The GT555M is a 3D ready but it is disabled by Dell, you also need a 3D screen on the laptop (or maybe on the external monitor I'm not sure but it is possible) just like the M17x where they have 2 option - 1) is the normal 1080p screen while 2) is the 3D screen.

It does support 3D. I used it on my LG 3DTV to play Avatar 3D SBS. You need the following installed to have your laptop recognize an external 3D display though:

    1) A certified 3D capable HDMI cable (I use a 1.4 HDMI cable, but other ones may work. I had trouble with another cable I had recognizing the 3D display modes)
    2) Nvidia 3DTV Play Software (you can run a 10 day trial) - this allows your nvidia hardware to detect an external 3D Display for viewing.

'For Movies' - 3D Player Software (Cyberlink has software, and there may be free options as well).

'For Games' - Make sure you set your primary display as your external HDMI 3DTV. The Nvidia software should detect it and display in 3D.

I use a passive display which doesn't require flicker glasses, so there may be additional set up if you use active shutter glasses. There is also some 3D display first time setup you should run through to calibrate your display (Its the one that has you look at pictures to see if you can see triangles or squares with your left-right eyes).

If you are in the market for a 3DTV, definitely get a passive display - you have less hassle without the cost and time spent charging glasses, and the 3D is much brighter and sharper. Plus you can steal glasses (not that I would ever do this) from the theater and have them work at home!
