    GeForce GT 555M

Is it really worth the money?? between the 1.5GB and the 3GB?

    Both GDDR3.

    Not sure if worth.

No, the 3GB version will offer no (or very, very little) performance advantages over the 1.5GB version, unless you have lots of AA applied - but in that case, you wouldn't have playable framerates anyway (unless the game is very, very old)

    CUDA Cores on GT 555M - SDDR3 (1.5GB) = 144
    CUDA Cores on GT 555M - GDDR5 (3GB) = 96

    Memory Interface Width - SDDR3 (1.5GB) = 192 Bit
    Memory Interface Width - GDDR5 (3GB) = 128 Bit

Hawk - how do you know for certain 100 percent they are not GDDR5? Manual? If so can you please post the link. I want to read something about it.

    Thanks!

It's on the configure page, at least for the US site. They're both listed as DDR3.

you dont need more than 1.5GB really, specially when the max resolution is 1600x900.

The 555M can't even use the full 1.5GB.

Dell is throwing these 3 and 4 GB GPUs out there a lot these days, in hopes of taking advantage of the uneducated.

Someone really needs to get Dell/Alienware to clarify that the only difference is indeed the amount of memory. There could be other differences, or it could be the 3GB DDR5 card via a typo on the web site. Right now this is all assumption based on DDR3 appearing on one piece of documentation as far as I know. Have any reviewers gottent their hands on a 3GB configured m14x yet?

Wow, I'm sure the "Alienware Recommended" bit is twice the size it used to be.

I still don't trust it, given that the typical config from Nvidia with 3GB has DDR5. I'm not saying that I don't believe that there can be a 3GB DDR3 version as well as an OEM cash-grab, I'm just saying that I want more than one line of text on the day-one launch page for the model on Dell's web site. A reviewer with the model in-hand or clarification from a non-CSR Dell/Alienware rep would suffice also.

And I'll be waiting on just that before I make a decision either way, but for now, this is all we have to go on.

    Hi, new to the forum!

This info is not on the UK site however, before i placed my order yesterday i had 2 conversations with 2 different people at dell about this and they both confirmed to me that it would be GDDR5. If this proves to be wrong then mine will be going back

Download the service manual. It's posted around - it says DDR3 for both

Besides, based on this: GeForce GT 555M

The GDDR5 version has only 96 SP's vs. 144, so it's not much of a tradeoff

Wikipedia says its DDR3 too: Comparison of Nvidia graphics processing units - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    It's DDR3. Period

Never, ever, ever believe a Dell rep when it comes to technical information.

We should have a sticky relating to how stupid these guys are. One guy in the M15x forum was explicitly told that it was physically impossible to change the GPU in the notebook. Which is complete crap.

He's talking about m15x and how stupid some/most the dell reps are when it come to tech details. And I agree, they probably don't know what is the difference between DDR3 and 5.

And back to topic, are there any laptops out there with GT555M with DDR5? I heard a new MSI model(GX680) has it but I'm not sure.

    Edit: http://www.nvidia.com/object/product-geforce-gt-555m-us.html
and here's the official GT555M specs with DDR3 and 5.

Basically DDR5 version has less CAUD cores with a lot higher core clock speed and memory clock, 128bit width vs 192bit, and 50.2 vs 43.2 bandwidth. Any expert around?

According to AnandTech, the one in M14x has 144 CUDA cores and DDR3 memory. They refer that version as GT555M "B",while the one with 96 CUDA cores and GDDR5 memory is refered as GT555M "A".

And from what I remember,A has 128bit memory bandwidth while B has 192bit

1.5gb is the best price to performance, 3gb is the "best". The End.
