I just bought a Crucial M4 256G, I want to install it into place where HDD placed. And put HDD into optical bay.

    My question is:

1: Which will SDD run, sata 2 or sata 3?
2: which will HDD run if I put HDD into optical bay, sata 2 or sata 1?

My new R2 is using Ivy bridge chips if that helps.

    Thanks

My understanding is that both the mSATA slot and the primary HDD bay support SATA III :] The ODD bay may be limited to SATA I or maaaybe SATA II. Definitely not SATA III though if you use a caddy.

    Hey guys,

Just backing up the_phsychologist, yes, the mSATA slot and the primary HDD bay support SATA III. Now I'm not recommending switching the ODD for a HDD but I'll share the information I know :) the ODD port supports SATA II.

thanks for reply. But could you give me more info about why you are not
recommending switching the ODD for a HDD? 256G SSD is not enough for me, and I don't use ODD at all.

i would not boot from the ODD caddy, but there should be no problem installing a 1TB 5400RPM or 750GB 7200RPM drive in it. boot from an mSATA SSD and this whole issue can be avoided. but i do like the idea of SATA III SSD in the mSATA slot as system disk, 750GB drive in the primary bay, and 750 or 1TB in the ODD. if your m14x has good specs, this would push it over the top :] people seem to have problems with RAID setups, but you could at least have SSDs in all the bays eventually. very powerful stuff!

actually, mSATA system drive, 256GB SATA III SSD in bay, and 1TB 5400RPM drive in the caddy would yield the least heat. and the upgrade to all SSDs when the prices go down and capacity increases :]

I like to use mSATA, but I went to Crucial website and it states the 256g mSATA dones't compatible with M14XR2, that's why I bought a 256G SSD.

Which brand of mSATA are you using right now?

I have a wee 64GB Kingston that is SATA II. High reviews at Amazon and only $90. Even SATA II is pretty decent when it's nearly saturated (this SSD tops out around 250MB/s read). I install all my main SW on the mSATA SSD, then install less important stuff on the 750GB. I hadn't heard anything about certain mSATA SSDs not being compatible w/ the r2??

Here's what Newegg has right now: Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, Hard Drives, SSD, Internal SSD, mSATA

IMO it's too early too worry about SATA III in the mSATA slot. Prices are very high still and we need to wait for them to drop. But the SSD in the primary bay is easy to fill w a full SATA III drive.

This is something for the AW techs to answer. Good luck! Maybe someone else has installed this SSD successfully? It's a pretty popular model.
