Hello, fellow m14x owners!
Please share with me your oppinion about m14x Display?
Could you please check what gamut percentage does it have?
Or could you please share what type of matrix it has?
-
I'm also very curious about this.
-
SaosinEngaged Notebook Evangelist
It's going to be around 72% if it's a good WLED.
Not even in the same ballpark as the XPS 15 95% gamut B+RG. -
Dell's own website says its 45% lol...
-
And what can tell us the owner of it?
-
SaosinEngaged Notebook Evangelist
What??? That's horrible... -
Yeah, thats the same rating as the M11x screen. If it really is that bad I will return it and buy the Sony Vaio SA. Or mabye even make some huge compromises and get the XPS 15 for the screen + blu-ray. Idk, I can't eve be fully satisfied with a laptop when the screen is garbage. The Sony Vaio SB would have been the perfect laptop for my needs if it had a better screen. I hate Sony/HP service though. And they have so much bloatware garbage that you can't get rid of if you want your FN keys to work with stuff.
-
I hope it's not as bad as the M11x.. I mean there were existing 14" screens prior to the M14x. So I think it would be a basic one, at least. Not the Uber-best, but a normal one. Or else i would regret it, and get the m17x. I didn't know it had 5 hrs of battery life..
-
The screen description on the m14x site is hilarious. It says that an average color gamut is from 60-90%, then you scroll down and see that the 14x is 45%...
-
It would be cool if you could find a HP radiance screen and throw it in the M14x.
-
That would be cool.. Let's head down the HP forum,. hahah
-
So...who is posting how to switch out the screen in the m14x?
-
I can't help but think that Alienware might have put a nice RGB screen in the M14x if that company that was making HP's Envy 14" Radiance display didn't stop making them. HP said that they can't get them anymore and there are no plans for it down the road.
-
I think many Alienware customers that have been brand loyal should feel a little cheated. Alienware is supposed to be a premium brand with premium hardware/options. The spec's of the M14x screen both the base model and the HD+ are unacceptable. Also the fact that they do not even offer a RGB screen in any of their laptops now is a disgrace. This is most likely a glimpse of things to come from Alienware. Heck its already in best buy now.
Edit: Alot of the $500 laptops at Walmart have better brightness,Viewing Angles and Color Gamut ratings than these new screens.

@ revdiesel - you're surprised? The prices drop, so does the quality (a bit) - especially with Dell mass-producing them.
If you want a high-quality screen, you definitely should go elsewhere. Alienware is about bang/buck. -
I'm not talking vanilla Alienware. I am talking about since Dell has taken them over.
If you are spending $2,000-$3,000 or more you should have an option for a screen that is better than what is found in $500 laptops. Even the XPS 15" has a RGB screen lol -
Did you spend $2k-$3k on your M14x? I hope not. And yes, I'm talking about since Dell took them over. What did you think would happen? Of course they are going to use their mass production advantages and their ability to source parts in huge quantities to lower costs...we're benefiting from it by getting a solid system at a pretty good price - plus we get the "Alienware" name which thankfully still has a good reputation among the general public (i.e. great resale).
The M17x R3 still has a 120hz screen and some options that are pretty sweet. I am sure the M18x will, as well. -
Okay guys I've only had the system today and have been mainly downloading games through steam. I do have the R2 M17x with RGB LED screen so of course this screen is a let down somewhat.
I have to say that I had the M11x for a few days and had to return it due to the screen I couldn't stand that thing. This one is really not that bad sure it could be brighter but at least I have a 1600x900 panel and that is very hard to find today with anything in this form factor.
I had a Sony Viao F a few years ago and that screen was terrible as well. The only problem with the M14x so far is the brightness, but the off viewing angles and everything else is fine for me. -
Most high end M14x are in the $2k range. I think you are missing the point. Just in the last year they have been skimping.
-
Thanks for your input. It's kind of funny you say that the M14x HD+ screen isn't all that bright considering it is rated as one of the brightest newer Alienware screens.
-
$2k range? WOW. That is ridiculous to spend on an M14x. Mine was $1230 shipped? Where does that $800 go?
Anyway...not missing the point - Alienware bought by Dell - overall "high-end" quality of brand gets diluted (slightly and increasing in time) - to add profit through mass production. -
No I completely agree they are starting to skimp and it does suck, I was just trying to give people an idea of the screen quality in reference to other screens that I have owned.
I would of gladly paid 100.00 more to get a Radiance quality screen, and then this computer would be perfect. -
I was stupid when I ordered mine I got the best processor thinking some games would use it. I always read that games like GTA IV were processor dependent. So unfortunately mine did get close to the 1700.00 range. Oh well live and learn.
Sk3th do you do much gaming on your MBP, and if you do could you give us a comparison when you get your M14x -
a SSD is mostly where the money comes from, and going up to 8gig of ram. the m14 i config was around 24xx
-
SaosinEngaged Notebook Evangelist
Lol, there goes the chances of me ever ordering an m14x.
45% (I just checked the Dell site) are you ....kidding me?
