Hey everyone!
I'm excited I just ordered 2 M14x laptops after carefully reading everyones comments and thoughts in the other threads and decided to just pull the trigger.
The estimated delivery date says around the 2nd week of may for both, if they come any sooner I will let you know.
Wish me luck and hopefully they don't have any problems from the factory (which is unfortunately inevitable and just luck based)
* I am gonna try to make a clear crisp nice unboxing video as soon as they arrive so if u have any questions just let me know.

One is for me the other is for my girlfriend
I got them both base except for the processor. I use audocad and host a minecraft server, (with only like 4-5 ppl lol) So I can use the better processor.
I also have an EPP so the upgrade wasn't much of a price difference -
Did you have to call to get the EPP price? I have access to EPP but laptop is not available online.
-
yeah lemme guess, the red for gf and the black for u lol.

almost ONE M18x
lol
Congrats, man -
Oh and, some nice hard benchmarks might be of more interest than an unboxing video (to me at least!), if you'd be so kind! I know what an Alienware looks like, both in and out the box. But performance... now thats where the moneys at!
-
-
What does EPP stand for again?
-
-
Ah, if only you'd taken the standard 1366x768 display with the base one. That would have been a great battery comparison with the one I'm thinking of!
Congrats though man, I'm envious. -
Its discounts given to employees of certain companies. I'm assuming your company has to have an agreement with dell. -

-
hello folks! I am planning to buy an M17x !!
Does anybody have a big discount coupon for M17x ??
-
How do i find out if my school has the EPP?
-
Well I took the plunge just a little after a year with my M11x. I love my M11x, but I will be gifting it to my brother for the more powerful cousin here:
System Name and Type: Laptop - Alienware M14X
Monitor: 14.0" High Def+ (900p/1600x900) with WLED backlight

Memory: 6GB DDR3 at 1600MHz
Hard Drive: 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s
Video Card: 3.0GB DDR3 NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M using NVIDIA Optimus technology
Optical Drive: 8x SuperMulti DVD±R/RW Slot Load Optical Drive (Your computer will only play BluRay if it is specifically listed here)

I struggles with the ssd option, but I can always buy one down the road, likely at a better deal. The EPP, didn't cut too much off, likely because they already have a deal that takes over 200 dollars off the price. I still plan on getting a new Area 51 next year, so this should be good for now. -

is it easy enough to restore the system when you swap out hard drives ? for example load windows and the rest of the alienware programs
-
Honestly.....no reason I guess. The money wasn't an issue at that point, but who knows. More just a whim really. I understand that there isn't too terribly much that th 3gb does, but perhaps down the road it will be more useful.
Just out of curiosity, as far as buying your own ssd, what do you do for your Operating System and all that? Does dell provide a way to reinstall Windows once you switch the drive?
Sorry Paddon, you posted as I was typing much of the same stuff -
I want one of these, I think it will be the perfect system for my needs. Srudent, I have to carry it around, but I like gaming. Benchmarks would be GREATLY appreciated when you get them. Thanks!
-
Swapping out the SSD is simple, it's mostly just plug and play (hardware wise)
As for the software, yes Dell provides a copy of windows on a DVD and all the drivers on another. You can also get the drivers from Dell.com/drivers by entering your service tag.
When I get my laptops I always do a fresh install of windows since I'm picky how I install things so I get the best out of it. I optimize it for the SSD and only install what I need. -
okay, so any ideas from anyone as to where i would look to find a good ssd drive that would work with the m14x? or would any laprop ssd work?
-
Congratulations, but honestly screw the unboxing videos. There are going to be a ton of them out there and very little to differentiate one from the other. What you should do, particularly if you're looking for hits, is FRAPS recordings of some key games. Crysis 2, Shogun 2, Rift etc etc. The vids I've been posting along those lines for the M11x have bee going gangbusters and people genuinely seem really interested.

Okay, I know I'm late to this party, but forecasting weather for the USAF is a mighty busy task.
Anyway, I'd just like to say to all of those of you who want to get an SSD, do it like I did: I got a Crucial SSD on sale from Newegg, to be put in my upcoming laptop purchase which will more than likely be the M14x as I'm selling my M15X to a friend. -
What resellers do is use an HD camera and aim/zoom into the laptop while on a tripod of some sort and the user plays the game of choice.
This will show what true performance is like -
will you get more battery life if you replace hdd with ssd ?

Some games will slow down a little when recording fraps. The trick is to configure both Fraps and the game properly. Also don't record to a slow device. THe most notable titles to slow down are those that are CPU and disk intensive. For example I had some slow down in the Shogun 2 video I did for the M11x, but not a lot. In Rift I had a drop from around 35 fps to 30 fps.
In Shift 2, I dropped from 60 fps to 59 fps.
The benefit of doing things with Fraps over a camera is you don't get artifacts in the video, don't have to worry about reflection, do get an HD recording etc etc etc.
If you've been having problems you probably need to spend some time tweaking things
Shift 2 vid - YouTube - Shift 2 Unleashed First Impressions
Rift - YouTube - Rift, on the Alienware M11x
Shogun 2 (the vid with the most noticeable frame rate drop, and the first Fraps video I made before I learned about configuring things properly)- YouTube - Total War Shogun 2 on the M11x
PS. I don't know about 'resellers' and their videos, but this is the route taken by reviewers and journalists - I am one.
Just ordered 2 M14x laptops
