes with the 1366x768 screen.

Is there anyway I could buy the better screen separately and swap it in?

Was that me? I'm not sure; I've asked a lot of questions recently.

I've never taken a laptop's LCD apart before. Do you think maybe if I were to do that that I should pay someone to do it?

You can have Dell come out and do it I think. They will probably charge you like 400$ for it though. If you're unsure you can probably take it to any computer repair shop and they can do it for alot cheaper. The part can probably be bought from ebay or right from Dell, but theyll be more expensive. You'll just need the part number like James said

    Okay, cool :D

Another thing, though, and I guess you wouldn't know unless you've done it, but it's worth a shot:

There's a 14.1" screen made by LG that a lot of people were using to replace the default screen in the Dell XPS 14. It apparently has better color than the default Alienware screens.

Do you think that screen could replace the default Alienware screen? It is 14.1", right?

Eh, its 50/50. In the M15x and M17x r1 people had custom RGB screens that fit, but you never know. I think someone tried to put the MBA screen in the m11x and it didnt work. You could be our ingenue pig though :)

I wouldn't recommend trying to replace it with a 3rd party screen because the LCD display is glued/taped to the bezel. This makes it very hard to remove and you risk cracking the outer plexiglass that makes up the front size of the screen.

Hmm...yeah...that's probably not such a good idea. I'm sure the 1600x900 screen will be fine. I wanted to buy it off the shelf, but I'm starting to realize it might be easier if I customize it online with the 1600x900 screen and plus that way I can get my name engraved on the plate on the bottom ^_^

I think you can call dell and get one of those along with a screen. but it might be cheaper to just buy a whole new machine like you were talking about idk. I know that they charge like $700 for an m17x 1080p screen  (which is robbery). m14x screen should be cheaper but it will still be quite a bit of money.

Don't buy a screen. Get all the individual components and build it yourself. It is much cheaper and very easy....

like I said before its really difficult to install a new individual panel in the screen and I wouldn't recommend trying to do it yourself unless you know exactly what you are doing.