Alienware. Dell's highest end brand. Can't even put a screen on the damn thing with an AVERAGE color gamut, they have to go BELOW AVERAGE.
Right.
I ordered an XPS 15 last night with the B+RG and 540m. It's a step down graphics wise, but I have my R3 for all my gaming anyway. It's a deep burn finding out Dell is content with putting a screen on their new offering that can't even cover 50% of the color gamut. I know I'm being harsh, but come on, that's a little pathetic. -
SaosinEngaged Notebook Evangelist
I guess Dell thinks gamers don't care about screen quality as long as the system has FLASHING LIGHTS to distract us. "Ooh pretty colors on the keyboard!"
The funny thing is, I do amateur photography as a hobby. Instead of buying an Elitebook or Precision that both offer proper displays (that should be an option on every good laptop as far as I'm concerned), I actually prefer the design of Alienware. If Dell actually made Alienware what it should be (uncompromised perfection), I'd own an m11x, m14x, and a m17x. It'd be the perfect set up for me.
They'd also be able to tap into the professional market as well, because I guarantee you there's professionals out there (and some on this site) that prefer the bold looks of AW to any *yawn* business workstation but probably wouldn't (or couldn't, depending upon profession) settle for a subpar screen. It's a shame. -
I got the upgraded cpu, gpu, screen, bluetooth, wireless HD etc.. thats over 2k retail. I only paid $1600 though.
-
Is wireless HD anything more than a $300 HDMI cable? I truly hope I'm missing the point on that option.
-
Hey guys, would you mind to double check your invoice or packing slip about the screen? Mine says
230-11871 Display: 14.1in Widescreen High Definition + (1600x900) WLED with TrueLife
Apparently Truelife box is not ticked in m14x, and only available to M17x 3D. -
i only got the $50 discount
-
Yes, basically. It would be cool...but I couldn't justify the cost especially since a 25' HDMI cable is <$25 and I could easily hide it. Nevermind that I wouldn't want to use my laptop to power a setup like that. I've got my desktop here.
-
320-2228 14.0 High Def+ (900p/1600x900) with WLED backlight is there a big difference?
-
with TrueLife is stated in the spec on my invoice. But on the US Dell site the screen dont have truelife! Is this another misprint or could it be means european screens are slightly better?
-
oo, you're from europe. damn you're lucky if you get that haha
-
I am curious and too bad I cannot open the m14x received today. Cheaper order arriving next week, this one will be returned with a £20 charge
Or if it a misprint I could be returning free of charge as there is a mistake in the product delivered. -
So...should expect the screen to be as dull as the M11x?
-
I'm going to be seriously disappointed if the screen is that bad. I can't wait for a professional review so we can see how bad/good it really is.
Someone else has already said that the screen isn't as bad as the M11x's screen. So don't expect it to be that bad. -
SaosinEngaged Notebook Evangelist
Yet, according to the Dell site, it shares the majority of its specs with the m11x screen. -
on the 900P I am definitely satisfied with the screen I think it's a bit brighter than the M11x and the resolution fits the 14" so well its perfect. Definitely like this screen a ton better. No keyboard touching the screen anymore either there's a line of soft rubber that grooves out on both sides of the screen
no more grease on your screen love it!
-
For god's sake get some pictures up please!!!!
-
i posted some in the order discussion
-
Damn i was hoping the screen would be decent. I am also so jelly of all the macbook pros in lecture hall. There screen's are just so bright and vibrant compared to all the other laptops. Especially my m11x R2.
-
Why are you returning it?
-
I have 2 orders. Order A = 16% off, order B = £300 off
Returning A will save me £100
You interested in it?
-
I think with Alienware being taken over by Dell, the pricing is certainly comparable with most other plain laptops out there...There are coupons, discount codes, company promos, EPP, military discounts, etc that unless you simply can't wait for your purchase, you should be able to get one for quite a bit off and probably cheaper than from a lot of other vendors. I would assume they still make a profit or they wouldn't offer some of the deals I've seen posted.
Agree that it would be nice to have more screen options, but sorta hard to beat the warranty (on-site, next day) and price/bang. You see discounts of 10-30% regularly here. Someone just posted 600 off a 2400 or so machine for around 25% off? Not sure what you can haggle with other companies, but that sounds pretty good for a "premium" name. -
I agree. Alienwares are much more affordable now and I'm pleased Dell took over. I was reading that Alienwares used to be 4000$ and take 2 months to ship, which is ridiculous.
I too received an excellent discount of approximately 25% (stacked discount/coupon) and next business day shipping free, so if you find the right reps, they will hook you up. It took me almost a week to find GOOD reps that work with YOU
Mind you, these discounts are only very good for US customers, and as a Canadian, I'm having it shipped to someone I know in the US (was going to ship to my uncle in California, but I'm shipping it to Rochester, NY; good friend of mine will hold it and it's 45 minutes+ away from me. Total savings almost 400$. -
Going to be hard to go to a lower quality display. Now I'm wondering if I should keep the XPS 15 (along with the m14x) instead of selling it.
-
Hey, guys.
Could you please check the properties of the screen?
Like it was made here for asus:
