First love the machine, bought a new mac air but it was not right for me.
M14 is just right.
Anyway purchased a M14x locally and they only have 1366x768 display.
It fine but the gloss is tough when outside.
The higher resolution might be a problem as I'm oldish and have oldish vision.
Text on the 1366x768 is ledgible.
Anyone with 42 year old vision have the 1600x900 and have issues with readability?
-
The gloss is just as bad on the 1600x900, just keep that in mind.
-
There is a matte option correct?
-
-
I thought for sure I saw the option on the Dell site but now I can't find it.
It must have been some other machine that had this option... -
Viewed both resolutions on my M14x. Dont bother upgrading - this is a 14 inch screen we're talking about - and this is coming from someone in their 20's.
Ps. 42 is NOT old. -
Just adjust text size in accessibilty options and get the better res. It's worth it for other things like image viewing and gaming.
-
The higher res screen is also brighter, so the glare you perceive will be less. Add a matte screen protector and you'd be set.
-
It may not be absolutely worth it to upgrade. Games would be played better on the lower resolution and everything on the screen is slightly bigger. I have 1600x900 resolution, and at first I used to get lost in the huge resolution. Your eyes have further to travel across the screen because everything's smaller.

(Joking lol)
Ive seen the 720p screen in real life, and have the 900p screen for myself. The 900p screen is definitly just a tad brighter, and I myself prefer the higher res for photoshop and video editing, as I can fit more on screen. If you think youll have trouble seeing it though, may as well keep the 720p screen. I thought 720p on a 14 inch screen was pretty much a good balance. -
I think of it as better to have and not need. You can always turn the resolution back down to 1366 if your games suffer, it will still be the same aspect ratio.
-
Very true, I do this for alot of games like Crysis and Metro 2033, but hes worried that Windows and everything will be too small for his eyes. That HD+ screen will be useless if he cant see it lol -
In my opinion, I don't upgrade the screen. I hardly use this laptop on the street. It always connect to an external monitor. I also feel more comfortable with the 768p on 14" monitor.
-
The "Brightness" is due to this higher resolution as well as the power of suggestion that you have a "better" screen.
You are contradicting your own advice for the man. -
Hey man, chill a bit. Sorry for the 20 joke, didn't mean to offend anyone. Im just another user on the forum trying to help someone out, sorry if I confused you or the OP
-
All
Thanks for the comments I think I'll stick 720p, my eyes are pretty good corrected with my nuclear contacts but I'm usually on the 14x late in the day and have tired eyes, oh and probably a pint or three in me
I know I said this in the OP but this is a fantastic machine. Love almost everything about it. Wish it was a bit lighter but I could easily shed some pounds and offset the weight.
Also just installed CS 5.5 and it runs better than my main desktop that has SLI. Proves I need to build a new box. -
Reducing the res from native res you can tell how nasty it looks by comparison regardless of the aspect ratio.
However, if you want your laptop to last for as long as possible and be able to play games on higher settings then you should stick with the 1366x768 native res. If you're using it for browsing and stuff most of the time then I'd get the 1600x900. As others have mentioned, you can always increase the size of the fonts (on the dpi level) if you have trouble viewing. Even then, if you're browsing, you can always zoom in... -
And FTR, it doesn't look 'nasty'. -
and I just wanted to ensure people knew the facts about the different screens with regards to them not being the "same hardware with a higher res". Regardless of how u feel between the 2 companies, they are different. Not trying to get into a pissing match with u or anyone else.
Have 1366x768 display should I upgrade to 1600x900?
