I didn't keep track of my temps before I redid my thermal paste. I just remember hitting 75 on my GPU a few times.
My temps now though are going around the low 80s for my cores. Core 0 goes to mid 80s, around 86.
And my GPU still hits 74-76.
Is it working right?
And also, am I supposed to BSOD around the 76C mark? I used to BSOD higher at 80. I'm on the 290 beta driver btw.

What cpu are you using?
-
I'm using the 2630QM.
-
Those are acceptable temps its a 45W CPU. Don't compare it to the i5 2430m temps because its 35W. Mine goes up to 95C.

Repasting is not very worth it IMO, maybe for a few degrees at best. People here always looks for repasting as a way of better cooling. Unless the pasting was really shotty when the computer was manufactured, repasting doesn't mean dramatically lower temps. Gaming laptops always have higher than normal heat. Now add a smaller overall chassis, a very hot running quad core sandybridge cpu, and a single fan to cool both cpu and gpu, its like the perfect storm lol. All that would really help is a laptop cooler, you probably have one though, and a lower room temperature.
-
Those temps are fine. It's recommended to do a repasting job every year after the initial paste in-case you didn't know. I'll need to do it myself when I find time ...thinking IC7 will do the trick, but I'll have to cross-compare them all first.
-
It really depends though, most "stock" thermal pastes coupled with a bad pasting job = higher temps, that's why I prefer to do my own repaste every year (which includes cleaning the fans, trying out new thermal pastes etc..)
aside from certain users like me being OCD about it hehehehe.
done correctly though it has helped my temps go lower both in laptops and desktops
-
It actually did help me a bit and I'm noticing the difference now. I guess I had to wait a few hours to a day for it to work or something. Been getting a noticeable decrease in temps and I'm not BSODing anymore. All the while overclocked my GPU to 815 and barely went above 75C on temps there.
-
it also depends on the thermal paste, some pastes has a 24-48 hours curing time before you can see the effects while others are good to go as soon as it's applied
-
Ive seen some of Dell's factory pasting job and they can be shocking. Some look like they shot it with a paintball gun and just slapped the heatsink on top. Some even have paste overflowing down to the board.
-
hmm really? Never thought they'd overuse the paste, since less is more in the thermal paste realm, it'd save them on money too if they used less, unless their paste is a very low grade. Maybe I should take a look at the paste job on mine. I wish alienware was its own company again. xoticpc lets you choose thermal paste brand for laptops.

Time = Money
TIM = cheap -
and some laptops doesn't even use thermal pastes anymore. they just slap a thermal pad under the heatsink and hope your cpu or was it a gpu doesn't overheat.

Just repasted 2 days ago after noticing any sustained load would shoot my up to 96 or 98. a cold boot followed by a WEI test gave me 96 on 2 cores, so I know "the new guy" got to learn how to apply paste on my machine. when I finally got the heatsink off I was disgusted. my CPU looked like someone just took a teaspoon scoop and dumped it on the cpu and gpu, then let the force of tightening the heatsink squeeze out the excess. it was gunked out well past the resistors on cpu around the core and the job could have been done with 1/10 what they used. I always used Arctic Silver before but this time went with Antec Formula7 nano-diamond and I have seen a 25 degree drop running a WEI test and now i hit about 70-71 max. I personally use WEI for temp testing cuz its quick but holds each test long enough to max temp a chip. it was a pain to spread and hassle to work with but I am amazed by the results.

ok tip for every body
ready for it?
ok
CLEAN OUT THE DUST
just sayin, made my temps drop about 10 degrees off the gpu -
I thought i had been keeping her pretty dust free but inside where the fan meets the heatsink I did have a nice wad built up. im sure that was probably related to my high temps as well as the better temps after repasting and cleaning.
Just repasted, do I need to do it again?
