Do you guys think it's possible that alienware m14x r2 will get the GTX 680m instead of the 650m? I personally find the 650m a weak card vs the 680m. That's the only thing that holding me back from getting the m14x r2

    Thanks guys,

Hopefully one of the alienware reps can answer my question

Tbh, you are wanting too much for this formfactor.... The 555m gt is pretty good for the formfactor, and the 650m is leaps and bounds better from my understanding...

Na no way. I WISH or else I would have purchase an m14x. I really really wanted one but I also wanted the 7970m, so in the end I settled for the bigger laptop that was more future-proof. :(

680M is a 100 watt TDP MXM card, won't fit in such a small laptop like an M14x, hence it is reserved for laptops that can cool it properly, like M17x, M18x.

The problem is that the motherboard of the m14x includes the video card so there is no way that you can get the 680m in it, also the power required for that card is waaaay more than the one needed for the card that is soldered in the m14x. :(

In regards to the OP - Yes, the 650m is 'weak' compared to the 680m, however, this card has been able to handle everything I've thrown at it. I am very impressed with it!

Yeah we all have to admit that the 650m is a very impressive video card for it's amazingly low power consumption :)

You could put it in, but it will melt a minute after you start running it.

Only after I get a desktop 690 in my m17x. I think it would fit somehow. :p

Thanks for the feedback guys I really appreciate it.

I guess I'll just go with the MSI GT60 with the GTX 680m

You can also try the m17x, it has a 3D screen option and it is capable of running the GTX680m without a problem :) :) :)

For what it's worth - I see your current machine is a 15". I have a 17" Dell for work, and the M14xR2. Having always been a big fan of "bigger is better" i can tell you that I would never go back to a 17".

The 14" is great and very portable, and with the 650m the machine is great. The 17" is very hard to travel with and not very comfortable as a true 'lap-top'.

I guess my new train of thinking now is, if I want something larger than a 14", I'll probably build a tower, or hook up an external monitor (which BTW, the 650m outputs 1080p to my 48" TV no problem)

Just another consideration before jumping up to a larger (and probably more expensive) laptop. I know I had the same concerns as you did when I bought mine a couple months back... especially with the 680m rumors going around. I'm still glad I went for the M14xR2.

Great input. Opinions are always welcome. I think that you have a great point here. If you don't mind about the size and weight of the m17x then that is the way to go but if you need something more portable I assure you that the m14x R2 is a great machine.

I had a 14" laptop I bought in 2003 and moved up to a 17" in 2007. The 17" screen was excellent but 9lbs was too heavy (specially after carrying it for 4 years). Now on my m14x, I can run a game on the laptop at 900p or on a 1080p monitor or tv at decent settings and it weighs about 6lbs. So no regrets at all.

When i was looking for a laptop last year, i was really tempted by the Asus 15.6" laptop but it was quite heavy (9lbs for 15.6"). For my criteria of under 7lbs and a gpu of 555m or higher, the m14x was the most powerful (Didn't like the xps 17") in the market. No one else would put a 555m in such a small laptop. Only found 540m or 525m.

My only recommendation is get an external monitor/tv to connect the laptop to when at home. It will help a lot but when travelling the laptop monitor is comfortable.

And go for the 900p upgrade. The original screen is not worth going for in such a good laptop.
