single jack plug to a twin phono plug will work fine.
many a laptop ive run like that including m15x and its worked great for gigs.
turn laptop sound full on and then control from amp or mixer.

There are many inexpensive USB sound cards that either A> produce much better audio than built in sound cards, B> include an optical link, or C> will allow 5.1 output.

Check out TurtleBeach. I use their USB sound cards in my DJ racks, and they produce far superior audio with much, much better S/N. Very clean, clear, and higher levels.

They include an optical adapter with the ones I have, but I have never had occasion to use it.
