Some games that try to automatically adjust display settings for your graphics card don't know what to do with the GT 555m. TrackMania Nations has a window that pops up every time I start it -- it says it is configuring display settings for my graphics card and then a few seconds later it says that it can't.

F.E.A.R. tries to check the graphics card before it will let me change any display settings, and it always crashes while doing so. I can play the game, but I'm stuck on low res with default settings.

Intel HD Graphics 3000 driver version: 8.15.10.2321
    GT 555m driver version: 8.17.12.6721

I've tried running FEAR with Optimus on and I've tried forcing FEAR to use the 555m. Neither works.

Here's the error message from F.E.A.R.

In the NVIDIA panel configuration, there's an option to force the use of programs or games with 555 ...look this video: How to add games/applications to the whitelist in order to play in high video performance mode.

Try to update the nvidia drivers too: NVIDIA & Laptop News | Latest NVIDIA drivers and related news | laptopvideo2go.com

Alas, certain games, the Witcher for instance do not work, even if you try to force through the control panel. Patience for driver updates will be rquired for some of these games.

From my extensive research on my issue with the Witcher and looking through the nvidia forums on Optimus, we are effectively stuck until we get some new drivers.

I bet you could simply do a clean install of your drivers and do a downgrade to a few drivers back and it would work.

I just gave up and am playing witcher with low res textures and hoping for a future driver update that will work. Some of the older games just cannot see the optimus nvidia graphics card

how do you guys even know which games are using the nvidia card and which aren't?

I've bought a few games and just installed and tested them out. How do I know if nvidia is being used?

need to go to the nvidia control panel, select desktop at the top and make sure you select the bottom chocie which mentions displaying the ndvida gpu thing on the screen. Then when running a game which is using the card, just alt tab it and look in the bottom right corner and you should see the game icon in the box indicating that it is making use of the nvidia card.

I found a fix to play FEAR.

Use the Nvidia control panel to force the game to run using the integrated graphics card. Launch the game, change the settings, then quit. Then relaunch the game using the Nvidia card. Once I relaunched, I could even go into the settings again while using the Nvidia card. It may only need to use the integrated card that very first time.

As a note, I was at 1600x900 and I had almost everything set to max (with the exception of really system intensive stuff like high AA, volumetric lighting, shadow softening, and a few others) and the integrated graphics card managed to average 25 fps. For those of you looking to avoid fan noise, this game could run from the integrated GPU with only a few settings turned down from max.

I can't add GTA4 to a while list. Or I mean, it's there, supposed to use nVidia card but in game shows that I don't have enough resourses and won't let me ajust any settings.

Yep, same issue here. Looks like this issue had been addressed in one of the nvidia driver updates, but we will likely need to wait for dell to release them. Unless you want to try altering that ini file and putting whatever set of drivers on that you want.
