I am thinking of buying a Dell UltraSharp monitor. However I have a few questions. When I plug my Laptop into my TV via HDMI I can only set my resolution to 1600x900 so it does not fit my TV screen. Is this a problem with my TV or because I am using HDMI?
I plan to plug my M14x into my monitor via VGA will I be able to set my resolution to the max 1080p resolution will I be able to do this?

I believe that you need to put both the PC and the screen on the same resolution. Use the max you can.

I believe you're using the option "duplicate desktop", where your notebook screen and tv show exactly the same -> requires same resolution.
You have to choose one monitor to "extend" your desktop, then you will be able to set the resolution for both the monitors, e.g. your notebook screen 1600x900 and your TV 1920x1080.
Works perfectly for me, yes, with HDMI.
