Hey guys, there have been numerous threads on this subject and a couple different answers.
I, as well as others, would love to know what card you have if you are having problems updating your drivers. This problem is that when updating, the GT555m seems to disappear from the system and can be quite frustrating.
This is not to discuss how to fix, there are numerous threads on this subject, the goal of this thread is to find out WHAT cards are having this problem
THREAD DISCUSSION: If you are having this problem do you have the 1.5 gig or the 3.0 gig card? simple as that
TALLY:
3gig: 4
1.5gig:0
Thanks! -Papa
EDIT: i should specify that this problem exists in some of the newest built M14x's (past month)

-
ive never had this problem and i have the 3 gb card.
-
Just a suggestion but you might want them to post update version FROM and TO. could be an issue going from one version to another as well.
Card: 3GB
FROM: 285.62
TO: 290.53 (Beta) -
Interesting, will do, and i will also add a tally marker to see how many problems
-
1.5GB card, first batch launch model in Apr/May, never had any problem with graphic card
-
1.5 card no issues.
-
Thanks for the responses guys, hopefully this tally can help ease some minds, like mine, i ordered the 1.5 but have been following this topic because i was worried it would affect me too.
Keep the results coming! -
Same here, I think the problem of those with the 3GB card only happen on the newer laptop because I had this laptop for around 6month+ now.
Btw the driver version I had is 290.36 Beta. -
I've had this problem on 2 different M14x's and they both had the 3.0Gb Nvidia card.
-
I will count AeroSatan's as two, bringing the Tally to 3 to 0
-
I think this is a very good thread. I suggest that time of manafacture be also taken into account( read into Jon's post: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m14x/638389-gt-555m-new-version.html#post8234491).
Though i'm still wondering why people get the 3gb card unless it's free.. -
Thanks! and that URL is getting a 404 error
-
That url is somehow mess up, here I fixed that: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m14x/638389-gt-555m-new-version.html#post8234491

i have the 3.0gb card as i had no choice at time of purchase, thus no extra price, this was back in july, i am in the UK and can confirm i havent once had any problems with the 3.0gb card, always detectable and most the time i do not need to whitelist a game beforehand for it to find the card
-
Thank you for your response, most of us believe that this problem is with fairly modern m14x's (past month), something about shipping with a newest model of the GT555m that not even Nvidia is caught up with yet. (read jons post).
Anyways, thanks again for helping us determine exactly who is having this problem. Glad to see not everyone is suffering from it. -
I had the issue and I have the 3.0 GB GT 555M which was purchased this past week, January, 3rd.
-
Thank you for this info!

1.5 GB card, A08 BIOS. My first day :/

I have a 3gb card since november,
No problems with drivers untill i had a cpu fault and the MB replaced a two weeks ago.
at that point the 3gb card could not be recognised by windows or drivers no matter which level driver. Untill the new driver yesturday. -
3gb here never had a problem with my m14x it works absolutely perfect and im happy with that
-
1.5gig had video card disappear problem, fixed with bios flash hasnt happend since. got computer in october
-
Ineteresting
-
1.5 gb, never had any issue . I still whitelist the game everytime before playing just in case. Takes about 30 seconds
-
3.0 gig card. Ordered on Dec.28th delivered Jan.4. It came with A07 and flashed to A08 and then downloaded the 269 driver and all went well. I'm still concerned, however. I still have 10 days to return and am considering it with all the discussions about the 3.0 card. I would just tell them to either build me a brand new one with same specs except the 1.5 card or give me a refund. The 3.0 gig card came with the my order, I didn't select it as it doesn't make a difference. It does appear the issue is software related and may be fixed with the A08 and 269 updated on the 11th and 12th but I have no way of checking. What do you guys think? Thanks

Never had an issue with my 3GB card. Running 285.62 right now, had one driver before that (I forget which) and before that were the drivers it ships with. All problem-free
-
Can we confirm that there was a fix with the 269 drivers, what I mean is there is a fix, and at least it gets your card up and running?
-
I received my M14x on 12/30/2011. It had the 3gb card, A07 bios and 269.xx drivers. The card was recognized fine, just could not update drivers and it ran too hot while gaming (92c to 98c). (Returned to Dell and ordered an M18x on 1/10/2011).
-
1.5 Gigs, M14X delivered in June 2011. No problems here.
-
Hi. mind if ask what are your GPU specs in GPU-z: (106,116,124d) and also device ID?
and also for CGSDR. same question as above.
thanks! -
Mine is the 106 running stable now on beta drivers for skyrim (290.53 from memory)
-
thanks for the info. btw have you had any problems updating drivers?
-
i got mine with the 3.0GB video card but it was ok... until my mobo broke and now im stuck on how to make Dell compensate for my money. considering that i'm from the Philippines.
-
that's bad. What exactly happened? try posting in a warranty thread as it seems more appropriate. I am from the philippines too.
-
i know, right? so yeah, putting that aside, I haven't really put any stress to my computer... temp monitors have always been turned on and i was getting 55-60 on the V.CARD... processor max temp was only at 85, then again, the mobo died... ok which thread again is the "warranty"?
Lets Clear this up: 1.5gig vs 3.0gig problem
