    Hi all,

    I want to confirm these:

    1. So, after putting in the SSD I should use the DELL Windows 7 restore DVD to get the OS. Then I proceed with Batboy's clean Win 7 install guide

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...er-install-order-guide-alienware-systems.html

    2. The respawn recovery media is used in case I want to put the original drive back and has no use with the SSD.

    3. A question. How does the Windows 7 activation process work? Do I have to deactivate the stock drive? Otherwise I see a potential problem using the Win 7 disc that came with the system to install OS on many drives and putting these in other systems; I'm assuming there's something to prevent that.

    Thanks!

    1) Yes. However, if you're looking for a true Clean Install I'd suggest creating a bootable USB key with your version of Windows 7 (x86, x64) and installing your OS from there. It is much faster than using an optical drive. After your OS is installed follow Batboy's install guide.

    2) Clarify please.

    3) As far as I know after your initial activation of Windows 7, (be it OEM or aftermarket) is locked into that particular computer. This prevents the installation of the OS on a HDD/SSD and the placing of it in another machine without a valid license like you have described above.

    You do not have to deactivate the stock drive; if you did, many people would have issues in respect to the stock drive crashing and the re-installation of the OS in a new HDD.

    From my experience a clean install will allow you either type in your product key during setup or in the next 30 days. Otherwise you will have to renew your free Windows 7 installation (up to two times) or be locked out of the OS every 2 hours until you activate Windows. Once installed you must activate Windows (control panel>system and security>system) You must enter the multipart code you see by telephone or internet and then the automated Microsoft system will supply you with a multipart code to enter into your system to complete activation.

    @V_Chip

    For 2., I've read on batboy's thread that the backup media may not work with an SSD due to a smaller storage capacity than the stock drive. So, I'm assuming the one created using the stock drive may not work for the SSD.

    However, if a recovery media is created using the respawn program installed on the SSD, I assume it will work with the SSD should the need arise.

    I see that depending on how many hardware changes are made (as the activation info is tied in with a system) the need to reactivate may or may not arise. Okay, so if I can't activate online I'll just use phone. No need to worry.

    Cheers for replying!

    The OEM Windows has already been pre-activated. It is tied to Dell BIOS, I could install Win7 using the OEM on my SSD without any issues.

    As long as it is a DELL BIOS, windows will be activated. I did for my girlfriend's Inspiron 14 downgraded Vista to XP using my old M1210 OEM Disc.
