-G46 has a GTX 660m which is 15% faster than the ddr5 gt 650m ( we are comparing stock vs stock, i know some will say if gt 650m be oc'd to gtx 660m levels, but then gtx 660m can be oc'd also)
-G46 will have a higher resolution at a later date if you are patient
-Matte screen
-G46 will also have thunderbolt at a later date
-G46 will have the same dual cooling fan set up for whisper quiet vs the single fan of the m14x for both gpu/cpu
-G46 is 5.5lbs vs m14x is 6.5lbs
But Alienware still has the advantage with the lighting fx if you are into that sort of thing, an optical drive if you still need it, and on site repair warranty. But it looks like a real competition here especially if it is priced under $1,200. Obviously the first batch will only have 768p screen so the M14x still has the advantage of the 900p screens, but once the 900p or 1080p along with thunderbolt rolls out with the g46, it will definitely be the fastest 14" gaming laptop.
Will Alienware counter it finally with a dual fan set up and a much better cooling on R3 nxt year? We'll see

well, the lack of an optical drive actually set these two far apart. You'll notice that you can indeed get a blu-ray player on the m14x(maybe even burner) and that may kill the deal for some folks as it certainly would for me. If the alienware m14x didnt have an optical drive then im sure it would have been designed allot different. I dont think its really fair to compare the two. 768p would also kill the deal for me. I must say alienFX is quite cool. Overall, for now the M14x is still the better deal because it is a proven product rather than a new release product that is sure to have some sort of problems. just my 2 cent.

I agree with juggar, plus, the m14x just looks waaaaaay better than the g46
-
M14X is heavier, but smaller in all dimensions. M14X is available today! I had a G73, if you think the Alienwares have complaints about build quality go peek into the Asus forums.
-
Looks nice, in dimensions its actually the same (0,1cm wider or so woah)
But weight, even half of a kg is a lot for me, not that i cant carry a heavy laptop but its just note confortable to carry it all day long.
Aaand its stronger, with a matte screen, with better cooling. (actually using an m14x in a quite class is a nightmare, with full speed ventillation, everyone stares at me
)
The build quality could be the bottleneck, i dont like plastic laptops at all (m14x has magnesium inside and its quite strong)
Though for me its winning if i can get an i7, FHD one for around 1200 bucks. -
You have full speed fan ventilation while in class just by web browsing and doing office school work? Or you are being naughty and gaming in class lol?
-
In my college classes mine stays very quite and the fan hardly even comes on. But if I game then the whole class will know!
-
Sure when i game, its absolutely fine with a boring course, where you just have to be there physically
-
Hehe. Anyway you can't really put that as a disadvantage on the m14x when you said full fan ventilation when in class since it is whisper quiet when not gaming. Obviously if you do hardcore gaming inside a classroom with that hairdryer fan noise, you will definitely get noticed by everyone unless you are saying it still runs at full ventilation even when just browsing or doing school work. -
Well the m14x still has a colling issue, its not the best you know.

This is the advantage!
I still dislike the "noise" while gaming , normal use its kinda quiet , so far no heat issue.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -
Honestly the killer for me with the G46 is the keyboard. I HATE chiclet-style keyboards, which is what the G46 uses. I find the M14X's keyboard way more comfortable and responsive than most other laptop keyboards out there.

There's no "cooling issue" with the m14x.
If you stress the GPU and/or CPU any laptop will blast off the fans to make sure it expels as much heat as possible. If that happens even while not playing then you most likely need to
a) Repaste
b) Dust off
c) If in warranty send me a PM to see what's going on with it. -
I have owned a lot of computers and laptops, including Asus. I would NEVER buy another Asus, absolutely horrible service, and about 5 weeks of downtime in my first year of ownership. It was an 18" w90vp that I paid a lot of money for and I sold it since it was so unreliable. I've owned 4 Dell laptops and have always had good reliability as well as great service if I ever had a problem. I think I'll stick with my m14x r2 even though specs wise it may be a little behind the g46.

- 660m would be nice to see
- 660m power gain would be negated or be worse with a 1080p screen. GTX 675m can barely handle 1080p.
- This would be nice to see
- Clunkerbloat is such overrated crap. It's about as useful as having a firewire port. I hope Dell NEVER adds this.

- The chics love the lighting effects!
- Most people swap out their ODD's for HDD's. Not having an optical disk drive means you lose out on that upgradability.

Great to hear that you have had that type of service with your machine. That's actually one of the best parts of owning an Alienware.
Looks like the M14x finally met its match and conqueror with the up and coming G46
